  • Happily married for 35 years, Demetris and Tyrone Brisby raised a beautiful family and were enjoying life as grandparents. Demetris loves shopping and began collecting various items when she and Tyrone were first married. After many years, she amassed an extensive collection of unique items. “I try to find things that you won’t see at anyone else’s house,” she said. But in June 2020, she almost lost the ability to see the treasures in her own home.
“I went to bed one night, and I woke up and I thought my hands were numb, like I fell asleep on them, but it was these three fingers on the right,” Demetris said. By the next evening, her whole hand was numb and the tingling started on the other hand. In the morning, her arms, stomach, legs and feet were numb. She called her doctor who scheduled an MRI. After reviewing the results, he called Demetris and told her to come to the hospital immediately. Demetris and Tyrone already knew something was wrong because Demetris couldn’t walk by the time they arrived at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.
Demetris was diagnosed with neuromyelitis optica, a central nervous system disorder that primarily affects the eye nerves and the spinal cord. If Demetris hadn’t gone in for care when she did, she could have been left permanently blind.

I love Mrs. Dee and her husband ( that's what me and my mom call her). My mom meet her through her job. She is always positive and believes in God. She always texts us everyday with scripture and prayers. It is truly a miracle she made it alive because memorial hospital is a horrible hospital to go to.

My father has this condition. I wish I could find some exercises for this online on youtube. As the condition is rare, it is hard to find.

Hello my name is Michelle Welcome. I was at Brooks 4 years ago. I survived aneurysms and a stroke. Therapists helped me learn how to start from the beginning as a baby literally. I am still attending Brooks Outpatient Rehabilitation twice a week.I walk with a cane now. I pray some to walk with out it. God bless Brooks and the staff.

Neuromyelitis is no joke. I was diagnosed in 2014. My husband looked at me and said I'm not going to take care you. I'm divorcing you. I've been doing this on my own. Family thinks I'm faking it.

@@avimae4225 I’m sorry you’re going through that. My aunt is diagnosed with NMO and is currently re-learning how to walk. If I may ask how are your symptoms now? As a 15 year old I’m currently trying my best to research everything about this disease, but due to how rare it is there’s not much I can find about it sadly.
