OMG, Singlets. Lots of props to you. You didn't do the "my kid is too skilled to get hurt. Or too tough to get hurt.". IMHO you balanced on the sharp edge of following your training and following your heart admirably. Having teetered on that tightrope myself with my daughter, I understand how very hard that is.

Yeah, he did well. Any potential head or spinal injury should be evaluated by a doctor, and the lifeguards knew that. As a parent, it's quite scary to see your child seriously ill or injured. A few months ago, my daughter had to spend a 3 days in a children's hospital being treated with IV medication and fluids while undergoing a whole battery of tests. We are fortunate that her illness is manageable and non-life threatening, but it presented with the exact same symptoms of another condition that is life-threatening. Until all the tests came back clean, and she was feeling better, it was horrifying. I feel for the dad here!

These lifeguards see similar injuries on a regular, and they know what long-term consequences they pose, and the fact that it was his own child that was hurt brought this situation perilously close to home. It changes his game completely. Glad the other lifeguards were there for his support.

My dad was a nurse, and whenever one of us kids would have something wrong he’d be like “what am I supposed to do about it?”, but as soon as a friend of his friends called with an issue with one of their kids he’d be Super Dad! I would laugh at him for it all the time. Of course whenever it was something super serious like this with one of us kids he went into straight “nurse mode”. I think it was his way of dealing with 7 kids. I miss him.

Such an amazing parent!! When I was 14 I fractured a vertebrae (vertebral compression fracture) in an accident doing backflips off a sand dune while we were on vacation. The pain was so excruciating that I spent the following nights trying to cry myself to sleep. My parents could obviously see the pain I was in but not knowing the severity of the injury they just kept giving me pain killers (which did nothing to suppress the pain) and told me to wait and see if it got better and if it was still "sore" after we got back from our holiday then they'd take me in to have it checked out. I had to endure it for another 4 days and was hardly able to eat, drink, or sleep due to the pain before I was finally taken me into an ER where they discovered the fracture in my upper back. To this day, nearly 6 years later, my posture has been affected which causes minor (but very annoying) chronic pain in my back that I will have to live with for the rest of my life. I don't have anything against my parents at all because, like myself, they were completely ignorant to the long term risks of such an injury. So to all the parents out there, please just listen to your kids and please take spinal injuries very seriously! I know kids can often cry wolf about certain things but its much better to be safe than sorry when it comes to head and spinal injuries.

@@mustlovedogs5569 nah man, its not like that. I had a very "privileged" upbringing with kind, caring, loving parents...its more just that they at the time were a bit ignorant as to spinal injuries and thought that if I was able to walk (altho in horrible pain) then it can't be too serious cos if it was then I'd surely be paralysed already...and a lot of friends and family (myself included) thought the same too!

Was the hardest thing when my son fell on brick hearth & couldn't move his legs! I could tell there was a spinal injury when I came around the corner & he was in so much pain he could only wimper! He was a scrappy 9 yr old that never complained of pain! I blocked his body with pillows & had to firmly instruct him tl focus on his breathing, & take care not to move! And called for help! Had to leave the house to go about a block away to flag medics in as new development & no street signs yet. They were great, by GOD'S grace the kid carefully walked out of the hospital that night! Though on strict bed rest following! It also prepared him to later parent his children & stay calm in emergency when his baby boy was choking on a coin! He called me later loosing it! That's the time to let it, keep your cool till off duty! Then let it out! 👍 Treat yourself for shock, etc! But staying calm can make a huge difference! Especially for the injured one! If you freak out, they will too!

Turns out I have a fractured vertebrae and it’s the worst feeling. It’s not fun always do every test possible to make sure you know the issue.

Kids seem stupid but they are just inexperienced. So you need to explain things to them even if you think it might be complex. I wish they just said to him, “You got hit in the head but your back hurts. That could mean your spine is injured and your spine controls your entire body. That’s why this is so serious.” Then he’d realise that this isn’t an overreaction.

He was with his older brother who as soon as he saw what happened got him out of the water and came to get his dad, who was one of the Lifeguards on patrol. So he wasn't alone and the kids have been well taught in what to do.

I remember as a kid getting in trouble when I got hurt. I quit telling when I got injured. Hit my head on the bottom of a pool. 🤭 Crashed on a 3-wheeler. 🤭 knocked myself out doing gymnastics on a balance beam. 🤭. Now I have the permanent injuries to deal with at 50. One doctor told me that my X-rays showed my skull had been shoved down to where there was very little clearance between the top vertebrae and the skull. No joke, I always thought I had a short neck. We were a big time “walk it off” family. I joke that’s our last name, Walkitoff.
