In china I've never taken 3rd class green trains. They're super cheap for the poorest people in china. I heard most of the times they're quite empty you can lie down and sleep on your seat. However, they may get crowded occasionally during holiday season. It's not typical.

When the bottom rung of train services "general coach" has risen to provide reasonably decent standards - one must conclude that China has risen out of a poor economy status and into the upper middle income bracket successfully. Nops. Seating == Chair Car AC. Sleeper Second == 3rd AC. First AC and Second AC are still better in India. They are clean and there bathrooms are clean too. You get a shower facility too. Don't know about China. If they have AC coaches compare them to AC coaches in India not sleeper or General.
