This is amazing. My father took me here as a little girl and I would have never in my wildest imagination thought this was what the top looked like. I always thought it maybe looked like an empty volcano... this gave me butterflies.

Great tree stumps don't have holes like volcanoes!
If this is what volcanic activity looked like you would see these formations Around Every volcano in the world.
Even look at any volcano around the world and tell me whether you can see the resemblance in any way, then look at every tree stump that come down with natural interference and I'll bet you the resemblance will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck!

Devils Tower is a foot heel Achilles that is worn off, when the flood came they sank into the ground and they broke off one leg after losing their balance, there are many of them in the USA. you see the fracture zone at the top ,this is from a Titan's, this cud be up to 3000 ells or over 11000 tousen foot tall.

@@0j6j0 This dude is an absolute eejit... its more than likely that this "stump" is an ancient magma chamber of a long gone volcano. We have a similar one, albeit without the same basalt columns (different process of cooling). Always wonder what the top of this thing looked like. When I was a kid in the 1950's and throughout most of my life, no one knew what what was on the top except for a few select people who flew over it and could see it for themselves. When quadcopter technology came into being it changed a lot of things by making off-limit locations like this, easily accessible.

As a rustic furniture builder I am very familiar with growth ring splitting and radial splitting of stumps. When a stump begins to rot it forms those square looking vertical features seen on devils tower. On smaller trees this is barely noticeable but on a monster like this they are quite visible. That' why the entire top looks like individual sections like a tiled floor. All of those vertical lines are what we in the business call "checking". This stump would have been around 1 1/2 acres at the top. It's huge because it's pre-flood. Some of you know what I'm talking about. This is none other than a petrified tree stump.

This is an example of how religion poisons everything. When we had no way of knowing what this was or how it formed, baseless surmise like the "pre-flood petrified tree" idea felt better to people than the dreaded, "I don't know." But now that we DO KNOW, the wilful ignorance of clinging to baseless surmise in the face of hard evidence makes obvious the moral rot and intellectual cowardice which is promoted by most religions. 🙏

Some claim this is the fossilised stump of a giant tree. This is utter rubbish. It is a solidified neck of an extinct volcano and is made of phonolite. The main cone of the original volcano eroded away over an estimated 40 million years to leave the neck. The higher parts are more exposed to erosion and therefore the diameter is larger at the base than the top, creating the tree stump shape.

Whatever this thing is, old volcano or petrified tree stump, something tells me that it won’t be that tall forever. It appears to have loose rocks that occasionally fall off. I can see near the top the rocks along the sides look like they will crumble to the ground eventually some day. It won’t look like this forever….nothing is forever. It is magnificent to look at.

At the time flying OVER NPS property was legal, NPS banned drone use on their parks property. Launched from outside the very small park that devils tower sits on,NPS has no authority over airspace. Today with all the new rules I'd never do it. Since then the FAA has taken control of that airspace and the drone hobby is now dead.
