    When laying out a larger building, use the double 3-4-5 method and use 6-8-10 and you will get a more accurate measurement. Like using a 6" level versus an 8' level

    Do you get tired of nosey people wanting to know why you did this or you could have done that ?
    People it is their property not yours. They didn't ask your opinions so back off and just watch the videos. You aren't paying their bills.
    I enjoy your time here. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your life. You are doing a great job!

    I'm an "old timer" these days but when I was knee high to a grasshopper an old timer told me "You can NEVER have too much firewood!"
    Those words were true then, they are true now, and they will be true in the future.

    You need some "sled dogs" , lol 😂. Even though you gotta feed them a lot, they pay it back in spades with the work they do! Your homestead is gorgeous. I love the tilt feature on your roust about vehicle!

      I just need to train the ones I’ve got to pull. The tilt feature IS nice on the SxS. The bed also folds up and there is additional seating for guests.

      Yes hip dysplasia is an issue with the breed as is Degenerative Myelopathy. Luckily ours come from lines with good hips and we genetically health test for DM.
      So glad to have you join us on our journey.

    Lol the dogs are the star of the show.
    We have already started on firewood for next winter, and the stove has not even been installed yet lol. That's one thing I don't want to play around with haha.

    A compact tractor would be perfect for a wide variety of tasks around your property! I’m partial to Kubota, but there are many good brands out there. I’d pick one not only close by, but with a good service and parts availability. These small diesel’s are virtually bulletproof! Looking forward to your videos.

    Do you have any future plans for goats or sheep? I'm still binge watching so you may have talked about this already.

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  4 місяці тому

      Possibly chickens, rabbits and a pig each season but not until we finish the house. Sheep are too much maintenance and we don’t use enough milk to make goats worthwhile.

    You cutting firewood takes me back to the days when I was younger and our family would go out every Sunday after church and get firewood. Dad built tall side rails to haul more in his truck. Sometimes he would pull a pickup box trailer with tall side rails so we could haul more sometimes he would pull the log splitter so we could fit more. Then we'd come home and have to split or stack it all. Took up all of my Sunday. I hated every bit of it. Probably because I missed out on the football games. lol. Now I'm 50 and for whatever reason I'm thinking I need a wood burning fireplace in my shop. Maybe because part of me misses it or maybe it's to keep my butt in shape. lol
    24:00 my dad was a jack of all trades. could do a little bit of everything but spent most of his time mechanicing. I too wish I would have paid more attention now. You could always ask a builder in your area or the County Engineer if you have one about their experience on building.

    I see lots of building your future. Will the cabins be for rentals? Nice neighbor to offer you the wood and you did him a favor by cutting down the tree. Any more work on the loft?

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  6 місяців тому

      -The cabins will be summer rentals.
      -Yes, that deal worked out for both of us.
      -Craig did get the other brace on the front right side but I think it’s as done as it’s going to get until winter. Now that it’s getting warmer outside we’ll start focusing on outside projects, plumbing for the shower and hopefully…kitchen cabinets. This having stuff stashed and stuck everywhere is driving me crazy 😂

  • @michaelcravens3767
    @michaelcravens3767 6 місяців тому +1

    You mite want to clear away some of the trees from the house and shop area as a fire break. Doing it now will give the wood some time to dry out so that you will have better firewood come winter.

    Are you planning to make the gravel pad bigger than the shop building foot print to give you areas on the sides and back to park/store equipment and maybe later build lean-tos?

  • @DawnMillington-i9t
    @DawnMillington-i9t 6 місяців тому +2

    Wondering will sliding doors work with your snow load ? Kinda ways from the homestead. How about lean two off for storage. I’m ahead of things. Let’s get started can’t wait to see it started.😊

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  6 місяців тому

      Sliding doors should be fine, we’ll just have to keep the ground clear. We’re planning a lean to off the back for firewood. The current firewood shed will eventually be a kennel so the dogs have a place if we go away overnight.

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  6 місяців тому

      Close to the driveway, good drainage in that area, far enough from the house to not be noisy yet close enough it won’t be too far from the house in winter.

    Hi great video on planning your garage . Can you tell us why so far from the house would think nearer the house would be better in the winter months or do you just always keep the vehicles parked outside in all weathers.

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  6 місяців тому

      It’ll be more of a work shop than garage. We may do a car port at some point but for now the trucks live outside.

    I wonder if you cut the bottom of the post beveled? Frost heaves I think are caused by catching flat surfaces and pushing. I'm no expert, just an idea based on some things I've heard since moving here. I'm very interested in how this is going to work out.

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  6 місяців тому

      I’ve been watching some building shows. According to them, if you wrap the post in plastic, the plastic will slide up and down with the frost heaves, leaving the post in place 🤷

    If you have any concerns about people randomly stopping by your property, even though you say you have some precautions, you might also want to blur out your street address sign early in the video.

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  6 місяців тому

      Not concerned with viewers, most are quite far away. This is to detour unsavory locals. We don’t seem to have a problem in this area but nothing wrong with being proactive.

  • @jimmycpm
    @jimmycpm 6 місяців тому

    Why are you not finishing the inside and outside first?

    • @ouralaskahomestead
      @ouralaskahomestead  6 місяців тому

      Because this stuff is free. I can only buy material for the house every other paycheck so we do what we can when we can. We won’t start building the shop for a while but it doesn’t cost anything to lay it out, start mowing the area and get rid of stumps that are in the way. And we couldn’t hardly pass up free firewood when the neighbor offered the tree to cut. Trust me, no one wants to see the house done more than me!
