Superbly filmed, acted written, produced , casted, an altogether most agreeable entertainment. Sometimes making me laugh out loud, sometimes bringing tears to my eyes. But I was always "in there".Thanks to you all.

My parents watched 'The Bill' religiously every Saturday night on the ABC here in Australia during the 80's & 90's - my favourite was Burnside & his constant phrase 'You're NICKED Sunshine' Sad to hear about the actor who played 'Tosh' - I never really got into the show as a kid but with my parents watching it - it was a staple Saturday night viewing.

There are a couple more sad stories. Tragically, Colin Tarrant, who played Inspector Andrew Monroe, took his own life in 2012 after suffering serious depression. Chris Ellison who played DI/DCI Frank Burnside was last year diagnosed with Aphasia and has lost the power to communicate. Cast mate Mark Wingett, who played DC Jim Carver, has given Ellison and his wife much needed support.

Thanks for that update, Rob. While many guests artists benefited from being on The Bill, some of the regulars found it hard to find other work. Sad to hear about Chris but glad to know that Mark is a hero in real life.

It eas a good show I still remember when it first started how basic it was. Surely grew onto a even better series. I suppose management who male series don't.care less probably die to budgetary concerns or just ratings. I think the acting was fantastic. One thing it would be interesting overall how many people were involved per episode overall including the actors. It mist have been a huge list of overall people involved

Funny how these actors might have participated in something in 2020/21 that might have contributed to their conditions.
I'm sure it's not hard for everyone here to work it out.

1988 - 1993 was a great era. Both CID and uniform had great characters and the storylines were varied and gripping.

I came in relatively late (circa 2005) so my favourite characters were Sgt Dale Smith, DC Mickey Webb, DCI Jack Meadows and DC Zain Nadir (loved his redemption storyline) but when I went back and watched older storylines I enjoyed DS Don Beech and the exploits or PC Gabriel (David) Kent.

One of the things that made the Bill so successful was that it was made with the full support of the Metropolitan Police Service, all the uniforms and much of the equipment was actually real, supplied by the same suppliers. The Vehicles were the same ones the Met used. All the uniforms and equipment had to be secured when not in use and were purchased by the Met after the show ended to ensure they were kept out of the wrong hands. It would be interesting to see how recruitment for British Police forces compares now to when the Bill was on.
Another major star to appear was a 10yo Keira Knightly who was in the 1995 episode "Swan Song"

My favourite characters were Polly, Reg, Tony, Norika, Smithy and Cass Rickman. Of the CID mob, Burnside, Meadows and Duncan Lennox. I also loved Jim Carver as a PC and DC. I don't know who in "ITV management" he p***ed off, but I'll never forgive them for sticking him back in uniform and then turning him into a hopeless drunk. Just one of the many ridiculous storylines that began the decline of a wonderful police procedural. It was great while it lasted though.

    • @Harldin
      @Harldin 6 місяців тому

Putting Jim Carver back in Uniform was consistent with UK Police policy at the time, all CID officers who had not been promoted in the last 10 years and posted to the same station had to return to uniform, it was a controversial rule called tenure, Alistair Greig suffered the same fate but was written out of the show. Carvers whole storyline coincided with the move to the Soap era and was atrocious from then on, his whole marriage to June was a totally unconvincing heap of garbage. They were never particularly close friends then all of a sudden in love.

Too many favourite characters to mention, particularly from the 88-93 era.. However, Tosh, Burnside, June and Reg spring to mind. Loads of great storylines too. The one that stands out is in series 6. June Ackland goes to the assistance of a woman who is worried about her husbands whereabouts while C.I.D are doing an "Obbo" hoping to catch a man who is attacking women in Sun Hill. It was scary stuff back then and when I watched it again recently after nearly 30 years I thought it was scary now. Great storylines, cracking dialogue and fine performances is how I describe "The Bill".

When paul Marquess, took over and put his poison pen to the programme ,thats when it went downhill ,Kevin lloyd (Tosh Lines) was still affected by the death of his brother (Terry Lloyd) who was a reporter and was killed by the US Army ,the reporting team were caught in the middle of a skirmish in Basra. His sone Stephen Lloyd would later play PC Steve Hunter.

I am American and when I found The Bill on UA-cam I began watching the show. I really liked the years up until when the character played by Carolyn Catz got raped by the character played by Michael Higgs then it started to lose it after that. The "creative" minds that took over The Bill seemed to try and make the show "too American", an example of the show going down hill was when the show replaced most of CID except for Jack Meadows character and brought in no talent young actors. I got bored with series 19 and I have not watched it after that. I want to get to the end, but wading through the muck of the later series doesn't interest me too much.

I just watched this and it's so sad and heartbreaking to hear what happened to Kevin Lloyd who played Tosh. I had no idea he had a drinking problem and that he passed away until today.
I used to watch The Bill as a kid and my favourite character would have to be Mick and when I first saw him, I actually thought he was a criminal but I later realised years later that he's a police officer.
My favourite moment was the football hooligan episode in 2001.
Also some cast members like Todd Carty who played Gabriel and Renè Zagger who played Nick Klein have appeared in a high school series in the UK called Grange Hill which you can cover if you like.
