I've been subscribed to Greyhawk Grognard's (Joseph Bloch) youtube channel for a long time. I can vouch for him; he is a real authority on the lore of the World of Greyhawk and loathes WotC.
I ran a Greyhawk campaigne at uni from 1989 to 1992. I didn’t have many books, just the basics and the Greyhawk (2nd edition) box set. The main characters were a human wizard, human barbarian, and a half elf fighter/thief. My world only superficially resembled Greyhawk, but the maps got a lot of use. Many other characters came and went during the campaign, and at the end the wizard was a necromancer who was the guild master of the embalmer and gravediggers guild in Greyhawk city, who built an army of skeletons to fight IUZ’s army.
i miss the attempts at humanocentricism by classic D&D. worst thing that happened to D&D was Blizzard's Warcraft Franchise, where Races iniitally intended as nameless minions for the big bad, had to become human and relatable and especially heroic to make their stories fun to play because generic villains weren't fun. not that Warcraft was a bad idea. just that well, Warcraft came at a time that conveniently aligned with a culture trending towards monstrous PCs and the walking zoo. because of the other big fantasy work that was becoming popular again, Star Wars.
Thank you for the content, on a side note this is old news but, Now that Trump is back, I really want to know where the 15 million Biden voters were that voted in 2020 but not 2024, they seem to have dissapered. (Mind you, I'm glad they didn't show up.)
That’s a great change! I like where they’re taking it, it’s really groundbreaking. Your campaign objective is to roam the land fighting the new degenerate matriarchies and establishing a Godly patriarchy. Very edgy from WoTC.
That's true, but the original was black and white, and didn't become the standard. In fact, if anything the later mystara product maps were inspired by Greyhawk's map.
Adding more women, along with a variety of characters, cultures, and races is great for new settings, but if they changed the classic Greyhawk, then it's not really Greyhawk is it? Just more woke nonsense as usual.
Well, I'm a bit of a weirdo, in that I liked the From the Ashes box set depicting a post-war Greyhawk setting, more than the original box set. But almost all serious Greyhawk fans would vehemently disagree with me.
It may mean that Greyhawk fans can create content to sell on RPG sale sites like DMs Guild and Drivethr RPG. Mystara was also the setting that was published in the most languages. Mystara was the setting of 'Basic' D&D, Greyhawk was the default setting for AD&D (1st ed). Run a campaign to give the lands of Greyhawk male rulers again with Girdles of Masculinity/Femininity. >:)
You know, I'd have MAYBE been okay with the Greyhawk changes had they made it in the future like 2nd edition and Living Greyhawk did. But the fact it's set in 576 means we canonically know the names of the rulers, as outlined in the "Gold Box". Changing it is clearly DEI garbage, since it's changing races/genders for no reason other than virtue signaling. I'm actually KINDA okay with them changing Caliphate/Paynim and the barbarian tribes to use their "actual" names, that's not a huge concern. The swapping though is. The counter-argument I bet you'll see is that Greyhawk was always meant to be a "take it and modify it" setting which is true, I guess, but still a bad counter.
Revising history in order to pursue a political goal? Hmmm, where have I heard that being done before? Not sure. I'll have to look it up in my Soviet encyclopedia.
I went and read a sample of the "author's" work on Amazon. Uninspired prose filled with lame, ham-fisted innuendo, all couched in the purposefully, needlessly, salacious. I don't know who the audience are, but they are broken people.
@@RPGPundit My game was to give it as honest a look as I could and see if the author's skill-level could jive with even bad fantasy writing. It could not.
Greyhawk grognads products don't usually have political content, but he is, judging by some of his comments in his comment section, he is very left... not sure about woke, but definitely left. So hopefully he will continue to keep his products politics free.
You should sell copies of your books that Meatball has sat on for extra. You know like an autograph. Sorry to say, no one will want your autograph but if Meatball has sat on the book, I bet you people will pay extra for it
No names, gender, ethnicity, or relationships. If the writers only gave anathema, flaws, hobbies, motives, profession, and idiosyncrasies. The need to utilize DEI standards for character development vanishes. EDIT: A stat block including attributes, skills, features, and classes is to be expected.
Yes, but in terms of both a novel, and an RPG, those basic traits like gender, relationships, and ethnicity (to say nothing of names) are usually importing in the contextualizing of the setting. Much better just to do so in a true (classical) liberal fashion, where you refuse to make it a big deal what their gender or race is for its own sake.
I would like to thank the corporate woke trash for openly attacking the source material as it tells me everything I need to know to avoid a bad purchase.
Funny thing about the Ravenloft book...basically they hired a female romance/chick porn writer. I guess that makes some weird sense...I never quite understood the appeal of Ravenloft anyway. Always seemed a bit g...to me. The cover for the new book is more pandering in the lgbtq pallet. Just awful.
I’m not in love with WotC’s current design direction, but the agenda-soaked ineptitude guiding their choices with setting or storytelling is absolutely prohibitive.
Thankfully their cancer will never touch Dark sun, it will be much better in this hobby when wotc is dead or gone off to their silly money farming videogame
A shame Gary Gygax didn't put Dark Sun levels of slavery and genocide in Greyhawk so that it too would be untouchable by present day WotC.
LOL. Hilarious but true. Spread the word, share the video!
Im glad they are not going to touch it "YET". it's going to be histerical when wokeify it. I wonder wonder what they did with Al-Qadim?
Greyhawk Grognard has a great channel. I enjoy it quite a bit. Much better than the new DMG…

That sounds badass. 🙂
I am SO happy that WotC will probably NEVER do a current year reimagining of Dark Sun! Exciting stuff when WotC ignores your favorite settings!!!
Yeah, Dark Sun fans are the safest fans. Spread the word, share the video!
Too bad they got to Spelljammer already. Thankfully everyone knows WotC did a bad job bringing it back.
Greyhawk was not diverse enough. It was a whole freaking world. It had plenty of diversity.

I think the Scarlet Brotherhood , is now the Scarlet Order .
Yeah, because "brotherhood" is archaic (which is exactly why it should have stayed, Greyhawk IS archaic)
Yes, because a "brotherhood" is sexist. Spread the word, share the video!
Reject woke Greyhawk. Use the much better pre-existing Greyhawk material.
Or the medieval authentic Dark Albion by the final boss of internet shitlords himself.

Yes, its true, Warcraft has some blame (inspirational at least) for the races that are "human but with nonhuman skin color". As well as monster PCs.

@AdorkableDaughterofNyx "The walking zoo". Very well put; I'm going to start using that because it is painfully accurate.

Even in the 0e era what you said was not true. Blackmoor predates Greyhawk, and I've always liked it better.
