  • With Spring finally, here it's time to start Building Raised Garden Beds on the homestead. Living Off Grid with only a minimal budget for building the organic garden we chose the wattle weave method for our DIY Raised Garden Beds. To give you some backstory to our homesteading journey, we moved from the city to the wilderness of Tennessee with ZERO experience to develop our raw land into our forever Homestead. On our road to becoming Self Sufficient, we learned from day 1 how our lives were about to change for the better but not without the hardships that come with building a homestead from scratch. Growing our own food is something we always dreamed about and with the ever increasing food prices and inflation now seems a better time than ever. Moving our lives toward a minimalist lifestyle has taught both Jes and me how to appreciate everything we work for and the journey of learning will lead us all the way to fully self sustainable
Although our Bushcraft skills are at a minimum we keep pushing forward and with every failure, we learn a better way how to homestead. Living off the land is not something we ever thought was possible in today's society but with determination to escape the rat race, we inch our way to a happier, healthier existence not only in harmony with our own bodies but in oneness with nature all around us.
Follow our off grid vlog Little House Off The Griddy and lend us your experience or learn from what we do right or wrong. We hope you enjoy our raised garden bed build as well as our off grid journey. We sure had a blast and hope you Stay tuned for more from Sean & Jes

Ideas to file for future reference: add animals to your homestead for soil/compost enrichment and a protein source (chickens are easy, and quickly turn woodland litter into glorious garden soil), coppice or pollard a few trees (some species are better than others for this) and you'll cultivate a lifetime supply of strait flexible sticks for wattle structures, Hügelkultur is your good friend when filling new beds, a two-wheeled barrow is a lifechanging investment, a small tractor with a scoop/bucket is valued beyond rubies (goals!), small sticks are easier to break over a rock or between two closely spaced trees than sawing to size for burning, always keep a stack of firewood stored jic of surprise cold weather (good for cooking with too). Work smarter not harder, nature is your ally...permaculture principles are worth studying on nights inside and rainy days. Thanks for sharing your hard work for all to see! I'm eager to check out how this homestead has matured two years later.

You can also put sticks and small logs in the bottom of each bed as to conserve on the amount of soils needed.
    Great job. BLESSINGS

Hey Judy thanks for the tip 😀. The soil we used was full of rotted wood and when we put leaves in the bottom we kept the small sticks and everything with it. You don't want to use green sticks though correct?

Just wanted to say hi and tell you what an inspiration you two have been for me. Ive wanted to go off grid for quite a few years now but never had the courage to take that leap. Well my wife and I are now making a plan to do it in a few years. I love that you share openly that you guys are not experienced off gridders but your still doing it, that inspires me and makes my dream seem possible! I also love all the great ideas I'm getting from your videos, I'm almost caught up on watching them all so I hope y'all are still out there making more cuz im hooked on them! 😊

Thank you soul much for the kind and beautiful words. It means alot to us when we hear about how we inspire others. How exciting that you are making a plan to become self-sufficient. I can tell you.. its been hard work and I (Jes) cry alot, but they are tears of growth, never those broken-soul kind of cries. But the good times are very good..sometimes too good. Like growing a strawberry from a seed and getting to give it to back to your body. Thats a miracle..one I am now witness to, and I wouldnt have it any other way. If there is anything we can do to help along with your transition, please let us know, and definitely keep us updated. Congratulations on your leap! Namastè

I know this might sound gross but urine diluted with water is best and fasted fertilizers for plants to use...and its freeeee!

Really cool. But no disrespect at all consider long-term you replied you were in your 40s I built mine out of cinder blocks they will last forever. really consider long-term depending on your finances. Old age will sneak up on you fast. Again long term. My only advice

These are just our prototype I guess you would say.. When these fall apart we hope to be in a situation to be able to build them out of stone or a more durable material. Cost of everything is so high right now. Thank you for the advice and it will be taken :)

What species of tree did the branches come from ? Where are you guys located? This is a good project. I'll have to look at more videos to glean more understanding.

Hey Hawg Dawg we used poplar and oak mostly. We are located in Tennessee and thank you so much for the compliment ☺. Welcome to the channel

I just “stumbled” (only if you believe in coincidence) on your channel and it seems we kindred souls. I’ve planned a similar garden design for my OGHS…when I get there, and yours is/will be outstanding!💜
Have you looked into the Hügelkultur method of using decaying wood (logs and limbs) for raised beds? Check it out if not. It’ll save you dirt work!😊 Keep up the good work and may favor and prosperity always be upon you. 🙏

Hi Sherry welcome to the channel 😀. We honestly thought we took on something out of our league with the garden design but it seems to be coming together. Thank you so much for watching and can't wait for you to see the finished garden

Yes we have looked into Hügelkulture and are for sure gonna try it. Just doing more research first. If you have any tips we are all ears 👂

The way I do/did is lay decaying rotting stump pieces and limbs, then leaf matter, then some straw I had and then dirt/compost material and that’s it! 😊

Most of what you did is wrong and impractical, but I see a potential for learning from your mistakes.
