The most honest how to video I've ever watched on UA-cam
Thanks for posting this. Someone apparently was in there before. In addition to the missing top right hinge screws, there are two lower hinge screws missing on the right and three missing on the lower left.
The main problem with these inspiron 15 7000 laptops is that the hinge pins are too tight and seize up and end up breaking the plastic mounting plate. The hinge pins need to be loosened slightly and lubricated or they will also break the replacement plate. When my wife's laptop hinge seized and broke the mounting plate, instead of replacing the whole top cover, I drilled two small holes lined up with the upper hinge screw holes, through the cover just below the glass, and fastened the hinge with two small machine screws and nuts which were tightened with some blue loctite. The machine screw heads need to be VERY thin. I ground them down as flat as I could and also shortened the shafts. They stick out the back a little but I did not need to remove the glass and risk breaking it or the antenna wires, although heating the glue with a hair dryer or heat gun would have helped. You just need to be careful not to leave any metal shavings after drilling. Here is a link to a UA-cam video that explains what I did:
ua-cam.com/video/5gmUwq9H9-A/v-deo.html
It doesn't look great but it works very well and it's very sturdy. The top opens easier now and it will never break again!
Bought the wife one of these and she's thoroughly enjoyed using it but noticed an almost identical issue to the one you describe here. That's a pretty weak design flaw. Really appreciate your video. Thanks again Michael.
Thank you so much for this video. I repaired mine following your video. Those screws with large head, very hard to find in Austin. I found some in discount electronics in Round Rock. They had some spare ones that they gave me at no cost to fix the laptop. bottom line Dell made the cheap design. Thanks again for loading the step by step guide.
Thank you very much! Followed this guide to repair my Inspiron 7579. Keep in mind that you need to slightly loosen an lubricate the hinges too or it will break again.
Wow! Mr. Michael The Computer Guy I cannot thank you enough!
Your video was the perfect combo of thoroughly detailed yet simple enough for a novice to follow along.
BIG TIME RECOMMEND TO THE FOOLEST OF FOOLS. E.g I stupidly forgot to plug in one of the display cables, and Mr. Michael is so thorough, I was able to find someone who commented an issue about getting a black screen, to which he replied that it would be due to the cables. Sure enough I popped the back out, plugged it in correctly, and Wah-lah! my laptop was back on! What would've been a $175 repair by Geek Squad, was a $ 34 home fix !!
excellent video, i received one of this laptops last week with the same problem, and yes that glue in the middle is really a pain in the ........ Thank your for the guide
Thank you very much for your work. Since I know where the glue was, I was able to open this up safely.
My Dell Inspiron 15 7579 2-in-1 also have the same issue and Dell denied service even though I had extended premium support warranty. This is clearly a quality issue on part of dell.
10/19/19 I just replaced hinges on a 15-7000 2 in 1 from 2019, the bottom edge of screen has a strip that pulls up with 2 screws that hold down the screen. The screen is held down by 3M COMMAND style tack strips, the pull tab sticks out and covers the center henge screws. You just carefully pull that tab on each side to release he screen adhesive a little heat and alcohol never hurts. the screen is pretty flexible but be careful... If you lift up from the bottom it has hinge like tabs along the top edge.
@@mnkelsner Thanks for the info. Mine is from 2016 and don't think the pull tab was there.
I just used this video to replace the back panel on my wife's laptop. Thank you so much for this.
Hello! question, did you have the same problem of the upper part not sticking together well?? or yours did fit perfectly? Oh and where did you buy the cover? Thanks!
As a fellow technician, I know firsthand that you are never "too cautious" while fixing dell laptops as they love to fuck with you putting glue where it won't affect the equipment but it will give you a shit lot of trouble to open those suns-o'bitchess.
Kudos to you man, I feel ya.
Thanks very much for this video. Followed it precisely to replace the back cover on an Inspiron 15 7579. It was perfect and so helpful!
can u send the link for the replacement plz
Hello! yours stuck okay? or you had the same problem that the one on the video, not coming together?
@@marcosgoyret9705 No problems with reassembly. Came back together just fine.
where did you buy the replacement back panel/lid from?
So I have a small IT shop as well. A client brought one of these in and I went through the repair. I took the laptop apart, ordered a new lid and screws that were missing, waited for the parts to come in and put the new top cover on. I got everything back together and put it into tablet mode and it broke again IMMEDIATELY. I called Dell since the laptop was not cheap and they refused to do anything. Having put out money for parts, now I'm up shit creek. Total nightmare scenario. Unfortunately, I thought that just the plastic pieces had failed so I didn't get new hinges. It's the hinges that are the problem, or at least a big part of the problem. For whatever reason they tighten up over time. It was at this point I decided to take the hinges apart. There's a tiny screw on the end in the middle of the hinge...it's a tiny Phillips. Once you remove that you can slide the hinge cover off. Now you can see two nuts that control the hinge tightness. These are kept from falling out by a piece of metal held on with two C clips. You don't need to take the C clips off. Just loosen the nuts till they're tight against the metal held on by the C clips. This along with putting a couple drops of new motor oil in the gears loosens up the hinge dramatically. If you don't buy brand new hinges, or loosen up the old ones, you'll have the same problem right away. I'm going to Autozone tomorrow to get some epoxy to attach the threaded inserts that came out of the top cover. As loose as the hinges are now, hopefully the epoxy will work.
Great comment. The hinges on mine were super tight. Loosened them up and waiting for my replacement back panel to fix my laptop
Good job Michael Cooper. Well done.
thanks so much for posting! and FOR REAL: WHY DO THEY USE ALL THE DAM GLUE! FOR FREAKIN REAL! I have a 15 5000 touch screen and this/your video was the closest I could find. The laptop design is exactly the same as my 15 5000. A thousand thank you's and keep sharing and teaching us! We appreciate all the vids and everything you do!
Great video! Many thanks! My laptop is the non-touch screen version. The attachment on the left hitch suddenly broke. I noticed that the hitches were too stiff and that could be the reason why the attachments give up and break with time. Instead of buying a new back cover, I used Gorilla Epoxy to attach the hitches back on the back cover. I also loosened the hitches a bit.
I have a feeling that this is a common problem with this laptop, as the same thing has happened with mine in the exact same spot. Thank you for the vid, helps a lot since i use a screen cover for art that I don't wanna go through re-applying to a new screen.
It is very common
This happened to my husbands laptop - right side hinge broken. After watching your video, I think I'll just wait until it falls apart and buy him a new laptop - most likely not Dell.
Haha, same. I stuck a binder clip on the bottom right. It keeps it together and the hinge swings fine for now. Backed up everything just in case.
I always put couple of drops of Spirit (not much just a few drop) to take apart the screen from the frame and it works pretty good..
I was looking for replacing of the Dell Screen cable that made like the screen that you worked with, I barely could find your video, Thanks man for your clear explanation. However, Some screens need for glue to stick it after you replace the cable because it does not return back like what was before opening.
Thanks so much for the video. We had the same issue with ours.
I'm have a small IT shop. I totally get the stress when dealing with the glue. I just had to pay for a screen replacement myself due to my breaking it while trying to repair it. $205 out of my pocket. Hate that junk.
Same here, broke the screen of a Lenovo AIO 520 - no glue but borderless design, screen cost was 166€. On that particular Lenovo, I'd say there a 50% chance to break the screen. Even installing the new screen was complicated and stressful.
I may try to lubricate the hinges and run small bolts through the outer shell like I saw in another video. Seems to be a bit more cost effective since the laptop is pretty old. Your video and comments were nevertheless very straight forward. Thanks!
Thank you, you have been a great help.
So the exact same thing happened to my Dell. Apparently the glue was old enough on mine that the screen and lid just popped apart. My solution, after seeing what was involved in replacing the lid, was to buy longer hinge screws, drilling holes through the lid, and putting nuts and washers on the outside of the case. I tried JB Weld to try to glue the inserts back into the frame but that didn't work. The new fix is much stronger than the original design, but I can no longer fold the screen around and utilize the 2:1 tablet feature. I never used my laptop as a tablet anyway , so it's okay that I can't now. About 4 months after I did the first hinge, the second hinge broke. I already had the parts, so now I have six nuts and washers displayed on the top of the lid. I ended up having to order the screws from Taiwan as no one had tiny screws with heads flat enough to fit inside the hinge. When this first happened I read around the web and found that other people had the same issue. It is a design flaw as the inserts are very small and mounted in plastic.
did exactly the same
Thank you I just repaired my screen
Thanks, very thanks man!!!
Just found my dell touchscreen with same problem...wish I could ship mine to you to repair..you seem fair
you have alot of patients bro i wasn't doing all that
Thank you so much! We have exactly the same problem. I would like to show Dell what a bad design they do. Maybe they will try to fix it. My broke a week after the warranty expired.
My computer just popped open and spat out two screws. Exact same thing on the right side. However, after watching this, I stuck a binder clip on it lol Works great :P
Yes it does
Good job
Thanks for video..will be fixing mine. Hint. To separate glue without stressing glass, use dental floss with gentle sawing motion to slide between the two fragile surfaces...great way to separate mounting tape/glue.
Okay. I might try that.
Heat gun. G 2 part epoxy. Client happy. Thanks for showing where the glue was. lol
I have exact same laptop, and after 5 years use its exact place cracking out. It seems to be some design issue that same place gives the problem.
good brother
Thanks so much I could not have done this by myself
Hi there do you have a link where I can buy the part?
I also wanted to have the link
I can only find silver replacement parts. I've got the "black series," anyone know the part no. for the dark/gunmetal back lid (or entire screen assembly)?
can you do a disassembly for a 7558 touch screen?
I'm replacing a latitude 3310 2 in 1 with a similar touch assembly. Running into the same issue with the screen not fully being able to latch on the top part. Were you ever able to get it to attach, anything you recommend doing? Would buying a new top cover help?
13:33 LOL I'm working on a similar model dell right now going on the EXACT same tyrade. These glued up things are 10x as stressful and an iphone or samsung repair of any kind I swear...
is it possible to use the same case on the inspiron 7580?
The REAL cause of the hinge issue is inside the hinge itself. I just completed the lid replacement, but the hinges were so stiff, I could tell it would over-stress and cause breakage issues again.
My son found a comment somewhere on line stating there was a design flaw in the hinge (posted as if it is an intentional "planned obsolescence" design conspiracy to sell more computers). Basically every time the hinge operates, a nut in the hinge assembly tightens slightly on a tension spring. With use it eventually tightens so much that it either locks up ot breaks case or screen as too much force is used to open.
I unscrewed & pulled off the oval sleeves ( note orientation of inner tab theas keeps cables properly positioned. I removed 2 tiny retaining rings and the oval end piece, then used a micro open end wrench to loosen the nut until the hinge moved comfortably.
Also took a few minutes to remove excess grit and clean the gears in the hinge assembly with an old toothbrush and added a tiny drop of silicone lubricant, fleng the hinge to distribute evenly and blotting any excess with paper towel.
Putting the metal oval sleeve back on took a bit of maneuvering to properly re-seat all the way in order to template inner screw that keeps assembly together.
A mini vice would have been helpful to apply even pressure.
Fairly easy solution instead of buying new hinge set at $30-$50. Hardest part was finding a small enough open end wrench in my husband's tools. (Smaller than 1/4", probably metric...I used an antique custom machined by my late father-in-law. )
Thanks for the instructions!
Note: if you adjust hinges, don't loosen too much or screen won't stay up as laptop!😊
is it possible to change top glass in screen, my screen glass only broken but still touch and scree seem to be working fine, is it possible to change the glass alone
Thanks for this Video, Could you please make a video for Laptop Dell Inspiron 7586 (2 in 1)?
I would need one of that model to make that happen.
Hi Michael, thanks for this video really helpful 👍. I have a similar problem with my laptop but my own case is the touch screen still works and intact but the screen is/has leaked leaving a very nasty uneven coloration on my screen i can't do any work on it as a result. This is when you need an offset spatula to help separate the glue.
Yep, exact same problem here. What a shite design on the part of Dell. Thanks a million for providing this video, Dell wanted $60 just to diagnose the problem (despite it being a very, very, VERY well known problem)
Bro! my Dell 5558 laptop's screen is cracked but it does work really good but, its touch stopped working can I replace the glass of LCD or I have to buy a new LCD? answer please.

how many pins does this screen have?
so i broke my screen but my laptop functioning fine. I bought a portable screen instead because replacing the broken one is way too expensive for me. the only issue is when i detached the broken screen out, the engine on the side are still hanging... i want to take them out but they are connected to the wifi little connector inside. i don't think i should take it out the way you did because i mmight not b e able to have wifi.. what do you suggest thank you for the help
What type of sale do you recommend me using for the top left corner coming apart? I need to seal that on my computer. Hot glue is not doing the job
You have to replace the broken parts. No glue will hold the hinges in place.
I just did the exact repair. Only removed the screen and hinge screws on the lid to do it easily. However the screen will blank out at full tablet fold over position. Cuts out about 1/2" before complete fold over, and comes back on when lifted. Not a wire issue, there is some kind of sensor for screen/lid position and I cannot find it.
Call parts-people.com and ask them
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy I found the sensor problem, there is a permanent magnet down near the left hinge under the brace rod. Remove the magnet and most of the screen mystery shutdown issues will go away. I have left this off for a month and no adverse effects in any mode.

Hello and thank you for the video, it's really instructive. I am trying to change the whole screen of my laptop, same problem with the right hinge, plus the screen has been having issues for a while now. Would you care to share where to find those parts? The lcd screen is relatively easy to find, but not the back. Thank you in advance!

Hi Michael. I have my touch screen broken in the upper right corner, but my dell inspiron works nice. Do I have to change the whole screen or just the glass only? Do they sell only the glass? or I have to buy the the whole piece?
That depends on the model. Most likely the Glass and Screen are combined.

I would need to see it. There's a place here in Austin that specialises in fixing Dell laptops. They're called parts people.
Hi sir appreciate your video but can you help me? Because my dell Inspiron 15 7000 I cannot use it's touch screen I downgrade my windows 10 to 8 and download bios and touch from dell website but still not working
LCD Leaking very sticky liquid.
I have a 5-year-old Inspiron 15-5568 signature Edition the one with the useful touch screen.
Just recently, I have noticed a very sticky liquid leaking out of one corner of the screen. There are now bright and dark patches on the screen near where it is leaking. As well as round, the screen the sticky stuff gets onto the base of the laptop where I rest my hands to type. It is hard to clean off and I am worried it may be toxic.
Is this a common fault or is it a sign of a defect in the design and manufacture?
Is there anything that can be done to fix it? In dell community website, I have read many messages regarding this. Why don’t @dell recall these laptops and provide replacement to the customers.
If the computer is still under warranty they should fix it for free. If it's out of one t they can fix it for a fee or you can take it to a local place to be replaced for a fee. I've seen quite a few of these and based on the attention around the video and doing Google searches it happens a lot. There's a place called Parts People in North Austin who specialize in Dell laptops and their repair person said he sees a lot of these.
I have the 7606 model and can’t seem to find a screen replacement anywhere😩 Plz help! I’ve contacted a few companies and they said they don’t have it since it’s a newer model. Dell tried to charge me 800 for screen and keyboard repair!

Hi, do they have replacement screws here as well?
Does anybody know what is the function of those aluminum parts at the bottom right and left corners, close to where he's holding the screen at 0:24?
I pressed the right corner and my screen stopped working. I'm investigating what would be the cause and have found this very aluminum part is damaged.
Those aluminum parts cover the hinges and that's where the display cable goes from the main part of the laptop up to the screen so most likely the display cable is damaged.

get a heat gun. glue, what glue?
One more time: Any time you encounter tape: HEAT GUN or HAIR DRYER!!!!
The heat definitely helps to melt the glue but if you get the screen too hot it will discolour
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy It's not glue, it's double stick tape, and that's why I use a hair dryer. Less likely to burn everything up. Bottom line is that it makes any form of sticky tape removal, from labels to LCD screens, easier.

definitely a dell issue.
that son of a b*tch glue...
it's obvious this guy has NOT done much work on laptops.
I had opened and fixed hundreds of laptops at this point. Your correction that its not glue its double sided tape is asinine. Glue is an adhesive and that is what is on double sided tape.
Invest in a heat gun maybe?
Too much heat can damage the screen which is what I was trying to avoid.
