- Spring is here and early planting is near ! So its time to build those new raised beds ! In this video I show you how we did just that . Join me as my little helper and I construct the first of two beds throughout a fluctuation of classic New England spring weather !
Your daughter will never forget this experience. Great work. Thanks.
Thank you so much!
Glad I am not the only person who does things the "easy" way.Hard work builds character. Those are some big logs, I will not complain about the small ones I have to manhandle from now on.
Hahahahaha! Right ! All part of the adventure.
😂😂
a) get some big logs to act as borders
b) dig holes around the edges to make the frame and put the logs in
c) fill the center with smaller logs, branches, twigs, and leaf debris, in that order
d) put the dirt back on top
e) water the hell out of it
f) plant some stuff in it
that pretty much sums it up!

Cool bro. Awesome deal.
Thank you
I like it❤
Thank you!
Good to see that you hired a good quality inspector to verify your craftsmanship
One of the best !!!!!
Sometimes I feel like a nut job when I am putting stupid amount of work into the land with what seems like small amount to show. I enjoy it none the less. Its hard work being a steward of the land, but when its a calling there is no choice. I feel ya brother keep up the strong work. I have been doing a hybrid of back to eden and just recently joined the two together.
It's all well worth the effort ! To be enjoyed for years to come ! You are correct....when it is calling there is no choice! I like that !
Nice
Thank you. Getting ready to start working them another season!
That fourth log rolled into place beautifully. Well done
This was a fun project! There has been quite the transformation since this video....I'll show you guys come spring. Thank you for watching
You have an incredible helper. I would have watched just to see her
She certainly is! She is a worker!
Awesome! A self sustaining garden is smart and the fact you harvested or sourced everything cool. 100% free indeed.
Yes sir ! This was a fun project ! Those beds produced a fairly good amount of veggies this year ! I was quite surprised ! Next year they should really start settling into it !
That Foreman you got is a hard worker, lol
She sure is!
*Watching this makes me feels smart.*
you're welcome
Hugelkultur is an awesome way to go!!! Your little helper is a riot!! Been binge watching your videos today. Great stuff, man!!! Cheers!!
Yeah man ! We have a few of them going on now ! Been working on them for a while now (years) They should be ready to plant next season ! Things are coming along finally ! I just saw that you shared one of my videos !! I'm blown away man ! THANK YOU !! That is very kind of you ! I'm going to be sure to go through your content , at a quick glance it looks like we may be pretty like minded !
Not a problem!! I like what you have going on!!! I will definitely be in touch via your email soon. I think I have a series/collab in mind that I'd surely like to include you in....hint: it may involve craft beer 🍻...cheers!
@@3FeathersFarmstead Right on man ! Keep me posted , I'm all ears ! - Justin
My entire garden is made of logs just like this. Some i notched at the ends and some I just rolled into a rectangle. Have yours held up? Mine have only been in place about a year. Love that you posted this! Hope they’re still in good shape. I didn’t dig mine in. Just rolled them into place and filled!
Ours have held up quite well. Still going strong. I am sure you will get quite a few years of production out of yours.
Well done. You look like a person that likes to work. I hope that project is growing a lot of food for you now. We're inspired to try one but with smaller logs.
Thank you very much. These beds have been quite productive for us. In fact, they have worked so well that we built nine more! Give it a try!
Awesome project! I've been working on something similar with a big stack of rotten logs. I made a frame like you did and threw in bark, branches, leaves, mulch and compost. I can't wait to plant it up with some fall crop like kale, collards, and what not.
These beds have been extremely productive! I liked them so much I made 9 more🤣 I am sure you will have great success with yours.
This is an awesome idea! I live in Upstate New York and there are always huge trees getting cut down and laying practically everywhere! Looks awesome and thanks for the idea 👍 Your daughter is precious 💕
I'm glad you like the idea. It's a great way to use up those logs. She is my little helper!! Thank you for the kind words. -Justin
bro... if we were neighbors I would definitely help..... and yes Im 3 years late.....lol. great job man
It's the thought that counts. Better late then never. Thank you for watching and commenting
Man you are living rhe life i want! I have to wait until spring but we are looking at properties now to purchase. Im so close I can taste it. Thanks for the videos. BTW I love how your daughter is helping you with everything!
Buying land is a very exciting time in ones life! You must be stoked! I have a good helper!! Thank you -Justin
Great great video and explanation 🙌
Thank you! These have proven to be very productive beds! It is working
I did not know about the wood being a water sponge. Good idea.
And free!!!
Good work Bro, keep it up I hope to see more from you! 😁👍
Thank you very much! More on the way!
Great video!!
Thank you! These have proven to be very productive beds over the last few years!
good thing you had help...
Yes it is!
Great video! Nice job editing too.
Thank you. These beds have proven to be quite effective !
I definitely like this design! I would also point the fact that logs inside provide several important benefits for the plants /especially in a cold climate place/.
First logs provide an environment for soil creatures to live in the structure the wood provides protected from frost and cold. This benefits soil organism activity in the soil even in winter time.
Second very important is the logs are preventing soil compaction as it would happen if we put soil only all the way down 40 cm as I suppose your bed is.
Third very important: as the wood material decomposes it creates heat that benefits the root system of the plants especially in winter time. Generally deep Hugelculture raised beds generate and preserve more heat and solar energy for the plants grown inside.
Also when you put so much wood on the bottom of the raised bed you effectively deny entry of moles and voles that may feed on your plants root system!
Greetings from Bulgaria, keep up the good job!
A will definitely check your other videos!
There are so many advantages to this system ! We had some seriously good results this season from these beds. Since this video we have made 10 more of them !
Hey brother, great job! However, I'd like to point out in all that digging, your soil is already excellent. No need for the digging and wood chunks, unless you really want to of course. Just saying, you have prime soil as is and I would start planting in that beautiful humus right away. It's peas day, today. God bless you all.
I have to raise the beds in these locations because a lot of water comes down through the area when it rains
👍
Thank you! These have been very productive beds
You need a tractor. Starting my own hugel mounds fun stuff ...got a few so far
I just made a new very large hugel mound.....with a tractor ! LOL
👍👍
Thank you
Hard workers
Thank you
awsome. unlike our hugel beds. will surely try these some day soon. cheers to your little, enthusiastic help
how are the beds doing currently?
Best helper ever! These beds are currently under 10" of snow! However, they were extremely productive this season! We built 9 more of them this year! Things are coming along. Thanks for stopping by. Much appreciated
I saw one UA-camr who had problems with carpenter ants getting into the beds and then farming aphids. It’s the only negative I’ve seen on hugelkultur and had me thinking that logs as walls would be more risky for pests. Seems like you’re not having problems but wondering if you’ve dug one up to check? Awesome video! Cheers!
We haven't had any problems with them yet. And it has been a few years since I built these. These beds have been producing very well. I have since added 9 more beds of similar fashion and made a few more rather large hugelkulture mounds. The system takes a while to get going, but once it does it works well.
I haven't dug any beds up yet, but I have dug down into them to see what is going on. No infestations yet!
@@ItsGoodintheWoods Thank you!
Your video showed me that digging a Hügelkultur bed and dragging trees is a huge amount of work. What about those too old to do that? What about just building on the surface with the wood you can find? Wouldn't that work? Thank you. I envy you your strength.
It is a lot of work, but it's worth it! I'm sure you could build a mound right on the surface. No harm in trying
Yes, you can. I am old also, and have watched videos that show four variations of Hugulkultur beds. Barbara Pleasant also builds a comforter compost right on top of the grass. Lots of ways to do it. Happy gardening.
How did you pervent termites ?
Chickens. At the beginning and end of each season I let the chickens in to do their thing. Haven't had an issue yet.
Can it be with any kind of trees?
Absolutely. There are pros and cons to all of them. Use what you have access to!
how did it work out
These beds have been extremely productive! Getting ready for yet another season of use!
What type of chain saw do you have?
I have a Stihl MS 391 and an old stihl 025
2 years later... How did it go?
Things have been going very well. We have put in 9 more beds since!
U sure R doin it the hard way bloke
That is ok. It's exactly what I wanted. I don't see how I could have done it much easier......I am open to suggestions
@@ItsGoodintheWoods Hire a digger from the hire shop.
with a thumb on the bucket to pick up the logs
@@Bernie5172 I didn't want to do that. Then they wouldn't be free. It's much more rewarding this way for me.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods yes, ok. same way I did things in my younger days.
kind of a shame to cut down a healthy tree to make a hugelkultur bed. nice work none the less!
Thank you That was a big huge white pine that was too close to the house.
Not 100% free unless you had a way to make fuel for that chainsaw.
I bet you're fun at parties
Nice
Thank you! These have proven to be quite productive beds over the years
