I don't know why everyone seems so surprised how good a job he does here. The guy is incredibly talented and has obviously taken good care of his voice. He has always been a really strong singer. Good to see him getting some much-deserved acclaim instead of being made a joke of!

@@davoharito6089 Johnny Marr is one of my favorite guitarists, so don't get me wrong, but he was never able to do live what they did in the studios. The albums have a lot of overdubs. On tour they often had a second guitarist, especially in the latter days of the band.
Rick is a rad dude. He never wanted to be a star. He was the intern sound engineer and the Stock Atkin and Waterman guys noticed he had the right look. They didn't even expect him to be able to sing and couldn't really care less , they just wanted someone they could market. Turned out he was a great singer

Pete Waterman was actually checking out a band that Rick was part of as a drummer. On the night Pete showed it the lead vocalist was ill , so Rick stepped in & the rest was history.
Never knew this was a thing. I was in London to see P!nk and got a text saying watch the Glasto set. So watched it on iPlayer in the hotel. I was amazed at how good it was. Blossoms are amazing and Ricks vocal is spot on. Not only that they and the crowd were loving it. So had to watch this. Great job by all concerned
Out of all the many This Charming Man covers I’ve heard, this one is right at the top (along with Braid’s). This guy absolutely gets what it’s like to be a British working class gay kid

That's probably why it works. Anybody else would be trying so hard to mimic Morrissey and fail miserably. But putting his joyful take on the song instead of trying to outdo Morrissey's misery is what basically made him succeed where most have failed.

@walkerbetweenworld from what I've gathered talking to people of that generation he used to be perceived as just cool and anti-establishment if a bit of prick, but now there's a real sense of betrayal from lots of them since the latter side started being more and more obvious
Smashed it!.......Johnny who?.....you have just got to give thease guys total respect....Fantastic versions of two classic songs.....never mind the vocals the band were faultless and any one who has ever played an instrument knows thease are not easy songs to cover......Frankly mr Astley......I loved it!

Exactly! It almost feels like a reclaiming of the songs for a lot of fans from association with Morrissey (that probably doesn't really make any sense given that they're his songs, but it's kind of how I feel)

@@adamgorsky8422 Yeah, so many years of trying to give him the benefit of the doubt despite the stupid things he's said and done, and trying to think 'maybe that's not quite how he meant it to sound' or 'maybe he's just channeling the views of others or being ironic', but the last few years have made it all too starkly clear just how much of a prick the guy is, and to some extent always was. It has made it very difficult to enjoy music which for so long meant so much to me (especially during tough younger years), and I never guessed Rick Astley was going to be my salvation!
