Hanage Belmondo had beaten this run before him, so shoutouts to him as well! I plan to improve this as soon as I finish ActRaiser 2. So excited to have competition!
This run was done on a standard SNES console with a normal controller (no turbo). This is the Japanese version, but it plays identically to the US version. The only difference is the cutscene at the end of loop 1. This run was also done live if you want the original commentary/reactions with it ( / 2918736 .
This is my first completed speed run. This was my 3345th attempt at such a run. I am going to try to improve this by over a minute with the torch, but that will take a lot longer to accomplish because of how much luck is required with that weapon.
I could go on with comments for literally days, but I'll summarize a few points:
This is played on Normal difficulty. There are very few differences between normal and professional (some enemies move faster, some environmental hazards are faster, etc). All of these strategies work on professional mode, including boss quick kills.
I used the dagger in this run. The torch is faster overall, but requires incredibly good luck on every stage to survive. I chose to do a run with the dagger first so I had a solid baseline to compare against.
My luck in this run is possibly the worst I have ever had or seen. There are a lot of things in this run that have only ever happened to me 2-3 times (despawning every bat in the third tower of stage 3, two consecutive surprise weapon drops, very rare enemy patterns, etc). Still, I handled this obstacles pretty cleanly which is why the time is still good.
I lost my shield AND got hit in this run. In fact, I got hit twice.

Holy hell what an amazing run, congratulations! After watching the past few days I think I'm grateful I was at work when this took place, the whole run would've given me a heart attack watching it live. Despite stage 5 boss killing the shield post-death and having to rebuild gold armor, this run is insane. I'm looking forward to this run being discussed in detail in the next TSSB, it would easily earn SGNG an amazing game of the week spot.

Funny how the speedrunner does the entire game superbly, with very little time wasted and nearly achieving what can be called the 'perfect speedrun', yet the AI lets him down in an anticlimactic fashion at 38:40, the stupidity of which I doubt even DSPGaming would achieve!

34:51 Is the goddess bracelet more powerful close range? I'm practising this game at the moment, and I haven't been able to get past this boss yet....
It certainly does! If you are really far away, it will only do 3 damage, whereas it will do up to 18 damage if you are very close! Those two bosses are pretty hard to fight the goddess bracelet without practice. Just keep at it and you'll do it!

I played this game on the SNES as a kid. One time I finally beat it, I didnt speak any English because I was too young and had my parents translate what the princess said. I litterally felt like dying right there and then!!
I like how the ghost never appear for you and when I play they appear in front of me exactly where I need to jump to all the time😒

An axe run would be really neat! Basic steel armor axe feels really good, and is actually a half-decent weapon. I don't speedrun SGnG anymore, but that sounds like a fun idea. ^_^
Near the beginning (and especially noticeable on Stage 3, with the statues), you seem to be throwing daggers ridiculously fast, so that they almost overlap each other. How do you do that? They fire pretty fast to start with but I've never been able to get them that close together for quick kills.
Push buttons faster! Haha. I remapped the controls so that B and Y are attack and A is jump. I can then conveniently use both B and Y to attack with. I can fire daggers much more rapidly by using both buttons instead of just one.

How do you consistently get the knife at the beginning? Also do you have a consistent strategy for getting the ship skip in 2-A?
The RNG starts fresh on a reset, so you just need to experiment and find an approach to the first chest that gives you the dagger. It changes every frame, but if you're moving consistently and open the chest at the same time, you will get the same weapon.
I don't really have a consistent strategy for the ladder skip in 2a. It depends on where you jump and the bobbing of the ship. So it's kind of similar to what I said above: just work on getting really consistent approaches to the ladder and find a timing that works for you.

"Nice Catch" is for holding up on the dpad while collecting the key. Even if you don't catch it, the game gives you that text. ^_^
