  • The Boston Hungarian-American Science Club cordially invites you to its next event.
    Speaker: Eszter Hars, Ph.D.
Title: Rare Diseases and Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome: challenges, opportunities, and hope
Short Video Intro: • Shwachman-Diamond Synd...
Dr. Eszter Hars was born and raised in Hungary until middle school, when she moved with her family to Germany. She lived there until she entered graduate school in the US in 2000.
Dr. Hars earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, in 2005. Her research focused on ageing (and the role of autophagy) and cancer (the molecular mechanism of tAML, a subtype of leukemia).
Since moving to Boston, she has worked in the biomedical research, software, and scientific publishing industries in various functions, including customer service and support, business development, training, branding, and marketing. Currently, Dr. Hars is President of an early stage biotechnology company, developing cell isolation tools for diabetes and other diseases.
In 2020, she founded Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome Alliance (www.sdsalliance.org), a nonprofit organization focused on accelerating research and therapy development for Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS). SDS is a rare genetic disorder that affects many parts of the body, and puts patients at high risk of developing blood disorders and leukemia, which often requires stem cell / bone marrow transplant.
In her presentation “Rare Diseases and Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome: challenges, opportunities, and hope” on February 28th, in honor of rare disease day, she will share with you insights into three related topics:
    - Challenges when dealing with rare disease in general
    - Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (that's our rare disease): science and challenges as a rare disease
    - Bone marrow registries: why they exist and how they work
We look forward to seeing you at this event!
