Cool, an American Prayer better than most people think. You know what’s cool about the Byrds? They check so many different genre boxes. Folk, pop, country. Even some psych. Did I mention I saw the Sweetheart tout with my friend Mark in Akron, OH? Lol. I’ve beaten that to death. Chris and Roger told some stories about Gram Parsons. Speaking if Gram I highly recommend his solo stuff and the first two Flying Burrito Brothers records. My favorite tune? It’s a Dylan cover, you ain’t going nowhere. Well, I see if I had waited to comment it’s clearly not a favorite if yours. I get that. It’s not fir everyone. I like old country as well. It’s why I dig it.

Hey Bo! Yeah, I've had that American Prayer for a while. It's darn good! It's not the RSD reissue. Yes, the Byrds were difficult to pin to one genre. They had their hands in many and were so influential. Yes, it's very awesome that you saw the Sweetheart of the Rodeo tour. Hey man, I would've gone to see Chris and Roger. That is way cool. I have a CD with two Gram solo albums on one and I've heard a few Flying Burrito Bros songs that I liked. I just couldn't get all in with Sweetheart for some reason. Have a great Sunday, my friend.

Wow Hannah, I am impressed and this is coming from a Byrds fan since Mr. Tambourine Man when I was 12. I liked your song selection. Since Turn Turn Turn is my favorite song it would easily made my top 15. Glad to see Notorious Byrd Bros was your number 2 album. It is my favorite. I am really impressed by your knowledge. How does someone as young as you get that interested in 55 year old music. It is really nice to see.

I was thrilled to finally find a mono reissue of Notorious Byrd Brothers over the weekend. It sounds fantastic. I think that album is now my #1 as well. And I have my uncle and parents to thank for getting me into 60s and classic rock music! :-)

A great selection. I also prefer the original line ups until Crosby was fired and Micheal Clarke left the band. So my five (six in total) favourite albums are the same ones as the albums that you presented but in a different order:
    6. The Byrds (the album from 1973)
    5. Turn! Turn! Turn!
    4. Mr. Tambourine Man
    3. The Notorious Byrd Brothers
    1. Fifth Dimension
    Younger Than Yesterday
I couldn't decide whether Fifth dimension is my favourite album or Younger than yesterday. One fundamental problem that I have with Younger than yesterday is that it sounds sometimes like a halfhearted effort by the band and recorded or mixed too fast. But that's just my opion.
Coming to my 15 favourite Byrds songs, I had to notice that it was impossible for me to choose 15 favourite songs, because the Byrds have recorded so many great songs. The following 37 (!) songs are probably my favourite songs by The Byrds after having seen through the albums. The subsequent order portrays how I like the songs at the moment:
    37. What’s happening
    36. Dolphin’s smile
    35. So you want to be a Rock ‘n‘ Roll Star
    34. Thoughts and words
    33. It happens each day
    32. Natural harmony
    31. Mind gardens
    30. Why (‘Younger than yesterday‘ version)
    29. Here without you
    28. Turn! Turn! Turn!
    27. I know my rider (I know you rider)
    26. The world turns all around her
    25. Goin’ back
    24. Wasn’t born to follow
    23. Draft morning
    22. Eight miles high
    21. My back pages
    20. I knew I’d want you
    19. Mr. Spaceman
    18. Mr. Tambourine Man
    17. I see you
    16. It won’t be wrong
    15. Old John Robertson
    14. I’ll feel a whole lot better
    13. It’s no use
    12. You won’t have to cry
    11. Lady Friend
    10. Don’t make waves
    9. Everybody’s been burned
    8. 5D (Fith Dimension)
    7. Triad
    6. The airport song
    5. Wild mountain thyme
    4. Renaissance Fair
    3. John Riley
    2. Tribal Gathering
    1. Have you seen her face
I hope it's not too much, but the Byrds are one of my Top Five favourite artists. 🙂

Interesting choices. I'm almost the complete opposite to you, my favourite Byrds albums are Sweetheart and the later albums. I'm a big fan of Clarence White's guitar playing, and some of those later records have some wonderful guitar work.
You seem to be a fan of Gene Clark, how familiar are you with his post Byrds material? Roadmaster is his album I listen to most, it has all of the original Byrds on it as well as members of the Flying Burrito Brothers. But it might be a little too country for you.

Great video Hanna and nice to see a female perspective on such a wonderful band. I was late to the Byrds but was immediately struck by Gene Clark's astonishing gift for songwriting. My love of his music overtook my exploration of The Byrds. I bought as many Clark albums as I could even lashing out on the extravagant No Other box set. So I couldn't rank Byrds albums if I tried but think I too would favor the first five. I too am yet to warm to Sweetheart of the Rodeo. It's an odd duck in the discography for sure. Anyway, thanks so much.
Oh yes, I love Shoegaze and saw Ride way back on the Going Blank Again tour. They were fantastic. I'll be interested to see where you rank the Nowhere album which is my favorite along with some Slowdive perhaps.

Hi John! Wow, I haven't gotten a comment on this Byrds video in a long time. Thanks for taking the time to check it out! Gene Clark is definitely my favorite Byrd, too. I have nearly all of his solo albums and he was such a talent. I still can't totally get on board with Sweetheart of the Rodeo!
Wow, you saw Ride on the Going Blank Again tour? Must have been absolutely mind-blowing! You are so lucky! I favor Going Blank Again over their other albums. I was really impressed with their new one last year, This is Not a Safe Place. What did tyou think of it? Nowhere is stunning, too. Sometimes I have a difficult time putting them totally in the shoegaze category because I find them very pop, but certain songs it's no mistake! Cheers!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Thanks for your thougtful reply. I haven't heard This is not a Safe Place yet, though I should as I read it had a heavy post punk influence. The Fall, one of my favorite groups was cited as an influence. I quite like Weather Diaries.
Sweetheart of the Rodeo is a tough but to crack. It's country in the purest sense of the word. However, it heavily influenced Keith Richards and others to incorporate these influences into subsequent songs which wasn't a bad thing. Such a stark contrast to the hippy and psychedelic trends at the time. John Wesley Harding by Dylan also played a part here. I'll be sure to check out more of your videos soon. I'd love to see a Gene Clark video from you. I'm kinda old and it takes more to make me sit up and be surprised music wise these days but Gene Clark took my breath away when I first encountered his genius and still gives me goose bumps. Thank you. Will check out your desert island video next.

Please, please consider a group called The Chameleons UK to be part of your series. I think they qualify as "jangle" but see what you think. Listen to two tracks, "Tears" and "Pleasure and Pain". Interesting list Hannah. Love your Geno mentions, what a songwriter. I love Sweetheart but get why others find it a jolt, but in my honest opinion Hickory Wind is a song for the ages and One Hundred Years from Now is not too far behind. Those albums up to and including Sweetheart are brilliant and I would argue the Byrds influence on later generations of musicians was greater than the Beatles.

Would only disagree with naming Chestnut Mare a favorite. Hearing that for the first I realized that McGuinn had hijacked everything that was "Byrds", to be replaced
by Roger and his Backup Band. Also, how John Riley was overlooked is really perplexing. Features Crosby's finest harmonizing moments. And thanks for informing people about Crosby writing Draft Morning. If true, it is one of his finest songwriting moments rising above a wide array of clunkers. Left before you named your top five albums as they had only five albums so any configuration was just alright with me.

THANK YOU for exposing Sweetheart of the Rodeo as a not very good album. I have had the first 8 albums for decades, and that's the only one I don't regularly listen to. I have tried.... but I just can't get over the twang. If critics want to say it's essential to understand what came after it, fine, but at face value it's rather mediocre.

Hi Hanna, Great to see what your Byrds faves are. That would take me some real serious thought for me to figure out what's what. The song "Why" first appeared as the flip side to "Eight Miles High". That version is the OG version. The album version is an alternate take. Gene Clark was so gifted. He was so lucky to be such a great song writer as well as an excellent singer. It's really a shame he wasn't appreciated more after he departed from the Byrds. I am glad you are a Clark fan. But, as it turned out your No.1 pick is a McGuinn song. Have a Merry Christmas, Ron

Enjoyed your listing Hanna. Since I am a guitar player, I love any Byrds album that featured the guitar genius of Clarence White. He can be heard on every Byrds album from "Younger Than Yesterday" through "Farther Along". Other than Roger McGuinn's 12 string, most of the really cool guitar parts were actually Clarence White. On many tracks throughout their discography, the session players known as "The Wrecking Crew" played on their studio recordings.
The Byrds were fantastic with their cover songs. Many of my favorites were songs like "This Wheels On Fire", "I Wasn't Born To Follow", "Goin' Back", "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and "Jesus Is Just Alright". I could go on and on about the Byrds because I love this group so much.
If you are interested in a great sounding collection of alternate takes, remixes and unreleased songs, check out the compilation called "Never Before". Released first on vinyl in 1987 on Re-Flyte Records, then in 1989 as an expanded CD on the CBS Special Products Murray Hill label.

Gotta pick you up on the session bit ! Only on Tambourine Man and the b side were the wrecking crew used. For every every other track they recorded in their career it was the band plus on occasion someone helping out specifically like Clarence prior to his joining the band in '68 . Suggesting otherwise is really misleading and i would suggest you need to research a lot more about the band before commenting. Johnny Rogan's epic two volumes 'Timeless Flyght ' would put you straight

Maybe you can get a soda stream and not actually put any flavoring in it? I have all these albums but I don't tend to play them a lot or pay too much attention - have no idea why, since they are great. Dylan does the better version of all his songs except three: Quinn The Eskimo, All Along The Watchtower, and Mr. Tambourine Man. I don't love Sweetheart either; I think it’s overrated. I also agree with your 1st album choice, as well.

I do agree with you about "Sweetheart". I had heard so much about it but apart from the first track i couldn't get into it. I think my favourite is The Notorious Byrd Brothers. Nicely experimental but tuneful too.
I am definitely a Gene Clark man and think it was a great shame how some of his solo work was ignored at the time. Who knows what could have happened personally and professionally if he had got the recognition he had deserved.
I remember reading in a biography about him that inadvertently the success of Tom Petty's cover of "Feel a Whole Lot Better" did Gene more harm than good. He didn't have much money at the time and had virtually cleaned up. The royalties from the Tom Petty sales came through and then he was back off the wagon partying and doing all the things he had done before. Very sad.
In Britain, where I am from, the Byrds are not so highly rated in general. It is mainly just Tambourine Man. Eight Miles High and perhaps, Chestnut Mare getting played, if at all - some friends are surprised at how many Byrds albums I have as they didn't think they had recorded much. As your piece today shows, there is a great wealth of material and great songs produced by the band, other than just the hits - which although great, don't tell the whole story .
    Excellent video!

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert
      @TheOmahaIntrovert  5 років тому

Andy, thank you so much for stopping by to watch my Byrds video! You have a solid #1 pick with the Notorious Byrd Brothers! It is criminal how ignored Gene Clark's solo material was at that time. I have 3 solo Gene Clark LPs so far and one on CD. Just love his vulnerability in his lyrics and emotion in his singing. Very sad that Petty cashed in and Gene had nothing left. It's really weird that I don't hear any Byrds on classic rock radio here. I feel like they are underrated/underappreciated in many countries, unfortunately. :( What a shame. Rock on, my friend!

Hey Hannah. Thanks for taking the time to do these lists. Really enjoyed it. I guess I never heard 5th Dimension all the way through. I always knew Mr. Spaceman and of course, Eight Miles High. I really liked the songs you listed from this. I’ll probably, at least download them today. You know we have very similar taste, so of course I love every song on your list. I also love Sweetheart of the Rodeo, mostly because I’m a huge Gram fan. The Byrds are one of the most diverse bands ever. They’ve mastered Pop and Psychedelic, they’ve influenced so many bands that play jangle pop and power pop, and pretty much invented Country Rock. Definitely an all-time band. I’m looking forward to the Shoegaze video. Peace Hannah.

I'm not really a big fan of the Byrds, only have three albums + a comp. I actually prefer Gene Clark solo. My fave is Untitled, really great album. I understand your point on Sweetheart, i really do like it,but just like you, i feel it is so much one dimensional country that i have to be in the mood for it. Shoegaze is not my thing either, only have Mazzy Star (and i noticed Lush mentioned, so that too.) If you wanna do Shoegaze, go ahead and do so. I'll watch it,maybe i'll find something there too.

Hey Pasi. Gene Clark solo is awesome. I want to get more since I just have Roadmaster on vinyl so far. Untitled is a really great album. It seems more people than I thought don't really connect with Sweetheart of the Rodeo, either. Love Mazzy Star and Lush, too! At least Lush out of those two will be featured in the shoegaze video. It's a genre I really love. Yes, maybe you will find something you like from it! Have a great day! Thanks. Peace.

Oops, I didn't know the vol. 2 of the Byrd's Requiem for the Timeless is available. It was published in 2017 and is over 1200 pages!!! lol It covers the lives of the now deceased members: Gene Clark, Michael Clarke, Skip Battin, et al. Your video has put the Byrd's front and center again on my listening agenda. I ordered the Vol. 2 from Monster Books in England with shipping it is about $38 or so for a new hardback copy. That's the lowest I found on the net. One review said it could be read as a stand alone volume separate from Vol. 1 if desired. Even the individual chapters (eg. the one on Gene Clark is over 300 pages) are like individual books. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that if you're interested. Now I'm going to go play Eight Miles High very loud. lol All the best.

Hello Hanna; Great Byrds ranking. You done a good job. Why? original flip side of Eight Miles High. Like them all. I agree with the entire list. I'm a Byrds fan as you know, & the order you chose is fine. Many picks from 5D, Younger Than, Notorious, Turn Turn, & Mr. Tamborine All good LP's. Sweetheart of the Rodeo, the Gram Parson's LP. A change in direction. Saved only by You ain't goin nowhere. The Notorious Byrd, I like Old John Robertson, Wasn't born to follow, in addition to the others.Very good informative video. If I may make a suggestion, you might want to check out the Byrd's book So you Want to be a Rock & Roll star. It's done in chronological order regarding recordings & live performances, lots of facts. Take care. Your friend Tina!!!!

Thank you so much for bringing that Byrds book to my attention. I will definitely be looking that up! Sometimes I feel the Byrds are underappreciated and overlooked. They were pioneers! Have a great Sunday and thanks, as always! Peace.

I'm late to the party on seeing this video about one of my favorite bands. Guess I'm getting old because I remember when these were released back in the day. I agree with many of your choices especially the ones by Gene Clark. "If You're Gone" has to be one of his best of all time. A great writer and singer. My favorite album is The Notorious Byrd Brothers. Psychedelic!!! I still have my copies of all the early albums up until "Untitled", and just ordered the Byrd's Complete Columbia Albums Collection on cd. Also, if you like to read about music and musicians, you might check out "Byrds: Requiem For The Timeless vol.1 by Johnny Rogan. Beware though, it is over a thousand pages. An absolutely terrific video, Hanna. You obviously put in a lot of time and effort into it's making. You picked quite a few of the more obscure songs for your top 15 songs which is great to see. Thank goodness Mind Gardens wasn't included lol. For me it spoils an almost perfect album. Being a bit of a Roger McGuinn freak, I've listed my top Top 21 Byrds / McGuinn albums below with a comment or two against each of the non Byrds releases. You can see that I rate quite a few of his solo albums higher than those of The Byrds.
    1 Mr Tambourine Man
    2 Younger Than Yesterday
    3 Turn Turn Turn
    4 Notorious Byrd Brothers
5 Cardiff Rose (solo - 1976). Roger’s masterpiece produced by Mick Ronson, Bowie’s axeman from 1970-1973 and also Ian Hunter’s sideman from 1974 onwards. Ronson also produced classic albums such as Lou Reed’s Transformer and Morrissey’s Your Arsenal. Highlights include Friend, Round Table, a version of Bob Dylan’s Up To Me and Joni Mitchell’s Dreamland. The cover art is beautiful
    6 Fifth Dimension
7 Dr Byrds & Mr Hyde
8 Peace On You (solo - 1974). Features the reappearance of Rickenbacker jingle jangle sound on a few tracks. Brilliant album
9 Back From Rio (solo - 1991). Very slick and polished album with help from Tom Petty. The songs are very strong which puts it quite high on my list. This was around the “mature” revival when we had great comeback albums from people like Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, Dion, Brian Wilson, Duane Eddy and of course The Traveling Wilburys
    10 Sweetheart Of The Rodeo
11 Roger McGuinn (solo - 1973). Excellent debut album. Draggin’ (very Beach Boys influenced) is a highlight
    12 Ballad Of Easy Rider
13 McGuinn, Clark & Hillman (1979). This really works much better than The Byrds 1973 reunion. My three favourite Byrds. The sound is of its time but the songs are strong
14 Thunderbyrd (solo - 1979). Features a great version of Tom Petty’s American Girl
15 Roger McGuinn & Band (solo - 1975). Good solid album but with a dreadful cover
    16 Farther Along
    17 Untitled
    18 Byrdmaniax
19 City (McGuinn & Hillman with Gene Clark - 1980). Quite dated but with a few good tunes. Awful cover
    20 The Byrds (1973)
21 McGuinn-Hillman (1981). Terrible album, dated and the songs are very weak
Good grief, you may need to take a sparkling water break to get through that.
Again, I must say that was a great video! Have a fun weekend!

Oh, I actually have that McGuinn, Clark & HIllman. It's in my pile of albums I still need to listen to. Thank you for the reminder! I'm surprised you rank the Untitled album so low on your list. Thank you, Hanna. I think Untitled is just an OK album, it's maybe a bit too horizontal bordering ever so slightly on blandness and I've never been too keen on Chestnut Mare which is a bit too sickly sweet for me. I do like the live album though. You will love Cardiff Rose. On one track Roger McGuinn does punk, well the nearest to punk he would ever get, and it doesn't sound silly

Great video Hanna, always have time for your rankings as you can just 'talk' music so well - a lot of thought goes on in your listening! The top songs were a revelation (your no 1 had me running off to play it - what a tune! Perfectly straddles folk and the Beatles while bringing something new). Now the albums I could at least pick your #1 and #2 from previous videos and comments.
I do hope Sweetheart clicks one day for you, but I can see why it hasn't - besides the obvious country sounds, it kind of sticks out as a weird outlier among their earlier career, especially for hardcore Byrds devotees such as yourself. Even for me it's still an incongruous leap from Notorious Byrd Bros (which is this perfected amalgam of influences and new sounds) to an almost retrograde step into genre-aping. And yet, it is clearly a new ingredient in the melting pot for later era Byrds....
anyway, love talking and theorising about music! You've got me going off on a byrds kick today - thanks! And thanks for your video, cheers :) Looking forward to the Shoegaze video, whenever that pops up. Have a great one, Hanna!
