Quite sure most of those were suspensions from fights and over aggressiveness. I never remembered him being on the injury list or serious injury. He even showed up to games with black eyes or bruises from previous fights in games. Tough goon no doubt. Add Rick Mahorn and Dennis Rodman, that was a tuff team. Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars was the best guard duo of all time IMO. Both Hall of Famers. My Dad says that the best guard duo is Walt Frazier and Pearl Monroe. My dad's old, but those two are Hall of Famers also so he's credible.

As a Bulls fan, I was not a Laimbeer fan, but he fit the era of physical play. He was an enforcer, which helped the pistons win back to back titles.

If you make it to the pros you got game. If you were on the starting five of an 80s contender than you have serious game. Dude could play and he played against the greats. It may not have been pretty, but Laimbeer could play.

Did you hate Rodman?
He was a stretch 4, hit 16-17 footers consistently. Protected his star player Isiah (which is very much needed on that team). Could not jump but lead the league in rebounding a couple years. A role player that is and was needed for a championship run.
Didn't protect him from Karl Malone.
@@MU_STL_FAN1 nah. That dirty stuff was just to get in people's head. The comparison of Laimbeer to Love is a good one. Both guys were limited physically in their prime, yet they were good at getting proper positioning on the floor on both ends. Both were good rebounders because of positioning, ball tracking, and timing. All of the big time rebounders back in the day had their elbows going, so that stuff cancelled out. If Oakley and Ewing and Laimbeer and Mahorn elbowed each other for 40 minutes, all four of them each would finish with 12 rebounds and 12 fresh bruises. Laimbeer didn't have to try to hurt people to get those stats. He tried to hurt people to get in their head and possibly get them to miss a game in a playoff series. And it worked.

There's a cost to playing a dirty brand of win at all cost basketball. If you doubt that, think of how the entire Pistons team from that era is viewed. They are loathed by anyone who's not a Pistons fan. That's why Isiah didn't play on the Dream Team and also who he's on this public relations tour 30 years later. Because people view them in a different way.

Isiah has said Laimbeer is basically blackballed in the NBA re Coaching opportunities and TV work over the years because he never "sold out" on the pistons persona over the years or apologized. Bad Boy for life.

And of course, he's been getting some unfair treatment because of his "bad boy" past. The only ones who might actually give him a shot would be Detroit, but they're just not giving him that opportunity, so yes is basically blackballed in the NBA.

There are grown men in Michigan who were not old enough to watch Bill Laimbeer play that still revere him to this day. Current men in DC were just plain happy to see the Gilbert Arenas era end. They haven't mentioned him since. Arenas had as much relevance in basketball as he has as a podcaster, none.

He was an enforcer for the Pistons of the bad boy era. He was a dirty player, but not the only one. There were a lot of guys that would hammer people on layups and dunk attempts back then. Where do people think "earning them from the line" came from?

Many teams back then had a no layups rule during the playoffs when a player drove into the paint and it was enter at your own risk. Chances are you were getting put on your ass and earning it at the line.

All that you said over there, does not have anything to do with being dirty. You can be good enough to make the league, even win rings, still play dirty by attempting to hurt others. One does not negate the other.
Not just Laimbeer. Every single team had at least one "enforcer". Players policed themselves back then. Dirty plays were part of it for EVERY team. Most of Laimbeer's "dirty plays" were actually retaliating. When Pistons got hot they'd, try to injure ours. So we gotta take one of theirs..

Offensive players can now travel, carry, stepback, hopstep, eurostep, palm, etc. Defensive player can't breathe on the offensive player. So lets be clear about that too Gil

@@localwear1 They aren't. The have access to better things but that doesn't mean everyone is out here on a Kobe/Bron diet-routine. Most eat like shit, don't stay healthy and see basketball as a route to a personal brand. Its also easy to look faster and more athletic when you don't have to follow dribbling rules and can take 3 steps instead of 2 and a bunch of rule changes.
Gilbert is up there with Shaq and Chuck for worst takes in basketball.

Also, the disrespect to Ben Wallace...geez. Ben Wallace didn't win the defensive player of the year 4x because he was just a great off the ball defender. He was a great rebounder, he was a great on-the-ball defended, who was one of the few centers who you could switch to a guard as well. Not to mention he was a tremendous lob threat and offensive rebounder as well.

Ben Wallace was good, but he was not a Bad Boy. I remember watching the playoffs between the Wallace Pistons and D-Wade Heat. D Wade was driving to the hole with impunity. Not once did Big Ben knock Wade to the ground. Sheesh! Had Wade been playing against the Bad Boy Pistons, either Laimbeer or Rick Mahorn would have knocked him down hard, to teach him respect.

He was like Draymond Green + Kevin Love well before them, but imo he gave far more to basketball than he needed to, he could have just have had some fun in basketball then retire early, and follow his family business and make more money. It was the rules back then and he was willing to test grey areas for the team. He was decent scorer, amazing 3 point shooter for his time, and amazing free throw shooter for a C/FC for his time, and most importantly, he was willing to do whatever it takes for his team to win, that being 3rd or 4th option and/or kneeing, flailing arms, picking fights, demoralizing other teams, getting fouls and technicals, he just did all for the team, when he could have just quit anytime and went to go and make more money elsewhere. Most importantly, he knew what he was doing, he knew he was getting flak for it, and he didn't care as long as it was for his team.
He was a way better shooter then those guys.

He's nothing like Green. Laimbeer was a legit NBA C who simply couldn't play with his back to the basket at that level & didn't have the foot speed to turn and face-up ala the Admiral. As a result he took what long in the tooth post players used to do and spent a career knocking down shots from 17-20ft. Only a fool or attention whore like Gilbert Arenas would say he couldn't thrive in this era when in fact much of the style of play offensively the last decade is based off what the Pistons did in the '80's.
As a Bulls fan, I can't believe I have to defend laimbeer and his piston's teammates, but he could hit the big shot when they needed it! To beat the 80's Lakers, Celtics, Sixers and Bulls and win Championships would've been near impossible! Detroit won 2 back to back along with a lot of regular season games! Arenas never won anything and nobody values his opinion! Give the Pistons their due! Of course Laimbeer could thrive today!

Every time I see some claim a player from 30 years ago couldn't play in today's game I ask why? Those guys weren't idiots. They learned to play a game within the existing rules using the skills they were strongest with. So the tactics in the modern game are different. You don't think these guys could adapt? Do you think the modern players would hold up very well defending the Show Time Lakers where Magic had the ball in the hands of his shooter in a second and an half of when he got the rebound? The best of every era could play in every era. Great players are great players. They would just learn to play a very different type of game. I would have liked to see Dramond Greene on the 1989 Pistons. No one would be talking about Lambier if Dramond was allowed to play like they did in the 1980's.
The more I hear Gilbert Arenas talking smack about the old schools players, the more I lose more respect for him. No matter if you love or hate Bill Laimbeer, I’m 100% sure that he’ll survive playing in today’s pussified NBA, also he can shoot as a stretch Center/PF.

Lambeer could definitely play today. His rebounding, intensity, and ability to pick and Pop make him viable today. The league is extremely top heavy as far as talented bigs go.

Laimbeer should be in the Hall of Fame. He was a good defender but a good offensive player. He was a great rebounder, he toughened MJ up. Plus players like Divac, Mutumbo, Kukoc, and Wallace are in the Hall he should be as well.

I slowly became a Bill Laimbeer supporter. Hated when he terrorized my Sixers, but I get it. Back then it was more physical, thuggish street ball. Someone has to protect your star. Every team needed a Laimbeer/Enforcer.

On a non basketball note. Years after he retired. My father in law worked on Laimbeer’s chainsaw a couple times. Said he was a really nice guy. Took time for small talk and treated him well.

Gilbert is right bill lambier is not a great defensive player, Bill playing today's game he won't last through out the whole game. Today's one of bill lambier fouls in today's game would be a flagrant foul or can be ejected out of the game.
I have nothing but love for Laimbeer. He was the antihero for the Pistons and the league. He couldn’t jump but he lead the league in rebounds. He couldn’t run but he was always ready for the give and go. He wasn’t the greatest post player but he shot the 3 ball better than any other center at the time. He was slow but he was a top defensive player. Laimbeer got the job done. He protected his team, kept team disagreements in the locker room or at practice, and never second-guessed his loyalty to the Pistons, the NBA, and the fans. Love you, big guy.
To this day Bill Laimbeer is still my favorite player of all time. I started watching NBA as a little kid with the 1990 Portland - Detroit series and he was really cool with the mask. At that time I thought that the hard tackling was a part of the game.

He should absolutely be in the HOF. He was way more than a dirty player. He was an excellent rebounder, positional defender, great outlet passer and one of the few big men that could legit stretch the court.
Laimbeer was shooting threes before big men even thought about going out to the arc. He was a terrific rebounder, sound defender and big time glue guy. These 'Legends', many of who didn't win a darn thing, don't know much.
Manute Bol was shooting those 3's too. They kept him out on the perimeter because he was so skinny, someone like Laimbeer would have broken him into 20 pieces.
Bill Laimbeer may be a lot of things but he was a solid team mate and a hell of a player, a centre shooting 3pointers in the 80s. His rebounding was definitely underrated.. 👍🏽🙏🏽
I’m not even sure if he teammates liked him that much. Laimbeer was the enforcer in the locker room too, he was gonna get in their face if he didn’t think they were playing to win. He’s an grade A A-Hole but he was all about winning so they put up with him. There’s a lot of stories about Bill getting into fist fights at Pistons practices.
For those who think Laimbeer couldn't play are mistaken. He was definitely a thug but hit that outside jumper way too many times for my liking. Go Lakers!
As a 15 yr old inner city kid seeing Laimbeer get booed in a playoff game. And him gesturing to the crowd to boo more. He didn't give a f*%#! I loved it!
Enrforcer? Yes. Physical era? Yes.
But he was putting up numbers. At his peak 17pt, 15 reb while primarily set at top of key, passing and shooting 3s. He fits todays modern big as much as any 80s player.

his game was strong but it gets exaggerated today by modern players especially , Yes he did dirty things and was a hard player but it wasn't like every single game he was hurting or fighting teams. He was a smart and strategic type player who followed direction well. Can shoot the ball was a good passer of the ball , shoot free throws and was a heck of a 3 point scorer. Today he'd be one of the top 5 players period . look at his scoring stats and imagine how easy it would be for him today with these baby like rules . Believe me he would adapt i can see him putting up 24-26 a night 12-15 rebounds , 4-6 assist , and shoot high % in 3pt , ft , fg %. Its just not as physical as it was during the 90's on back. I hated Bill Laimbeer and his goonish game, but the guy could play. He had a consistent jumper out to 17 feet or so, was a premier rebounder and not a bad passer. He would be in high demand in today's game.
Maybe the ultimate "love to be his teammate, hate to play against him". There were basically 5 things he did really, really well: 1) rebound (from 1982-91, no player in the NBA got more defensive rebounds than Laimbeer) , 2) play tough D, 3) mid range to 3pt jumper was very good (Laimbeer didn't have any post-up game, so its a wonder his career field goal % is at 50%) , 4) be an ultimate teammate and ALWAYS had his teammates' back,...and 5) do whatever necessary to get under opponents skin! In the NHL, they are called "Rats" (eg. Marchand, Tkachuk, Tikkanen). Players who are borderline (or are) dirty, chippy... yet are very skilled. Bird was right though: Laimbeer sometimes tried to intentionally hurt other players, which is why no NBA team will ever hire him as their coach (even though he would be a good coach).

Bill Laimbeer for his career averaged 13 points and 10 boards. At his peak he was like a 11-13 boards per game guy for a handful of years there. Actually led the league in rebounding one year. 84 percent free throw shooter for a big. Could step out and hit the three for stretches in his career and was really ahead of his time there and showed ability to shoot a respectable percentage the years he attempted more than 1 per game.
People think of Laimbeer as a goon cause he made some bonehead enforcer plays, but it bothers me when people talk about him like that.

Bill was my neighbor in Palos Verdes Estates. I was much younger than he was, but I remember he allowed a little squirt like me to come over and shoot baskets with him. My Dad and I would go to the high school games and watch him play. He was pretty darn good even then!!!

I’ve watched Laimbeer pretty much his entire career, living in Cleveland and being a lifelong Cavs fan means I was able to see Laimbeer in person many times during his days as a Cavs player, if you look at today’s big men who always are shooting from outside, they are simply doing what Laimbeer was doing back in the day, Laimbeer became a role player when he got to Detroit and he played his role well, he might not have been a great player but to be able to last as long as he did in the league and be as durable as he was, love him or hate him you have to give him a thumbs up 👍🏾

@@michaelj.9886 That's not what happened during that play. It was during a rebound, and Parish hit him when Laimbeer had his back to him. It was a clear sucker punch. Parish could have easily decided to square off with Laimbeer, but that's never been the Celtic way. The league was so rigged back then for the Celtics and Lakers that the refs didn't even call Parish for a foul or a technical. It was as if nothing happened and somehow Laimbeer just ended up on the ground with a bloody mouth. It was the best of times in the NBA, but the rigging was blatant for the entire 80s to save the league from folding after the 70s and turn it in to the mega empire we have today.

Growing up watching laimbeer play, I thought he was very unathletic and wondered why he was even out there beyond his jumper. In the old days of illegal defense, it work bringing the 4 or 5 man away from the basket, which he excelled at. Other than that, he was slow defensively and relied on physical, dirty fouls because he couldn't guard

You know, all these Celtics greats like Bird, Parish or McHale have all the right in the world to utter their opinion on Lambs, to critize him, to call him dirty. Why? Because he moved the barriers, he invented the dirty aspect of the NBA game in these days. And the Celtics I am talking about here are some of the greatest players the game has ever seen. Same about Reggie Miller, same about Sir Charles. But, what the heck gives Gilbert Arena, a walking joke who has NEVER won ANYTHING the right to speak up there? Even Bird shows more respect for Laimbeer than Arenas. And although the Celtics hated him as much as you can possibly hate an opponent, there still was some respect for what he could do to them apart from playing dirty. The "Bad Boys" were my childhood heros and will ever be. Lambieer was the pro to type stretch big before they’ve existed. He played physicsl, agitated the hell out of teams player he was responsible for. If you didn’t hate him he felt he wasn’t doing his job successfully. I personally like bill he and Nate Thurman were two of my favorites. Also two winners who went every night.
What people always fail to mention about Laimbeer is that he genuinely loved mixing it up on the basketball court! He didn't have to play basketball because his father/family was one of the wealthiest in all of Ohio!! But he played anyway and had a decent career! Particularly for a guy who had very little physical gifts. Charles Barkley said it best: "I hated Bill Laimbeer, but I respected him! Because he did what had to be done in order to win championships!"

Bill was a great rebounder and very underrated shooter. One of the best 7 footers to shoot from 3 point land, He also got into opponents heads- most famously in the 1990 Finals with Kevin Duckworth. He could have easily been the MVP of the Finals and was under consideration- but publicly said it was Isiah's. The pistons would not have won back to back without him- and could have easily won 4 straight

Bill Laimbeer played basketball like it was hockey. He was an agitator, a rat, a sh*t disturber, etc. The difference is he wasn't afraid to throw down. He was the type of player you hated to play against but if he was on your team, you'd love him.
If you think Laimbeer was a bad basketball player, you either didn’t watch or you don’t know basketball. He was a solid stretch 4 for his entire career which included 4 all star appearances & 2 nba titles. He could shoot, had a soft touch around the rim, was great on the boards, and was at least not a liability on defense unlike many hall of famers… he was also an a-hole who took cheap shots. It’s not either or. He was both a good NBA player and an a-hole. The reason other NBA players don’t like him is that he took cheap shots. The reason you don’t like him, is because he doesn’t give a shit.

@adamludlow1977 Then, the rules of the game were changed in large part due to the overly physical style of play used by teams like the Pistons and Knicks. That's really Laimbeer's legacy. Yeah, he was on 2 championship teams, and we will never see that style of play rewarded again. The other part of Laimbeer's legacy is coaching in the WNBA. Imagine being so despised by a league you played in that no one will give you a shot despite seeming to be intelligent and understanding the game strategically.

@adamludlow1977 Jordan has some character issues but is generally regarded as the greatest to ever play. Isiah also has plenty of character issues, see his history of sexual harassment allegations. Karl Malone nearly killing Isiah on the court was the result of the Pistons style of play, and he would have borne the brunt of the backlash had it been allowed to continue. As it stands they're all nearly universally despised or forgotten with the exceptions of Rodman and Salley.
