- Let's go back, back to the beginning. Back to when the earth, the sun, the stars all aligned. Today I'm looking into the Fashion Fever era of Barbie. I am an adult doll collector and this review is intended for adults in the doll collecting hobby.
Owning just one Fashion Fever doll is something I've wanted as a collector. I remember seeing them but was going through foster care and wanting a doll felt embarrassing.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. I was in the system for most of my childhood too, so I can definitely relate.
No one really talks about Barbie Fashion Fever, I LOVE THAT LINE SOOOO MUCH!
Oh honey, all Fashion Fever dolls had posters and shoes until 2007. Also the clear plastic stands were brittle even when it was brand new. Fashion Fever was THE barbie line when I first started collecting so you can imagine why I am so hateful towards current Mattel.
Skipper and Barbue uses Kanekalon so be very gentle with that hair otherwise it'll become matted and gross very quality.
That male doll in the poster is actually Blaine since Barbie dumped Ken around this time.
Also yes, the mesh layering thing was very on trend.
Fashion Fever also uses a lot of My Scene accessories and shoes btw.
Hilary Duff also designed some fashion packs for Barbie lol. Maybe look up My Scene lots too if you want some more BDSM....
Fashion Fever jeans were just so bulky and loose due to the rubber legs so the fit was always funky.
Anyway thid was a trip down memory lane for as a collector especially since Fashionistas are the same price as Fashion Fever used to be...

It would be impossible and unrealistic for the present day Barbie play line to replicate the quality of the vintage fashions for under $5.00! The zippers, metal snaps, fabric hats and purses, silk flower bouquets, metal utensils, etc, are all in the past! That's why many doll collectors search for the dolls from their youth! I was a child when Barbie debuted and it was her miniature ensembles with the tiny accessories, that I loved! Viewing my favorite NRFB Barbie doll vintage fashions from the 1960s - 1970s in my collection makes me happy and young again!
Is there a reason Mattel won't just raise their prices and make better dolls? Parents will still buy their kids Barbies even if the price goes up. Some Barbies in the 1980s (playline, they all were back then) cost the same or more than they do now and parents still bought them. Hell, they buy a ton of that color reveal junk right now that costs way too much for a bunch of cheap plastic.
@@toykeyper8914 As a longtime loyal lover of Barbie doll, I felt obligated to defend Mattel against the negative comments from collectors regarding the quality issue. I personally dislike velcro and the molded plastic accessories, so I only buy what I truly love. However, doll reviewers have to keep purchasing in order to make new videos and they're not happy!

For years, as an adult, I didn’t collect because I had other priorities and they were literally making more great Barbies every day. Now I am in my 40s, with some extra time and money, and the new Barbies are noticeably worse than what I grew up with and/or $100+. I’m also in a smaller city in Canada, which adds a whole layer of cost to get older Barbies. I might end up with a few Fashion Fever Barbies, but mostly I’ll just have to look at pictures and videos like this one.
Ahhhh, the times when we didn’t have to worry about the barbie doll having a grainy shiny face and cheap hair because we don’t even have the bare minimum today... and there are still people who defend the company that killed the most iconic fashion doll in a spam of 10-5 years
I lived the line with the fabrics and details but some of these fashions aged like milk but I’m from the time period so I can see the appeal
Loved this review! I was already "too old for Barbies" at this point in time. My last Barbie purchase as a teenager was the OG Generation Girl dolls 98/99 and then once I was in high school, it wasn't something I did anymore. Now that I'm older, I just purchased my first home as a single gal during this pandemic and somehow got into collecting Barbies again! Making all the childhood dreams come true. This line looks awesome and has me feeling nostalgic for my high school wardrobe. I am going to keep my eyes peeled for that blonde Teresa...holy cow. I need her! Thanks again for showing these!
Mattel turned playline Barbie into a balloonhead with Fashion Fever; we collected them like crazy, but we still commented about it on the boards. Gen Girl Barbie and Lara molds looked weird with the expanded head size, so I'd only buy them if they had great outfits. Teresa and Kayla looked amazing so I'd buy them no matter what. Mattel added other facemolds, those playsets, and most of the outfits still look really good. Then they simplified and cut corners and dropped all the things that made FF distinct. You've seen the pictures.
I still want the FF Benetton Barbies but they're a MILLION DOLLARS or $300 but they're really expensive, seriously.

Thank you for this video! Fashion Fever Barbies are my absolute favorite to collect. The clothes are so nicely made and the doll's are beautiful! I especially love the Teresa faces of this line, they are stunning. I also really wish I was a Barbie collector in the mid-2000, we really missed out! The pajama dolls of this line usually came with a pair of slippers, attached in a little thing on the outside of the package (possibly your's was missing?). Some of the dolls even came with purses made of (gasp) fabric!!! I wish the Fashionistas were more like this line, at least if they had better clothes! I remove the cheapy sack dresses and redress all my Fashionistas and they instantly look like more expensive dolls.

There's a reason why I'm willing to pay more for secondhand Fashion Fever clothes than I will for a fashion pack nowadays. I absolutely LOVE the Fashion Fever era dolls. The faces are so pretty, the clothes are so high quality, just everything was so amazing. I'm so glad that the early 2000s fashions are coming back, so photos with the fashions from this era still fit right in.
I love the barbie fashion fever line. Fortunately, fashion fever dolls are quite easy to get here in the Philippines. I always see a lot of people selling their dolls in online selling apps. Btw I really like the skipper one. And the barbie one really looks so much like the millie face, but when it’s painted nicely.
I collect the Barbie movie dolls so when I saw the two with the Odette and Shiver shirt I got so excited! Now I think I need those two Barbies because the attention to detail on them and they are just so frickin adorable. They can be the two Barbie movie fan girls who get to sit on the shelf next to my Odette and Annika 😂😂😂😂
It’s so funny that you’re buying Barbie dolls from this era, because i have been on an early 2000s kick for a little while now. i even bought a 2005 Totally Real House.
i never thought that i would be nostalgic for my teenage/early 20s years but here i am.
i especially appreciate the body moulds of that time. They still had bend/snap legs and a fairly small waistlines that helped them to gracefully wear clothing.
One thing that i wish Mattel held onto longer is the flexible waists that were only featured on the Jewel Girls.
That was such a cool feature and i remember being impressed with it way back then.
i have only one Jewel Girl Barbie, but i’m using it for my modified Barbie Extra #3.
My feelings exactly, I just recently discovered that flexible waist and have no idea how I could have missed it. It seems we may never run out of new fascinations :D
I remember collecting all four of the PJ Fashion Fever dolls, and unless I'm mistaken, there should have been a pair of bunny rabbit type slippers that came with the doll. The slippers were packaged outside the package, and they looked like the little medallions that hang off the top. You get the medallion with an image of the latest wave of fashionista dolls, and then there'll be another Medallion hanging off that had a pair of slippers seals to it with plastic. I'll have to look into that to be sure, but you may be able to find a little pair of bunny rabbit slippers online sold separately, and add it to your collection. The Fashion Fever line was definitely one of the best lines in the history of Barbie doll!

People are very conformist and also the sick fanaticism of barbie has also affected us in general, since anything that mattel launches they support as the best in the world, but they do not demand better things, until consumers begin to demand good products and stop buying garbage just because "it's inclusive", that's when quality will return
@@Alexander-xp7ii I have always loved and been a fan of everything that was Barbie but I really think that Mattel is making Barbie worse and worse, it is something objective.
I used to love Barbies until 2013 where Barbies get cheaper when it comes to fashions and the doll itself gets boring because of the articulation and hollow legs, unlike from the early years of Barbies where, even the basic Barbies have a good articulation because her knees can bend due to rubberized and bendable legs that you can't find on Barbies nowadays.

A technical correction from the textiles part of me: it's dye sublimation printing that has allowed Mattel to go wild with printing fake details. I won't have you besmirching screen printing this way.
Textiles part also says the white fabric on Skipper's shirt is technically called ribbing.
We knew the dolls were good back then, but we had no idea they wouldn't continue being so good. Here's hoping that people in 15 years won't be opening Barbie Extra or BMR1959 dolls and lamenting about how much better Barbie quality was in 2020.

I also love the last Barbie because of her huge eyes haha! After analyzing her face for a while, she looks a lot like the Betty and Veronica Barbie’s that Mattel had released!
I'm always surprised to see people finding old dolls in such pristine condition. The Fashion Fever dolls I found has damaged boxes, rotten rubber bands & dusty/dirty/grimy dolls inside. 🤷🏻♂️
I should be thankful that they're available. But I'm a doll collector in the loosest sense, so even if it's rare I don't really have the urge to buy them.

The dolls are EVERYTHING, The diversity in this line could've definitely been better, but the fashions and quality is everything compared to paper tub sacks mattel releases now

The sad thing is that some of the designers who worked on the Fashion Fever line are still with Mattel (Bill Greening, Robert Best), and have seen the degradation of quality first hand.
I collect Skipper dolls, and I have never even heard of this one. SHe's beautiful - you are so lucky to have her at that price. Love the poster!
Few years ago, I saw a few of Fashion Fever and California Girl in my local store and they're still new in box. But I didn't bought it. Now, I am so regretful that I didn't bought it back then.
I regret not buying any of the Fashion Fever when they were ins stores because the quality is uncomparable. Glad to see they ares till available through 2nd hand stores. Loved their clothes.

The hair quality on all of this dolls is kanekalon, in my opinion the best hair,you can do everything with it and look amazing but Mattel discontinued this hair type in 2014 or 2015 something like this and they replaced it with nylon which is the worst hair type ever, if you want to produce good quality nylon it's expensive so they use the low quality one that is really cheap and saran is the other option but I'm pretty sure they would stop using saran too because the quality of the today Barbie brand is really low
I read somewhere that they stopped using kanekalon because the manufacturer Mattel used to buy from stopped making it. Personally, I'm not a big fan of that hair type due to how fluffy it is, though some dolls have surprised me with it, like it actually feels like I can style it, if that makes sense.

I got quite a few of those when they first came out. Those stands broke like that even new. With all the ones I have - about ten or twelve maybe, I think only half of the stands survived. That's only because I stopped using them ! Yeah, those dolls are great, I love 'em ! I wish I would have gotten more.

Thanks for the review. I loved your fashion fever dolls. I bought a couple of Fashion Fevers, one was a Desiree and one was a Kayla. They both had gorgeous hair and facial screening. The waist holders on the stands broke too. I was really naughty and transferred them to Made to Move bodies and they are favorites in my collection. I just don't like the rubbery clicky legs.

I wanna start collecting cause I've always been so interested in owning dolls also unpopular opinion fairytopia dolls are iconic and I loved how each doll had a different face mold so you wouldn't be getting the same face mold unlike good old Millie I don't hate the Millie sculpt it just I'm tired of it and I wish they would give barbie a new face already cause almost every few years we get a new face mold I mean super star lasted from the 1970s to the mid 90s but I wish that Mattel would bring back they face style from the 00s back that would be amazing especially since 00s fashion trends are making a comeback but knowing good old..cheap ... mattel they would never take risk or go out of the box cause now parents say wearing makeup makes you a bad person now fashionista are cheaper don't even wear heels almost very little are barely passable,1959-2014 everything went down Hill like how come having 60s years of quality Mattel some how forgot what's a fashionista even the collector dolls suck mattel has been trying to push pixel face in the words of Regina george-stop trying to make it happen it's never going to happen barbie extra in my opinion was okay but in my opinion barbie extra should have been a huge comeback for Barbies quality cause when I first heard of extra I was expecting more than one outfit and a stand but instead we got dolls that were stuck in 2015 the dolls played it safe and that's not what I was expecting this is the main reason I stopped caring for mattel and instead I started caring for mga because mga know what is in trend and is able to keep their customers happy and are giving us the quality we deserve if mattel sees this they really should be taking notes from mga.

Hey - I just found your Mini-Me doll! The 'Simba Steffie Love Kevin Urban' doll looks more like you than the 'Galoob Czar Nicholas II' doll! Unfortunately, the only ones I found were on eBay from sellers in Germany and the shipping is over $40.00, unless a European collector friend can purchase and send it to you!
Fashion Fever is the best among others. It's quality is mmwahhh!! Voila! And also, 2009 - 2012 fashionistas is iconic as well. After that 2015 fashionistas turn up.. ABSOLUTELY GARBAGE!!!!

After Fashion Fever, there’s the Top Model Line and was surprised with screening quality, a collector quality in playline. I miss this quality, they really standout in store among the other dolls before even with their huge rival bratz. Now barbie doesn’t standout anymore, everyone is talking about rainbow high and ever high. Now even collector barbies are very low quality, poorly painted, very light body and printed dress
