Is it just a matter of better clearances around the tool when pocketing?

multiHappyHacker I’m also wondering when this technique is better than just a good ole helix? Looks cool, but doesn’t look like a big helix pitch. 🤔

@@henrikforsberg683 with the traditional 3 axis boring the tool cuts more with the face than with the side but with this helical boring the tool cuts more with the side than the face which is better for the tool.
Correct me if i am wrong

@@ipadize kind of, most end mills cut better on the side rather than the bottom. this is allowing the tool to be presented to the material in a way that allows more of the side to engage the material at the cut.

@@salvadorebertolone OK OK, but if you have such a long overhang you don't want to make side cuts since it causes tool to deflect and vibrate. So it is better to get a tool mounted to a bulky conical holder to make it stiffer. But with such a holder you cannot reach that far straight down. You have to tilt enough to avoid collision with holder, so the solution is shown in this video. Of course there are some advantages and disadvantages. You should choose right strategy and tool to an application. The more strategies and tools you have the more and faster you can machine. Cheers!
