- In this video Im hefting and feeding bees late in the Autumn. Normally I don't need to feed honey bees this late but this year I'm finding that I have had to use a lot more feed than usual.

Same in Ireland. My bees (Irish black bees) have been ploughing through the Invertbee like there's no tomorrow: they're still very active, too.
Weather needs to cool down a bit I think. Force them to cluster down.
Hi Gruff, yep a couple of my colonies are light and still feeding them and that’s with a fantastic ivy flow we’re I am in Liverpool the ivy was everywhere and the bees were bringing it in by the bucket load, I have mostly black bees and there doing great just the mongrel hives that need feed so I’m giving them fondant. I only hope we don’t get a winter like last year it was rain rain and more rain. Thanks for sharing your vlog with us Gruff mate.
Me too. Would rather a heavy frost over rain. Thanks for commenting 😊👍🏻
Here in Ireland, with the Irish black bee, we feed very little, a neighbour if ours with 50 hives hasn't fed his black bees in a couple of years I believe.
Shows the advantage of them in the British Isles
That’s a big saving not needing to feed! Are your bees like that every year even in the bad ones?
@@gwenyngruffydd it would be mostly the weak ones we feed. The black bee is very popular over here. There's very little buckfast
My hive has hammered through 12kg of fondant , sure they think "here comes this dull welshman with the grub again ,no need to go out today" 😂
😂😂 could be!!! Cows do that!!
Hi Gruff same down here in Cardiff mate. They have been hammering the 2-1 for weeks. Checked them today and I think they have finally enough stores except my nuc's as they are still on it.
Loads of people saying the same this year!
Again very helpful mine are light also so will need to feed more
Hearing the same from a lot in the community! Looks like it’s not just my bees but down to the mild weather too.
Top notch!
Diolch Adam 😊
They may still be too active and burning it up fast. I have to feed the hives that I got from the mountains because they fly in the colder weather while the others are clustering. I'm like you and would rather feed and get them through the winter than loose them to have to start over in the spring. Thanks for the video.
No problem, thanks for the comment 😊
Gruff a strange year we have needed to top up the colonies !!
Very strange year 2020 is turning out to be! With everything!!!
Diolch! Very helpful :-)
Dim problem 😊 thanks for the comment
Hello again Gwenyn!!! I don't have experience on how a hive should feel when weighing it. But my hive, which is an 8 frame;double deep hive, has over 12 frames with over 6" of capped honey on both sides of each frame. Does this sound like it is enough to hold them through winter? Should I add a candy board come November? Thanks my friend. Always love watching your vidoes.
Hi,
That sounds good. As it’s a double brood I would still feed it syrup.
Put candy on at the end of December
@@gwenyngruffydd Thank you Gwenyn. Very helpful, and reassuring. I'll pay it forward.
Hi what time of year is this thanks
This was filmed in October
We run all 150 colonies so we do NOT have to feed anything...why dont more beekeepers do it that way? Artificial diets are detrimental to their immune system. Timing is everything...we are now 1 month longer than 5 years ago...folks used to feed in August and September but now it should be in late October and Beginning of November...
Where are you based? No doubt honey winter feed would be best but didn’t look like the ivy gave that much this year in Wales.
