Quite sure most of those were suspensions from fights and over aggressiveness. I never remembered him being on the injury list or serious injury. He even showed up to games with black eyes or bruises from previous fights in games. Tough goon no doubt. Add Rick Mahorn and Dennis Rodman, that was a tuff team. Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars was the best guard duo of all time IMO. Both Hall of Famers. My Dad says that the best guard duo is Walt Frazier and Pearl Monroe. My dad's old, but those two are Hall of Famers also so he's credible.

I totally agree People forget that Laimbeer, controversial as you wish, has been the first big to play basically only face to the basket. He pioneered the center position. He was one hell of a winner. He scored either medium/long jumpers or layups after an assist from one of his terrific guards or an offensive rebound. No post game in his array. He used to hit 3's consistently and always had very good % in 2pt shooting. At the line he had one year over 90% and a career 82% if my memory is not failing. Daly used that skill to lure opposing bigs outside, and in a team that had speedy guards like Dumars and Isiah was a very effective strategy. You do not win back to back chips by mistake. He was actually a pioneer
Isiah has said Laimbeer is basically blackballed in the NBA re Coaching opportunities and TV work over the years because he never "sold out" on the pistons persona over the years or apologized. Bad Boy for life.

There are grown men in Michigan who were not old enough to watch Bill Laimbeer play that still revere him to this day. Current men in DC were just plain happy to see the Gilbert Arenas era end. They haven't mentioned him since. Arenas had as much relevance in basketball as he has as a podcaster, none.

Also, the disrespect to Ben Wallace...geez. Ben Wallace didn't win the defensive player of the year 4x because he was just a great off the ball defender. He was a great rebounder, he was a great on-the-ball defended, who was one of the few centers who you could switch to a guard as well. Not to mention he was a tremendous lob threat and offensive rebounder as well.
Ben Wallace was good, but he was not a Bad Boy. I remember watching the playoffs between the Wallace Pistons and D-Wade Heat. D Wade was driving to the hole with impunity. Not once did Big Ben knock Wade to the ground. Sheesh! Had Wade been playing against the Bad Boy Pistons, either Laimbeer or Rick Mahorn would have knocked him down hard, to teach him respect.

Every time I see some claim a player from 30 years ago couldn't play in today's game I ask why? Those guys weren't idiots. They learned to play a game within the existing rules using the skills they were strongest with. So the tactics in the modern game are different. You don't think these guys could adapt? Do you think the modern players would hold up very well defending the Show Time Lakers where Magic had the ball in the hands of his shooter in a second and an half of when he got the rebound? On a non basketball note. Years after he retired. My father in law worked on Laimbeer’s chainsaw a couple times. Said he was a really nice guy. Took time for small talk and treated him well.

I have nothing but love for Laimbeer. He was the antihero for the Pistons and the league. He couldn’t jump but he lead the league in rebounds. He couldn’t run but he was always ready for the give and go. He wasn’t the greatest post player but he shot the 3 ball better than any other center at the time. He was slow but he was a top defensive player. Laimbeer got the job done. He protected his team, kept team disagreements in the locker room or at practice, and never second-guessed his loyalty to the Pistons, the NBA, and the fans. Love you, big guy.
He was like Draymond Green + Kevin Love well before them, but imo he gave far more to basketball than he needed to, he could have just have had some fun in basketball then retire early, and follow his family business and make more money. It was the rules back then and he was willing to test grey areas for the team. He was decent scorer, amazing 3 point shooter for his time, and amazing free throw shooter for a C/FC for his time, and most importantly, he was willing to do whatever it takes for his team to win, that being 3rd or 4th option and/or kneeing, flailing arms, picking fights, demoralizing other teams, getting fouls and technicals, he just did all for the team, when he could have just quit anytime and went to go and make more money elsewhere. Most importantly, he knew what he was doing, he knew he was getting flak for it, and he didn't care as long as it was for his team.
He's nothing like Green. Laimbeer was a legit NBA C who simply couldn't play with his back to the basket at that level & didn't have the foot speed to turn and face-up ala the Admiral. As a result he took what long in the tooth post players used to do and spent a career knocking down shots from 17-20ft. Only a fool or attention whore like Gilbert Arenas would say he couldn't thrive in this era when in fact much of the style of play offensively the last decade is based off what the Pistons did in the '80's.

Laimbeer should be in the Hall of Fame. He was a good defender but a good offensive player. He was a great rebounder, he toughened MJ up. Plus players like Divac, Mutumbo, Kukoc, and Wallace are in the Hall he should be as well.

Many teams back then had a no layups rule during the playoffs when a player drove into the paint and it was enter at your own risk. Chances are you were getting put on your ass and earning it at the line.

Bill laimbeer was a great player, and I appreciated his play and his demeanor... The Pistons run from 83 till 93 was one of the most fulfilling sports eras of my lifetime... One thing also can not be denied all those division titles, conference titles, and the 2 championships.
Lambeer could definitely play today. His rebounding, intensity, and ability to pick and Pop make him viable today. The league is extremely top heavy as far as talented bigs go.
He should absolutely be in the HOF. He was way more than a dirty player. He was an excellent rebounder, positional defender, great outlet passer and one of the few big men that could legit stretch the court.

Love Bill Laimbeer his game was strong but it gets exaggerated today by modern players especially , Yes he did dirty things and was a hard player but it wasn't like every single game he was hurting or fighting teams. He was a smart and strategic type player who followed direction well. Can shoot the ball was a good passer of the ball , shoot free throws and was a heck of a 3 point scorer. Today he'd be one of the top 5 players period . look at his scoring stats and imagine how easy it would be for him today with these baby like rules . Believe me he would adapt i can see him putting up 24-26 a night 12-15 rebounds , 4-6 assist , and shoot high % in 3pt , ft , fg %. Its just not as physical as it was during the 90's on back. Bill Laimbeer may be a lot of things but he was a solid team mate and a hell of a player, a centre shooting 3pointers in the 80s. His rebounding was definitely underrated.. 👍🏽🙏🏽
I’m not even sure if he teammates liked him that much. Laimbeer was the enforcer in the locker room too, he was gonna get in their face if he didn’t think they were playing to win. He’s an grade A A-Hole but he was all about winning so they put up with him. There’s a lot of stories about Bill getting into fist fights at Pistons practices.
To this day Bill Laimbeer is still my favorite player of all time. I started watching NBA as a little kid with the 1990 Portland - Detroit series and he was really cool with the mask. At that time I thought that the hard tackling was a part of the game.
He had a role and carried it out well. The man clearly had an impact because he is still being talked about today. He made it to the nba and hung around so he can't have been all bad
Maybe the ultimate "love to be his teammate, hate to play against him". There were basically 5 things he did really, really well: 1) rebound (from 1982-91, no player in the NBA got more defensive rebounds than Laimbeer) , 2) play tough D, 3) mid range to 3pt jumper was very good (Laimbeer didn't have any post-up game, so its a wonder his career field goal % is at 50%) , 4) be an ultimate teammate and ALWAYS had his teammates' back,...and 5) do whatever necessary to get under opponents skin! In the NHL, they are called "Rats" (eg. Marchand, Tkachuk, Tikkanen). Players who are borderline (or are) dirty, chippy... yet are very skilled. Bird was right though: Laimbeer sometimes tried to intentionally hurt other players, which is why no NBA team will ever hire him as their coach (even though he would be a good coach).

Gil doesn't understand how the NBA worked at the time. The hard fouls were part of the game and every team tried to have a player or two that would give hard fouls. The only thing was that those players always had to be ready to fight. The Pistons were special because they had 5 or 6 guys ready to do that work. The league had no issues with hard fouls until they saw that the Jordan Bulls couldn't handle it.
If you think Laimbeer was a bad basketball player, you either didn’t watch or you don’t know basketball. He was a solid stretch 4 for his entire career which included 4 all star appearances & 2 nba titles. He could shoot, had a soft touch around the rim, was great on the boards, and was at least not a liability on defense unlike many hall of famers… he was also an a-hole who took cheap shots. It’s not either or. He was both a good NBA player and an a-hole. The reason other NBA players don’t like him is that he took cheap shots. The reason you don’t like him, is because he doesn’t give a shit.
I hated Bill Laimbeer and his goonish game, but the guy could play. He had a consistent jumper out to 17 feet or so, was a premier rebounder and not a bad passer. He would be in high demand in today's game.

Bill was my neighbor in Palos Verdes Estates. I was much younger than he was, but I remember he allowed a little squirt like me to come over and shoot baskets with him. My Dad and I would go to the high school games and watch him play. He was pretty darn good even then!!!

Laimbeer was shooting threes before big men even thought about going out to the arc. He was a terrific rebounder, sound defender and big time glue guy. These 'Legends', many of who didn't win a darn thing, don't know much.
Manute Bol was shooting those 3's too. They kept him out on the perimeter because he was so skinny, someone like Laimbeer would have broken him into 20 pieces.

Enrforcer? Yes. Physical era? Yes. But he was putting up numbers. At his peak 17pt, 15 reb while primarily set at top of key, passing and shooting 3s. He fits todays modern big as much as any 80s player.

Parish could have easily decided to square off with Laimbeer, but that's never been the Celtic way. The league was so rigged back then for the Celtics and Lakers that the refs didn't even call Parish for a foul or a technical. It was as if nothing happened and somehow Laimbeer just ended up on the ground with a bloody mouth. It was the best of times in the NBA, but the rigging was blatant for the entire 80s to save the league from folding after the 70s and turn it in to the mega empire we have today.

If we had "prime" Bill Laimbeer in 2023, he would play very much like Draymond Green. Even with the ban on hand checking, a "prime" Laimbeer would have potentially caused trouble for someone like LeBron James, though I'm not sure if "prime" Laimbeer could have dealt with Nikola Jokić or Giannis Antetokounmpo because of these two players' ability to hit three-point shots.
Bill Laimbeer played basketball like it was hockey. He was an agitator, a rat, a sh*t disturber, etc. The difference is he wasn't afraid to throw down. He was the type of player you hated to play against but if he was on your team, you'd love him.

Bill was a great rebounder and very underrated shooter. One of the best 7 footers to shoot from 3 point land, He also got into opponents heads- most famously in the 1990 Finals with Kevin Duckworth. He could have easily been the MVP of the Finals and was under consideration- but publicly said it was Isiah's. Quite sure most of those were suspensions from fights and over aggressiveness. I never remembered him being on the injury list or serious injury. He even showed up to games with black eyes or bruises from previous fights in games. Tough goon no doubt. Add Rick Mahorn and Dennis Rodman, that was a tuff team. Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars was the best guard duo of all time IMO. Both Hall of Famers. My Dad says that the best guard duo is Walt Frazier and Pearl Monroe. My dad's old, but those two are Hall of Famers also so he's credible.

People forget that Laimbeer, controversial as you wish, has been the first big to play basically only face to the basket. He pioneered the center position. He was one hell of a winner.
He scored either medium/long jumpers or layups after an assist from one of his terrific guards or an offensive rebound. No post game in his array.
He used to hit 3's consistently and always had very good % in 2pt shooting. At the line he had one year over 90% and a career 82% if my memory is not failing.
Daly used that skill to lure opposing bigs outside, and in a team that had speedy guards like Dumars and Isiah was a very effective strategy.
You do not win back to back chips by mistake.
He was actually a pioneer
Isiah has said Laimbeer is basically blackballed in the NBA re Coaching opportunities and TV work over the years because he never "sold out" on the pistons persona over the years or apologized. Bad Boy for life.

They learned to play a game within the existing rules using the skills they were strongest with. So the tactics in the modern game are different. You don't think these guys could adapt? Do you think the modern players would hold up very well defending the Show Time Lakers where Magic had the ball in the hands of his shooter in a second and an half of when he got the rebound? On a non basketball note. Years after he retired. My father in law worked on Laimbeer’s chainsaw a couple times. Said he was a really nice guy. Took time for small talk and treated him well.

I have nothing but love for Laimbeer. He was the antihero for the Pistons and the league. He couldn’t jump but he lead the league in rebounds. He couldn’t run but he was always ready for the give and go. He wasn’t the greatest post player but he shot the 3 ball better than any other center at the time. He was slow but he was a top defensive player. Laimbeer got the job done. He protected his team, kept team disagreements in the locker room or at practice, and never second-guessed his loyalty to the Pistons, the NBA, and the fans. Love you, big guy.
He was like Draymond Green + Kevin Love well before them, but imo he gave far more to basketball than he needed to, he could have just have had some fun in basketball then retire early, and follow his family business and make more money. It was the rules back then and he was willing to test grey areas for the team. He was decent scorer, amazing 3 point shooter for his time, and amazing free throw shooter for a C/FC for his time, and most importantly, he was willing to do whatever it takes for his team to win, that being 3rd or 4th option and/or kneeing, flailing arms, picking fights, demoralizing other teams, getting fouls and technicals, he just did all for the team, when he could have just quit anytime and went to go and make more money elsewhere. Most importantly, he knew what he was doing, he knew he was getting flak for it, and he didn't care as long as it was for his team.
He was a way better shooter then those guys.

He's nothing like Green. Laimbeer was a legit NBA C who simply couldn't play with his back to the basket at that level & didn't have the foot speed to turn and face-up ala the Admiral. As a result he took what long in the tooth post players used to do and spent a career knocking down shots from 17-20ft. Only a fool or attention whore like Gilbert Arenas would say he couldn't thrive in this era when in fact much of the style of play offensively the last decade is based off what the Pistons did in the '80's.

I slowly became a Bill Laimbeer supporter. Hated when he terrorized my Sixers, but I get it. Back then it was more physical, thuggish street ball. Someone has to protect your star. Every team needed a Laimbeer/Enforcer.

Lambeer could definitely play today. His rebounding, intensity, and ability to pick and Pop make him viable today. The league is extremely top heavy as far as talented bigs go.
He should absolutely be in the HOF. He was way more than a dirty player. He was an excellent rebounder, positional defender, great outlet passer and one of the few big men that could legit stretch the court.

his game was strong but it gets exaggerated today by modern players especially , Yes he did dirty things and was a hard player but it wasn't like every single game he was hurting or fighting teams. He was a smart and strategic type player who followed direction well. Can shoot the ball was a good passer of the ball , shoot free throws and was a heck of a 3 point scorer. Today he'd be one of the top 5 players period . look at his scoring stats and imagine how easy it would be for him today with these baby like rules . Believe me he would adapt i can see him putting up 24-26 a night 12-15 rebounds , 4-6 assist , and shoot high % in 3pt , ft , fg %. Its just not as physical as it was during the 90's on back. I’m not even sure if he teammates liked him that much. Laimbeer was the enforcer in the locker room too, he was gonna get in their face if he didn’t think they were playing to win. He’s an grade A A-Hole but he was all about winning so they put up with him. There’s a lot of stories about Bill getting into fist fights at Pistons practices.
To this day Bill Laimbeer is still my favorite player of all time. I started watching NBA as a little kid with the 1990 Portland - Detroit series and he was really cool with the mask. At that time I thought that the hard tackling was a part of the game.

Maybe the ultimate "love to be his teammate, hate to play against him". There were basically 5 things he did really, really well: 1) rebound (from 1982-91, no player in the NBA got more defensive rebounds than Laimbeer) , 2) play tough D, 3) mid range to 3pt jumper was very good (Laimbeer didn't have any post-up game, so its a wonder his career field goal % is at 50%) , 4) be an ultimate teammate and ALWAYS had his teammates' back,...and 5) do whatever necessary to get under opponents skin! In the NHL, they are called "Rats" (eg. Marchand, Tkachuk, Tikkanen). Players who are borderline (or are) dirty, chippy... yet are very skilled. Bird was right though: Laimbeer sometimes tried to intentionally hurt other players, which is why no NBA team will ever hire him as their coach (even though he would be a good coach).

Gil doesn't understand how the NBA worked at the time. The hard fouls were part of the game and every team tried to have a player or two that would give hard fouls. The only thing was that those players always had to be ready to fight. The Pistons were special because they had 5 or 6 guys ready to do that work. The league had no issues with hard fouls until they saw that the Jordan Bulls couldn't handle it.

If you think Laimbeer was a bad basketball player, you either didn’t watch or you don’t know basketball. He was a solid stretch 4 for his entire career which included 4 all star appearances & 2 nba titles. He could shoot, had a soft touch around the rim, was great on the boards, and was at least not a liability on defense unlike many hall of famers… he was also an a-hole who took cheap shots. It’s not either or. He was both a good NBA player and an a-hole. The reason other NBA players don’t like him is that he took cheap shots. The reason you don’t like him, is because he doesn’t give a shit.

I hated Bill Laimbeer and his goonish game, but the guy could play. He had a consistent jumper out to 17 feet or so, was a premier rebounder and not a bad passer. He would be in high demand in today's game.

Parish could have easily decided to square off with Laimbeer, but that's never been the Celtic way. The league was so rigged back then for the Celtics and Lakers that the refs didn't even call Parish for a foul or a technical. It was as if nothing happened and somehow Laimbeer just ended up on the ground with a bloody mouth. It was the best of times in the NBA, but the rigging was blatant for the entire 80s to save the league from folding after the 70s and turn it in to the mega empire we have today.

If we had "prime" Bill Laimbeer in 2023, he would play very much like Draymond Green. Even with the ban on hand checking, a "prime" Laimbeer would have potentially caused trouble for someone like LeBron James, though I'm not sure if "prime" Laimbeer could have dealt with Nikola Jokić or Giannis Antetokounmpo because of these two players' ability to hit three-point shots.

You know, all these Celtics greats like Bird, Parish or McHale have all the right in the world to utter their opinion on Lambs, to critize him, to call him dirty. Why? Because he moved the barriers, he invented the dirty aspect of the NBA game in these days. And the Celtics I am talking about here are some of the greatest players the game has ever seen. Same about Reggie Miller, same about Sir Charles. But, what the heck gives Gilbert Arena, a walking joke who has NEVER won ANYTHING the right to speak up there? Bill was a great rebounder and very underrated shooter. One of the best 7 footers to shoot from 3 point land, He also got into opponents heads- most famously in the 1990 Finals with Kevin Duckworth. He could have easily been the MVP of the Finals and was under consideration- but publicly said it was Isiah's. The pistons would not have won back to back without him- and could have easily won 4 straight
