The Academy should be embarrassed that they gave the Academy Award to Gwyneth Paltrow who hasn't gone on to do much with her career. Marisa has done alot more.

Yeah, the Paltrow/Harvey Weinstein partnership was super creepy. She is an untalented individual who had a front row seat on the nepotism express and the Oscars went along with it

    • @liteflightify
      @liteflightify 13 днів тому +5

She was seen as a huge up and comer, was considered “snubbed” for Emma, had nepotism on her side, and ‘Shakespeare’ did financially better than most thought it would. Her win was expected even if several other nominees deserved it more. Also, doing or not doing big things afterwards shouldn’t come into the equation for who should win for what year.

    • @Marcel_Audubon
      @Marcel_Audubon 13 днів тому

@@liteflightify the only people who thought she was ever snubbed for anything were her highly payed publicists who planted those snubbed stories.
I'd like to know the details of her relationship to Harvey Weinstein. She seems to be the only young thing of her generation who wasn't assaulted by him, yet she worked for him. How many mornings waking up in Harvey's arms is a Miramax Oscar campaign worth?

Hey there Fritz. Thank you for taking the time to created and post the video.
    1. I remember when Marisa received her well-deserved Oscar, and it was a spectacular “surprise!” This is a time when I truly felt the Academy got right.
    2. I had seen all the other fine performances, and, in my opinion, Marisa’s was the best. A comedic performance of a fantastic and loveable character that could easily been over the top.
    3. I have viewed My Cousin Vinny recently and the film not only holds up well, and Marisa was also phenomenal. Her character is a wonderfully memorable one and I have seen the film 4 times. No offense and in my opinion but the other four films of the nominees I have always had zero interest for me to re-watch.
    4. The Academy makes huge ludicrous mistakes the Academy makes regularly is the “career” performance over the far superior one. Or the corrective mistake: “oops, we should have given this to that actor 3 years ago.”
    5. In my personal opinion I loved that she was nominated for “In The Bedroom” and “The Wrestler” for validation as an actress. She did not need that validation from me but well earned.
    6. Marisa or the other 4 nominees were not the only great performances that were not nominated that year:
    7. Alfre Woodard in Passion Fish; Angela Basset in Malcom X; Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns; Maggie Smith or Kathy Najimy in Sister Act. I personally think Alfre Woodard or Michelle Pfeiffer deserved a spot more than the other four. Marisa still should have received the Oscar in my opinion.
    8. I live in Los Angeles and the rumors about her award and Jack Palance’s mistake started within days. It was awful and I could not even understand what Marisa was going thru. This was in the newspapers and the news itself for the world to see. Imagine your name and reputation being exposed to the world like that.
    9. An actress must work 3 times harder and make less money than actors in Hollywood.
    10. If a man is demanding, he is assertive and/or is creating a character. If a woman is demanding, she is mean, unprofessional, and difficult.
    11. The fact that this was “news” in unbelievable. In April:
    A. Four Comers Hantavirus outbreak killing 13 people in the US.
    B. Great Flood of 1993 along the Mississippi River killing 38-50 people and $15 billion in damages.
    C. The Waco siege leading to the deaths of 76 people.
    D. The World Health Organization declares tuberculosis a global emergency.
    E. According to the FBI in 1993 there were 24,526 murders in the United States.
    12. But the most important news of that time is that horrific “Oscar mistake”

Great overview of Tomei's Oscar win and career. I love how you addressed the tiresome bias of drama over comedy in terms of deeming a performance award-worthy. Tomei's does fantastic, singular work in "Vinny" that does not pale in comparison to just about any other winner in the category- she completely nails the role. I believe I remember Mike Clark in USA Today pushing hard for Tomei during awards season, so at least she had one known media presence in her corner.

I was in my early 20s and remember watching Husbands and Wives at the cinema. Judy Davis blew me away. I was agape at her magnificent, fierce, wondrous performance. I remember thinking, Not only is she going to get nominated for this, but she’s going to win, because it is one of the best supporting performances in the history of cinema. I actually went back and watched the movie again just to rewatch her performance. I hadn’t seen My Cousin Vinny when it came out, so I watched it on VHS right before the Oscars. I didn’t think Marisa had any hope of winning. Yes, she was perfect and delightful in that movie, but I thought it was one of those performances where the nomination was the award.
I thought if anyone had a chance of beating Judy Davis, it would be Joan Plowright for the sympathy vote, or Miranda Richardson for her body of work that year. I was absolutely flabbergasted when Marisa Tomei won. I was hosting an Oscar watching party, and everyone in the room gasped. I remember one of my friends said, “Now nobody is going to get a perfect score on their Oscar pool ballot” and we all laughed.
Before the ceremony, I agreed with the prediction that I read in Premier magazine, I think. It said she has no hope of winning unless she won the xenophobe vote. She was the only American in the category. I remember thinking after she won, I think they were right!

Brilliantly researched, and, more importantly, compassionate. The idea that such rumors can gain traction had a lot to do with the landscape of Hollywood at the time: it was the heyday of the Weinstein epoch, in which so many of the Weinstein Company's productions (even if those productions were actually British productions which were being distributed in the US by the Weinstein Company) became Oscar contenders. And the other nominees that year were all British (plus Australian) in prestige projects which were either Weinstein "produced" or the kind of projects that Weinstein lusted after (such as the Merchant-Ivory movies). And the fact that not just one person (Marisa Tomei) but another (Jack Palance) would have their reputations tarnished by this rumor is what is so horrendous. BTW this is a very surprising video from you, since you have concentrated on Best Actress races, and this is your first "deep dive" in the Supporting Actress category.

@@FritzandtheOscars But in a way, this was an appropriate follow-up to the extensive 1950 coverage: you had the winner as a (lauded) comedy performance over dramatic tour-de-forces by veteran actresses. And you also refused to join in the (now) general hindsight of claiming that Judy Holliday's win was a "surprise" (as you so acutely pointed out, Holliday's win was actually considered a real possibility in most of the trades, and it was always a three-way race between Holliday, Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson). And you were very perceptive about Tomei's performance, and how it had been critically acclaimed at the time, but more than half a year later, the more dramatic performances of Judy Davis, Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave and Miranda Richardson were in the forefront. But what's shocking is that many of the same critics who had praised Tomei suddenly acted as if her performance was some sort of aberration.

She's a good actor who always delivers exactly what is asked of her without fuss. You don't have to be fireworks all the time, but it's not quite as much of a contrast with the rest of her resume as say Mira Sorvino's win was (how much Weinstein taking against her affected things, we shall never know, but it can't have helped), but I would say that comparison is the safest one from a worthy/unworthy level (and I don't object to Sorvino either.)
I do like it when something unexpected happens like a comedy or a movie that isn't defined by its message or misery actually picks up a senior award. It feels more real somehow, as if rewarding a well made, entertaining movie for being well made and entertaining wasn't the original point of the Oscars.
I think her nominations for In the Bedroom and The Wrestler vindicated her too. As if she could say "look, see, I am for real," unlike Sorvino who hasn't ever really gotten close since 1995 and probably won't again, sadly, given there are a few high points, Summer of Sam (and I have a soft-spot for action movie The Replacement Killers on its own terms as a fun Friday evening kind of film).

The entire thing was ridiculous, when anyone can see who recorded the ceremony that Palance was reading the card in the envelope that said her name. Marisa had a slow go of it in the 90s after MCV, but proved her detractors wrong receiving two more nominations. Interesting that all the other actresses, except Richardson picking up one more in 1994, have received no more Oscar noms (Davis, who I adore, has received since received three Emmys, along with Redgrave, another stellar actress, picking up one more Emmy.) Plowright is retired, but a Tony winner. Richardson continues to work. I actually picked her to win that night. With the golden globe, and three well received films in one year, that carries a lot of weight. Glad you brought up the Marisa win was probably slim, since voters couldn’t make up their mind, so maybe like 21 percent of the vote. The only similar win I can think of was when Goldie Hawn won in 1969. Her Oscar victory was widely ridiculed, but like Marisa, she proved the haters all wrong.

I'm referring to the 23rd and 65th Academy Awards. At least people didn't convince the world that Judy Holliday was announced as the wrong winner, and many saw the win as deserving. Call me a sucker, but I always root for the underdog or the unconventional once in a while. I still stand by Holliday winning the Oscar along with Tomei winning the Oscar, too.

What a nice person you are. I wonder: Anybody forces you to see it? If it seems long for you, very simple, don't watch it and keep your comments to yourself and keep enjoy the precious life elsewhere.

@@pedrorocha9722 well, I don't think that your time is that precious if your take a minute or two of that precious time yours to answer me. And yes, I get irritated by people who come to only comment annoying self-referring coments like" 1 Hour video is too long, my life is too precious" What kind of support is that supposed to be? Here's an advice: Do you want to really support? click you liked the video, even if you don't watched it, and that's it. That would take up a lot less of your "precious" time.

So basically you're saying that Hollywood is just a bunch of sore losers? Who would've thought it with all their other countless "LoVeLy" traits 😂
Losing sucks especially if it's something you're really passionate about and put your all into but how you react to that loss is just as important IMO and if you don't react well you'll not only lose but also come out looking like a sore loser who can't be happy for other people and that ain't cute 🤷🏻‍♀️

Considering the competition, the win was absurd. I never again took the Academy Awards seriously. It was almost as bad as when Judy Holliday won over Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis.
