  • Castlevania: The Adventure was the franchise's first appearance on a handheld console, making its debut in 1989 on the Game Boy. It was one the earliest games for Nintendo's history-making micro machine, and it kind of shows here.
The game is slow-paced, and controls are sluggish. It doesn't feature sub-weapons, the iconic staircases, and, with the exception of Dracula, most enemies are unique for this game. The music is wonderful though.
The game is available today as part of the Castlevania Anniversary Collection, and, although it isn't looked at with much fondness today, I found myself returning to this one more often than some of the other games in the collection. It's certainly challenging at first, but once you've memorised the levels and got the awkward jumping and whipping down, it's actually quite fun.
Some save states were used for this video to avoid showing too much repetition following mistakes and deaths. Not too many! I'm actually not too bad at this game! Kind of got a bit annoyed that I lost a life just as I thought I'd defeated Dracula towards the end, but thought I'd leave that in!

Guarantee the back of the box said “Fast paced action.”

Just had a look. It said "A challenge you can't walk away from!" You certainly couldn't run away from it!
