I love painting musicians..especially cellists..What a face!!!!! What a cellist! If only I could be in there with my paints!!!!!!! Peggy Smith Saint John NB Canada
Wow...I am looking for inspiring recording of this this concerto - just now i prepare it - and every other was so sad(Noras), techically weak, not in style(Feuermann). And finally I found somebody who understands this music the same way like me - funny, virtuoso, delicate catilena, really entertaiment music of Haydn's epoque - outstanding performance, thank you Misha!
After I saw what he did to the Bach cello suite, I didn't think Maisky was capable of doing something subtle. but this haydn is quite good, good style.
The guy playing cello in the back ground is just like..Soon. XD (P.s. I'm a 12 yr old cellist :D love the instrument one day when I'm older I want to change peoples lives with it and like he did to me I am inspired!!! :D)
I agree with mattgres. I personally hate his re-recording of the suites, and I've lately heard him playing Shostakovich nº1 horribly out of tune. But his early recording are awesome. This one in particular is the best rendition of Haydn I've ever heard. My impression is that he was an awesome cellist spoiled by self-indulgence...
He hurries it along, to the discomfort of his fellow players at times, and though his skill and technique are undeniable, formidable, and draws out some lovely tone, even in the rush, there is something lacking- perhaps that's Haydn-while Mischa tends to take centre stage.
I suppose it could be that he's a really big guy, physically, though that's unlikely for a Russian Jewish male (though not impossible), but does anyone else think the cello he's playing on looks rather small?
+paukenhamster I think and feel that Maisky is one of the most talented Cellist. I honestly don't like Yo-Yo Ma's style... too much technical with no "feeling", no soul on the music... however, the same I felt when heard Maisky latest Bach Cello suite No.1 in GM... the one in concert... no heart, too much technical skills show off. Plus, I'm not such listener of Haydn, so I can't tell if this current execution is good, average or outstanding... I will take a listen on Gautier's style. Anyways... all classical music is awesome!
Heard him play The Swan once and wondered if it would ever end - slower than the piano/cello movement from Quartet for the End of Time! Also, much of his Bach I find very self-indulgent, it reveals more about his ego than the music. But the worst was a chamber concert by him, Lang Lang and Vadim Repin. All fine players but three huge egos...listen to me, listen to me, listen to me!!!! Hes a fine cellist. My complaint is with what he chooses to do with his extraordinary ability.
There's no random playing from this master. Every single movement and tone is designed and carefully organised by his mind.

He's the most talented cellist of our time along with Yo-Yo Ma.

Wow...I am looking for inspiring recording of this this concerto - just now i prepare it - and every other was so sad(Noras), techically weak, not in style(Feuermann). Mendelssohn is my own God, but when I hear this - there is yet another God - Haydn.
So good.
@jkim846 I noticed that too, it looks really sparkly! I'm sure miah9 is right though. ;)
Que belleza
he's like, "Bitch, I'm gonna conduct and play at the same time!"
nice style
Love his tempo , ! And of course his playing , beautyful tune and phrasing .
The guy playing cello in the back ground is just like..Soon. XD (P.s. I'm a 12 yr old cellist :D love the instrument one day when I'm older I want to change peoples lives with it and like he did to me I am inspired!!! :D)
How's the progress going? :P
along with some other pieces
How is he conducting the orchestra while also playing in the orchestra?
Exquisite
When and where was this wonderful performance? This is obviously a much younger version of Mr. Maisky than the current version.
Not too sure where, but it was recorded in 1987.
And so God (Rostropovich) gave birth to his son Jesus (Mischa Maisky)
LoL, I m now 1st grade of high music school and I am trying to learn this.
Very nice. Which orchestra is this he is playing with?
can I say he plays well?
Gostaria de levar esse concerto pra Igrejinha do Hospital Federal de Bonsucesso - Rio Brasil. VOCÊ PODE ME AJUDAR?
It's the Blackadder!
is there an edition for the one he is playing..There is a lot of virtuosity that isnt in the other editions
whos favorite cellist is he not!? hahhahaha, he is mine too
He makes this seem so easy ...

"I'm so awesome my sweat shimmers like glitter." - Mischa
Conducts with cello bow; Like a baws
Apparently this is the most difficult piece for cello ever written.
Ever heard of Kodaly’s Cello Sonata?
He hurries it along, to the discomfort of his fellow players at times, and though his skill and technique are undeniable, formidable, and draws out some lovely tone, even in the rush, there is something lacking- perhaps that's Haydn-while Mischa tends to take centre stage.
Anyone know how to get the sheet music for his cadenza?
Nathan Giorgetti I'm struggling to find it.
where's part 2???
Genius‼︎ yukaka777🌸
Wow he's a god! A hell freezer
hmm I don't think there is a sheet music at all, remember it is an improvisation.
Crazy cellista!! but he's the better!! :)
hahaah his hair is funny...other than this music was very inspirational! :)
... sparkly suit?
1:29 Tom Hulce playing the viola. Mhmmyesss
His fingers are incredible: |
I bet Maisky got *major* trim back in the day.
But then, there's this Haydn, so what do I know?
I suppose it could be that he's a really big guy, physically, though that's unlikely for a Russian Jewish male (though not impossible), but does anyone else think the cello he's playing on looks rather small?
i think that's his sweat... I guess even his sweat is awesome like him...
two people were so amazed by this performance that they accidentally hit the dislike button.
not bad for a bunch of beginners..
He plays very controlled, but I can't hear feelings in his playing :/
For me, the only one is Gautier Capuçon. He plays Haydn so gentle and perfect!
Close your eyes and listen again.

Knock-Out performance Balboa
#AmazingAtCello
haha you mean 10! :P :D I love it though so dont count me in! :D x)
I would not call this conducting as such, the orchestra does its job well.
baouss
