Thanks for the help. I also had an issue. When you update firmware, you turn on w/ PTT and 1 held down. If you do that to read from the device, it doesn't work. Turn the radio off and just turn it back on without anything held down. You can now use the software
I just received an HD1 today. After installing software and USB driver I experienced the same issue. I tried two other computers and had the same results. I tried your little trick too and it didn’t work. All I can think of is the cable or the radio comm port is defective. So, sending the unit back tomorrow. I have a TYT 2017 and it reads and writes every time on all three computers. Also, programming from the radio keypad, the radio won’t assign zones or ctcss. After 2 hours of messing with a new radio and no joy I have had enough. Cheers.
Ok so, i tried a few times. It is challenging however with a little patience, it does the trick. First, i had to disable firewalls and antivirus. Check your com port then for firmware upgrade, yes, you have to put in in DFU mode. Second, after the firmware upgrade, after turning off and turning back on the radio, i made sure the com port was set with the trick shown and the radio, and i was able to read the radio correctly as well as programming the basic settings. Rest is yet to come but i wanted to thank the author of the radio for showing this com port trick. I almost gave up until i saw this video. Don't give up and be patient. It pays off. Windows 10 64, Dell Latitude XPS. (I have to mention i was not successful on Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (Windows 10/64) nor on an Old Dell M1210 Vista laptop)
Nothing was working and I just finally installed the last update: "CH340 USB Driver (support Windows 11) (New)" from the Ailunce website in the ressource tab and it worked.
My cable only works in one of my USB ports. I think It needs a com port lower than 10. Same as the GD-88. Mine went from 17 to 1. By changing USB ports.

W7, initial connections worked fine. Ran into this problem with second attempt several weeks later. Glad I found this video! KC3MLA
I bought this one with my own money and I think it's a great radio. It's not perfect but it's pretty good

Thank you, so mine came up as port 23 I changed this to port 3 and worked straight away, seems it don’t like high numbers

An update, I can read the version information fine from the firmware update software. The problem seems to be the programing software itself.
Idiot me, did not realize you just power it on to read/write to it, thought it was the same as firmware update. Dummy me.
