I love that sand through look, and now I’ve seen how it’s done I might have to try it on my next one. Thanks for the vids man, they’re some of the better ones on here. 🤙🏼
Waves looks sick! Board might just need the right fins for that size of wave or it might be too big for it. Interested to hear what happened to the fin looks like when you delam or break a snowboard.
Thanks. Yeh I’ve been trying to think of new projects. Watching boards being built will eventually feel like watching re runs so I’ll try change it up as much as possible
Like your vids and appreciate the work you’re putting in. Ha ha! You’re not an “Influencer” yet is possibly why no answer from FCS. I think we all know Futures are a better system anyways🤟 Great to see the surfing too, particularly on something you’ve crafted. Power on with your quality product👍
Thanks mate 🤙 Yeh I’ve had a few bad experiences with fcs customer service before but this blows my mind. All I want to know is why ? Nothing was hit in the surf.. it just fell apart. I wasn’t chasing a freebie just an explanation I’m 100% a futures guy now..
Another great video dude! Loved the bonus surfing footage, you always wonder how the finished board goes, shame FCS spoilt the party!!! One thing that would be really helpful is some info like how much resin you mixed for particular jobs etc. Loving your videos!!!
Thanks mate. The first surf was way too big anyways but I had to commit with the photographer there haha. For resin it changes from board to board and mostly it’s just an educated guess when I’m about to laminate. I think green light have a good chart you can reference
Nice project man. Curious about you rolling on the gloss coat instead of painting it on. Is it to avoid having to sand and Polish afterwards? And are you doing epoxy or poly resin?
Thanks man. That’s just an acrylic seal coat. No resin. I do it with both epoxy and poly. I’ll send ya some more detailed info on insta msg in a bit. This is secret sauce stuff! Haha
good video.I like your shop and tools. I haven't shaped in 25 years. but watching this makes me think I would like to start again. too bad the board didn't go so well, maybe for another surfer it might shred
It’s like riding a bike mate. You’ll never forget, although maybe a bit rusty. Yeh the board was always going to be a dog. But I don’t mind wasting a bit of time to experiment and try keep some rubbish outta the landfill. 🤙
Frankenstein looks like a FireWire volcanic seaside but in yellow. It don’t surf like a seaside even on the second attempt… it’s slow. Nice attempt at recycling that blank.
Great job, really enjoyed the step by step process. I make rc planes out of foam and use a hotwire for a lot of cutting and shaping. Also wondering why you paint before glassing? Fascinating similarities and differences. Not a big fan of the rough finish, but hey, it's your call and it certainly makes me think along different lines. Do it the way that you enjoy!
Thanks mate. This was an experiment at best. I was hoping the paint would hide the hideous scars in the foam but it didn’t. So I went with a yellow tint and that also didn’t. So last resort I though fck it and made it look trashy. I mean it already did haha
Nice project and great quality videos. It's interesting to see the build process. How about some repair videos? Help us to keep our boards in the water and not in the trash.
Great 👍 I definitely like the board testing clips...board looks great...but...yeah...guess it doesn't suit solid WA 😂 Good on you for giving it a go, looking forward to the next project
awesome job m8, i really enjoy ur videos, the board came out looking sick. Athough your solo board builds are very complete i loved seeing the surfing part of this one. i know that is a looot of work to do the videos so the surfing films u can do rarely when u feel like it to spice things up ehehe keep it up🤙🏽
Great video and music. Inspired move glueing those rails on. Great to see someone glass a board and plugs the right way too. Shame it didn't turn out better. What happened re.FCS failure?
Thanks mate. It was an experiment so it was always going to be hit and miss. FCS basically told me it was my fault and I hit something ( when I know for a fact I didn’t ) so I told them to stuff it. The fin just blew apart under stress.
Epic! What glue did you use to attach the extra foam on the rails? Epic paint finish! Did you roll over clear coat at the end? Sick. I was gonna comment that it looked like you fully lost a fin out there! 😀. You could notice it after the 17:00 min mark. You actually did pretty good with that kooked fin
I really enjoy your vids and this one in particular, thanks! Widening the blank with off cuts was clever and the surfing footage is a great bonus. In general, I appreciate how generous you are with your tips, tricks and knowledge, thanks. Could you please do a flax (hemp) cloth lamination with epoxy? Perhaps over paulownia? I’m about to give that a go and there isn’t much information about the process out there. If not, no worries, just keep up the good work! 🤙🏼
Whats the best way to get into shaping? Not many people are handing out apprenticeships! Selt taught seems to be the way most shapers started anyway? 🤙
Yeh you're correct. Its not a skill that is recognised as a trade so unfortunately you can't really find a way in unless you have a shaper that's willing to teach. Most people ( myself included ) are self taught and that is years of trial and error and research put it to just get a board that resembles something surf able... That was my initial reason for this channel. To help show some tricks I've learnt along the years.
Almost certainly a dumb question, but what's to prevent someone from piecing together some blocks of hard packing foam (the kind used for flat screen TVs and such) to make a blank? With the fiberglass resin melt it? Is it not durable enough? ... Thanks for the video.
Not a dumb question at all mate. Nothing really.. the only real issue is strength. The packing foam is generally a really low grade eps with large beads. The beads make it hard to get a nice smooth shape and the low strength increases snapping and heel dents. Some of those strength issues can be overcome with the appropriate glassing schedule. Also incorporating a stringer would help. Also the glue lines between pieces of foam can be an issue to shape as it’s harder than the surrounding foam. BUT I have seen it done and I personally think it’s awesome. Better than just throwing it in the rubbish.
Great effort. I found a broken longboard that I want to make into a mini Simmons. Is there a good method to peeling all the fiber glass off? Thinking of shallow cuts and pry with putty knife?
Thanks mate. It’s always better to try upcycle rather than just throw it out. To get the glass off you can use a dremel or jigsaw and cut very thinly along the rails. From there you can pry up. You will lose some foam so try to make sure the shape you’re attempting to get out of the broken board has enough space to allow for the lost foam. Good luck 🤙
hey man would you mind showing or mentioning the products you use for the different processes? im getting into shaping and, besides the obvious laminating resins and tools and others,id love to know how you glued both blanks and what you used as a filler! thanks, the vids are sick!!!! thanks for the effort!
I was honestly thinking the same whilst out there. He took quite a few beatings. And I don’t want this to sound derogatory because it’s not, the dude was inspiring. But imagine a caterpillar. Kinda used his chest and shoulders and snuck his legs up under. Super impressive.
No you use sanding resin. It’s just lam resin with a wax additive to make the resin sandable. Originally I wanted to see if the yellow paint would hide the scars but it didn’t so I put some pigment into the resin.
@@Shrednaught hahaha about time.. After Nick showing me the error of my ways.. :P I do feel futures lead the way with variety of fin choice, and even the box design.. having the flanges front and back do help with preventing that box sinking (like fcs2 are prone to do). Hey thanks for sharing all your videos first of all. I have a board that needs a major repair and i want to strengthen. The board is not old but very light and fragile. It is already very thin so i think delaminating and reshapingis out of question but how do i fix all the little presure dents over the deck? Any thoughts?
Thanks for watching. Without seeing the board it’s hard to answer but if it’s just heel dents on the deck of the board your best to just leave them and surf. Next board ask for a stronger glass job on the deck. 6/4 is a good start for a normal board
Didn’t think about adding scrap rail foam to the blank. Looks sick 🤙🏽
It was a process that’s for sure haha
