Isn't this a moot point? You're pretty much locked into the size of the portafilter dependent on the machine. You really have no option to move from one size to another. Video should have been "consider portafilter size when selecting your espresso machine."
What makes 58mm more flexible? What about the size means a better quality shot? I didn't hear one word of evidence to back up these claims. Lance Heddrick, a championship- winning barista, provided EVIDENCE to the contrary. Narrower and deeper puck allows for longer contact with water under lower pressure, with less channelling, to achieve higher extraction overall, white keeping bitter flavours down. In short, an educational video must be evidence-based. No evidence = no educational value.
Def prefer a 54 over a 58. More consistent and reliable with the deeper puck. I find no advantage to 58 except availability of somewhat useless toys that you can spend endless money one to get 1% better coffee that ends up being used in a milk drink that obliterates any difference that ever existed.
I have a 54 and would like a SMALLER PF. Cuz I pull single shots, and the smaller the diameter of the PF, is easier. Using a single shot basket on the larger PF can be difficult.
@medroastt9888 I use the single shot basket in my 54 and fresh beans. The results are delicious, even though I break all the rules and pull 3:1in about 30s.

I think Lance's vid was good at showing how smaller sizes are better due to the deeper puck allowing better consistency.

Wow! How are you guys (Lance too) releasing video about the same topic on the same day?
I have a pre-millennium 49mm la Pavoni, 49mm adapted Picopresso, and I've been saving up for a de1 with a sworks adaptor. I'm fully a 49mm man.

I prefer smaller portafilter because I like 14-15 gram in a shot so that I can have 2 cups per day w/o feeling too much caffeinated

3:38, Sheldon would like a word.
