I think ranked will increase the amount of burnout and rage in the community by a lot. Certain players are already losing their minds, and if ranked becomes a deciding factor for getting access to certain tournament then that will be extremely stressful.
@gryph0n1 There is no limit to how much ranked one can play and the one who plays and wins more will be ranked higher. So the limit to reaching the ranked top spot is playing 24 hours every day and winning every single game. Having that pressure to perform on a weekend with tournaments and having that pressure every single day with ranked is a big difference and I can see it turning into burnout.
um, it absolutely will not be the deciding factor. literally ever. MGPR rankings still exist and are still the go-to for seeing whos capable of being a top player. genuinely what the fuck are you on about, itd be a terrible idea to base participant entry purely off of slippi ranked for a plethora of reasons, nobodys gonna do that LOL
@@ChalerYT as far as I’m aware, Puff can still stall pretty aggressively for example. I think there’s a lot of work that needs to be done before we can trust the results
My soft read is that it'll probably happen much like it does in other competitive games with ranked mode. There will be a totally different metagame emerging from ranked, and it'll divide the netplayers from the LAN players. "You play like your playstyle was forged in the fires of ranked" will be both an insult and a compliment. My hard read is that the bigger the player pool gets, and the more popular melee becomes, and as the netplay playstyle becomes more prominent, top players will realize that playing against each other is better practice than joining ranked, which further obscures the average ranked player from actual top player exp with them only doing ranked for content, which will in turn perpetuate the cycle of dividing the LAN skillset from the netplay skillset. It happened in street fighter, it happened in DBFZ, it happened in MKX, it'll likely happen here.
Since playing offline with friends or at your local weeklies has such a long history in melee, I don't think that will die out. These are part of what make the game so special. I also don't think that tournaments will lose too many attenders. Ranked can only give a long time perspective on who the top players are, but doesn't necessarily show who the best player right now is. But I think there will be less online tournaments. In my opinion they were necessary during the covid-restrictions-days, but it is okay to slowly say goodbye to them.
there's no way a high profile event like summit will ever use ranked mode to invite players in. people would just try to cheese wins by lagswitching or using macros or something like that, and stuff like that is really hard to regulate if theyre just playing ranked rather than entering an actual online bracket with a TO that can do lag tests
it's funny to me you would reference league and not any of the many many fighting games with ranked modes, but the point stands anyway. also, the fgc does have regular offline events. ranked mode with good online has made it less the default method of play but it hasn't killed it at all. It helps to be close to a bigger city but it's something you can get started anywhere.
Ranked finally lets me play Mewtwo without people immediately leaving. Just wait until I find a way to beat any half decent Marth, I'll be unstoppable.
i dont have good enough internet to do online play well. this hinders my development but i like not being ranked and dont think ill get on there even if the opportunity arises as i develop.
There are actually 3 Leffens - The Swedish Typer is also Leff. Big L is an alt account Leffen made to climb the leaderboard while he was in NA, I guess for some reason it got moved to the EU leaderboard when he went back home (even though that's problematic because of how Elo works). The Swedish Typer is an alt for Leffen playing on a Boxx controller. I think a few other top players have alts for their midtiers.
Unfortunately I don’t think it’ll last. Online tournaments are gonna be fine, ranked is nothing close to real tournaments and it’s a huge exaggeration to say they will be affected at all. The elo system is pretty awful, and the “top 50” is just whoever wins more, which means you have to no life it (see ibdw) in order to place highly. More matches should not equal better player. The only way I see ranked being actually used is for seeding.
The one thing I wish we could do is update the graphics. Not change any animations, just make the graphics more clear and crisp. It's hard to sell a game that looks as bad as melee(relative to other new games, Melee looks great for a 2001 title).
@@shayboual1892 I know, but I mean in tournament. I wish we could do a graphics mod that was standard over all tournaments. I know we cant because nintendo would shut it down, but I still think that is all melee needs to find its footing as a mainstream game.

MELEE ONLINE NEEDS A 4 PLAYER MODE WITH ITEMS ON FOR FUN
Nice video. I think it’s unlikely TOs will weigh ranked highly unless the anti cheating stuff gets really really good.
Valid point I never even thought about cheaters!

Oh yeah I've seen leffen doing it sadest fizzi tweet ever poor guy
Them unedited 1 hour friendly sessions are fucking sick

i love your content, best melee content out there; thank you 🎉
Underrated channel, keep it up brother

Melee 🎉🎉🎉
Nice vid 👍
I hope online tournaments still do well. It's a pretty big difference between ranked randoms and bracket matches, online or not
I was hesitant to hop on board but I’m oh so glad I did! Great video and nice points hit home!
I hope Nintendo doesn't fuck this up
Love to see Leffen getting mad about getting punked by a jigglypuff online
super interesting points made here, great video. i think mental health might've been another good topic to cover.

not gonna lie i thought you were toph from your youtube picture. stayed for the sweet melee content 😊
good for you guys
I just passed up my local last night largely because of ranked.
pog content
It's the Supertf of the fighting game community

i hate online tourneys compared to actually going
On the leaderboards, why are there 2 Leffens? Why is Plup named Plub? And who is Herman??? 🤔

3:39 what ru talking about those videos are great
Ahh, assumptions being made about me and my worth when my rank is revealed, coming soon to one of my favorite games. Can't wait.
Can you wobble on tanked

Chaler
When did Leffen become 1st in top 50?!
you mispronounced michael 41 billion trillion
good vid
I wont lie I always just think I imagined hat nickname in some fever dream
lmfaoooo WHY DIDNT YOU SEED ME HIGHER I AM GOLD 3!!!
God, such an L that it’s best of 3.
Disagree. There's still CSGO LANs even with Faceit existing. The ranked metagame will be independent from the tournament metagame
I hope Ultimate gets to this eventually
gonna need to achieve better netcode first
@luigifan4232 sad thing is highly doubt Nintendo gives a shit enough to give their players Rollback let alone a ranked mode :/
Ultimate is most likely done. It would need to be done in a patch and I don't see those on the horizon anymore.
Who cares about online tourneys anyway

You can install mods that change how the game looks
