corian countertops installed wrong

  • Corian countertops installed with seams, glued to plywood, wavy from improper clamping, out of level, and out of flush. This contractor posed the know how, and did not do his research. Now the homeowner is faced with a reinstall, or cover ups that will improve a little, but will never hide the mistakes.....

    The top isn't level because the cabinets aren't. You don't level the tops

      I have read a lot of the coments and I think you my friend are the only one that actually has the knowledge of corian, I have worked with solid surface materials for almost 20 years and I still love it.

    My god. The cowboy who did this has never installed ANY kind of countertop in his life! Let alone Corian! He should have worked FOR a ''countertop guy'' for at LEAST a couple of years first and learned his trade properly but that shouldn't be your problem! As a former tradesman when I see a sub do this kind of thing it really makes me mad. He probably told you he could do countertops and halfway through realized he was in way over his head. The video is smart and The material might be salvaged.

    "…cope it (backsplash) to these bows…"
    Absolutely not. You set the tops level and flat, set the splash, then drive shims under the Corian to the straight edge of the splash, then silicone.
    "Corian tops are glued directly to plywood."
    If you want to void the warranty they are. Strip underlayment or no underlayment only; MDF or plywood, no particleboard. All that plywood has to go.
    Even if completed, the seam at the inside corner will have no 5/8" minimum radius and will be out of warranty. That's why the sheets are made 30" wide, so you can offset the seam. Don't forget the seam support, 2" wide minimum and full length of the seam.
    You can't tell level with a tape measure. Starting at the high side, shim the level to level. Beginning again at the shim, level and shim again. Work your way around. This is the only way, without a laser or water level, to tell what the tops are doing. Level in an "X" in each section, in addition to front to back.
    Pull that sink and check the cutout. No tool marks, 1/16" radiused edges top and bottom, and sanded smooth.

    If this was my kitchen, I'm definitely taking the contractor to court.....let him eat the cost of the reinstall.

    Hire a friend of a mate because he gives a good price. An annoying but common cause of peoples misfortune when improving their home or hoping for improvement.

    It always makes me angry when ppl think they do not need training of any kind, they just happen to know everything.
    On the other hand customers, who go for the cheap deal, asking for no reference do not help either.
    The top can be fixed reasonably well, without replacing it. But it won't come cheap.
    If the fixing was my job (I am registered fabricator) I would probably charge pretty much the same amount for labour as making a new one incl. materials.

    this guy picking this apart does not know anything about installing solid surface don't let him fix this. Get a certified installer for this material. has even read the corian fabrication / installation manual.

    I would argue with that as corian and all other manufacturers have a range from 3 mm thickness to 12-15. Corian, Wilsonart, Hi-macs, Avonite and so on.
    Athough the installation process is pretty much the same on all of them, preparing, joining, gluing, polishing, therefore nice finish can be archived.
    This particular one was used as bare mdf or plywood, none of the steps required have been made. The installer was nothing but a cowboy, who never recieved installation training.

  • @JohnDoe-ld4fo

    Just a thing Corian is a name, owned by DuPont, so is Hi-macs owned by LG, and so on. They all very similar can be sorted in two groups acrilyc and pe.
    Inconceivable joints can be archived on all of them by using the right method.
    On this one gluing was not even performed, the pieces were cut and put next to each other.

    You should not put seam in corner of L-tops. It will crack. The inside corner should be radii-used and the seam at least inch and half from the inside corner. Back splash should be glued to the wall and silicone caulk applied at the joint. If gap in splash, the top can be shimmed tight before caulking (if the underlayment will allow it in this case). I glue one inch strips of underlayment at the front edge, back edge and two strips evenly spaced in the middle (no full underlayment needed).

    As I'm a few weeks away from approx 29 linear feet of corian installation...I should not watch a nightmare like this. Having chest pains now. Thanks for posting though...interesting.

    The cabinets look like they are from a resale store. Then the homeowner installed them crooked because he saw it done on a DIY TV show. And then found the cheapest "handiman" to install the top. This is the manifestation of a whole lot of things done wrong. Cutting corners does not save money.

    LOL, you don't superglue the back splash to the countertop. LOL To me this looks like prefabbed corian the contractor ordered. He didn't have any corian exp THAT is obvious. That whole job could be torn out and glued together using the RIGHT glue and reinstalled to perfection. Don't let the granite/quartz assholes sway you. Corian is awesome. I have installed all countertops from mica, corian, granite etc and corian is in my whole house. Can you heat granite and bend it LOL, umm no. Corian YES

    a lot of the problem with this job is due to the cabinets, for me it looks like this cabinets came out of a foreclosure home and some how made to fit this kitchen thats why you see all that counter tops just hanging in air, i do over 30 cabinet jobs a month ,over 50 granite jobs a moth and about 10 dupont jobs a month, dont listen to this video

      @wags99999 5 років тому +1

      Out-gassing? What a moron...do you have a clue what Corian is made from? Are you aware solid surface (the category Corian is in) is used widely in Hospitals etc?

    This sounds like a general contractor was hired for this home and then subcontracted out the counter tops to someone cheaper than him in order to make money for basically the risk and not the labor. And now he is paying for it...sort of. You don't hide the bows by coping the back-splash! I would be pissed as hell if you did that in my home. I would most likely have you redo it or sue you. Hiding the mistakes is just as dishonest as the person that said he could install it in the 1st place. There is no "at a minimum" repair to this. Rip it out!

    That is a horrid install job. Our Corian’s 15 y/o & it looks as good today as new. Of course it’s 2017 today, maybe the installers didn’t have a lot of experience in “Seamless Install”?

    Wow he didn't even seam any pieces together looks like he just glued everything down... Too bad I'm 22 and could have done a much better job, and also whatsup with the sink why wouldn't he do an undermount , obviously someone who doesn't know countertops. Too bad

    • @jjs777fzr
      @jjs777fzr 8 років тому

      +Chris Harvey The option to go with an undermount or drop in sink is optional. I'm having 102sq/ft of corian installed and I'm going with a drop in granite composite sink. Years down the road...I'll be able to swap out the sink easily whereas undermount is a bit more tedious. Would have loved to go with an integral corian sink but they are prone to spider cracks from thermal shock when dumping boiling hot water down the drain.
