    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  3 роки тому

      Yeh you're correct. Its not a skill that is recognised as a trade so unfortunately you can't really find a way in unless you have a shaper that's willing to teach. Most people ( myself included ) are self taught and that is years of trial and error and research put it to just get a board that resembles something surf able...
      That was my initial reason for this channel. To help show some tricks I've learnt along the years.

    Almost certainly a dumb question, but what's to prevent someone from piecing together some blocks of hard packing foam (the kind used for flat screen TVs and such) to make a blank? With the fiberglass resin melt it? Is it not durable enough? ... Thanks for the video.

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  Рік тому +1

      Not a dumb question at all mate.
      Nothing really.. the only real issue is strength. The packing foam is generally a really low grade eps with large beads. The beads make it hard to get a nice smooth shape and the low strength increases snapping and heel dents. Some of those strength issues can be overcome with the appropriate glassing schedule. Also incorporating a stringer would help. Also the glue lines between pieces of foam can be an issue to shape as it’s harder than the surrounding foam. BUT I have seen it done and I personally think it’s awesome. Better than just throwing it in the rubbish.

    Great effort. I found a broken longboard that I want to make into a mini Simmons. Is there a good method to peeling all the fiber glass off? Thinking of shallow cuts and pry with putty knife?

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks mate. It’s always better to try upcycle rather than just throw it out.
      To get the glass off you can use a dremel or jigsaw and cut very thinly along the rails. From there you can pry up. You will lose some foam so try to make sure the shape you’re attempting to get out of the broken board has enough space to allow for the lost foam.
      Good luck 🤙

    I like it but that board deserved some glass on fins instead of the plugs.

      100% agree glass ons are better. But this was an upcycle experiment. I used a couple of old plugs I had lying around 🤘

    do you use the same resin on the hot coat ? and why did you spray it if the resin had pigment in it

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  Рік тому

      No you use sanding resin. It’s just lam resin with a wax additive to make the resin sandable.
      Originally I wanted to see if the yellow paint would hide the scars but it didn’t so I put some pigment into the resin.

    I feel like we had a conversation about fin brands a few years ago.......... Done well mate. A lot of work but I'm sure it was fun.

      @@Shrednaught hahaha about time.. After Nick showing me the error of my ways.. :P I do feel futures lead the way with variety of fin choice, and even the box design.. having the flanges front and back do help with preventing that box sinking (like fcs2 are prone to do). But when they do go.. they make a mess.

      @@ZAGSurfboards yuh the fin choice is wayyy better. As is the customer service 🤣

    What kind of top coat do you apply at the end with a roll on and that gives such a cool looking matte finish? Is it Poly? Did you sand after that last top coat to get the matte finish?
    Cheers

      Clear acrylic sealer. I just give it a light buff with 360+ grit to take the dust grit out and give it a matte finish

    Hey thanks for sharing all your videos first of all. I have a board that needs a major repair and i want to strengthen. The board is not old but very light and fragile. It is already very thin so i think delaminating and reshapingis out of question but how do i fix all the little presure dents over the deck? Any thoughts?

      Thanks for watching. Without seeing the board it’s hard to answer but if it’s just heel dents on the deck of the board your best to just leave them and surf. Next board ask for a stronger glass job on the deck. 6/4 is a good start for a normal board
