  • Defunct Games reviews Unruly Heroes by Magic Design Studios, available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
    Unruly Heroes is an epic adventure with stunning visuals, a great sense of humor and some truly inventive level designs. Every single stage is filled with standout moments, and I'm in love with a few of the boss fights. Unfortunately, some of my enthusiasm is derailed by floaty controls and combat the devolved into senseless button mashing. But don't let that be a deal-breaker, because Unruly Heroes gets almost everything else right. It's not perfect, but Unruly Heroes is worth it for the gorgeous graphics and the lengthy story. Now go on and prove that doubtful narrator wrong.

    I love this game! I'm hoping to see some Rayman-esque longevity to it.

    QOTD - This pick is quite easy - Metro series. The world depicted in Glukhovsky's novel is masterfully brought to life in the first two games. I'm slightly uneasy about the new one, as the main draw of the series was the oppressively claustrophobic setting of the Moscow metro system, but I'm really looking forward to it nonetheless.

    The sequence at 4:20 made me sad :P Illustrated your point beautifully, but it was like.... "second-hand frustrating" to watch :P When that light bridge appeared, I was like, "Oh that's a cool little puzzle" but when it disappeared on you, I was like, "Crap! crap crap crap!" haha. I got frustrated _for you_ while watching that, lol.
    Oh well - definitely keeping me eye on this one and will nab it if it sees some patches to iron things out, I guess. It looks awesome, and after seeing "Overly Sarcastic Productions'" terrific "Legends Summarized: Journey to the West" video, I'm itching for more games set in, inspired by or based on this lore (and I've already played several like Enslaved and Asura's Wrath)... but those issues definitely seem like something I want to avoid if they're going to polish this up, post-release. Which, luckily, it looks like they're doing going by their Steam updates, so awesome! Just gotta wait this one out a bit. Good review!

    This does look gorgeous. Maybe a patch can fix the issue. Every platforming game has that one level that's a pain.
    QOTD, I want to say stuff like the Bladerunner game by westwood and the shadowrun games even though they're not directly based on any single book from the source. There's also the I have no mouth and I must scream point and click game that's pretty awesome, even if Harlan Ellison is a prick.
    I need to get around the playing and reading all of The Witcher stuff.

    Strange, I didn't have any issue with the jumping system of the glowing light in the 3rd world. You press and hold down the jump button, you chose your force with the joystick, then without moving the joystick, you release the jump button.

      That just didn't work for me. I understand what was supposed to happen, but it felt like it only worked half the time. Maybe it's the version I played or I was just unlucky, but that world drove me up the wall.

    I came oh so close to finishing Saiyuki the ps1 srpg.. It’s still on my list of things to do.. It’s a great game but you need to make some time for grinding.. Before playing this I’d never heard of Journey West

    Got this for iPhone for $3 and really enjoy it. Feels at home on handlheld (I play with a controller and a controller clasp attachment... it is a fairly seemless setup).

    Game has currently been announced for a physical release by Pix'n Love publishing. Anyone know if the game has been improved via patches since this review? Looks great, but the control issues look like a total deal breaker to me.

    this game looks pretty but i might wait and see if that patch some of the control issues you say it has.. i have a few for todays question of the day and i love these games despite their problems. dragon fin soup which is loosely based on little red ridding hood, then i also really love the romance of the 3 kingdoms and dynasty warriors games which are based on the romance of the 3 kingdoms novel which is based on the the kingdom era of china near the end of the han dynasty (i would put samurai warriors here too but there are probably to many books based off the sengoku period to name a reference but heck count it anyways). child of light which is loosely based on sleeping beauty, woolfe: the redhood diaries which is a red ridding hood story (as bad as that game reviewed and people say it is there is something i really like about it), american mcgee's alice based on alice in wonderland so is its sequel alice: madness returns, and wolf among us which is based on the fables comics which is based on a lot of fair tales. but im going to say my top 3 are 1 and 2 are american mcgees alice and alice: madness returns because alice in wonderland, and through the looking glass are 2 and 3 of my top favorite books only being beat by the last unicorn. i heard mcgee is trying to get funding for a 3rd game i really hope that is true because i would love a 3rd game. and number 3 is tough to choose between child of light and wolf among us... i guess i will go with child of light because it is actually a finished story to where wolf among us is not and with the fall of telltale and the cancellation of wolf season 2 it never will be. lol yeah i think thats about it... i really need to stop leaving you such long comments and cut them down a little.

    Looks like a great couch co-op game. Been looking for a new one so I'll probably pick this up after me and the wife/kid beat Redeemer this week (although that new 4 player co-op mage game looks a little enticing too). Another great review man. As usual.

    Well, this might be a little on the late side asking this question now...
    But, as you probably would expect from someone with a username like mine, I wonder if you remember how this game saves...?

    • @DefunctGames
      @DefunctGames  Рік тому +1

      As you may have noticed, I tend to not single out the way the save functionality works in most of my reviews. Honestly, that's not something I really thought about all that much (until you asked on several games). If it comes up, it's usually because the saving (or checkpointing) is exceptionally good ... or there's something wrong with it that needs to be addressed. For the most part, if I don't mention it, I would say that the saving is pretty standard. That is, it saves after every level or there are points where you can save at regular points in the game. Now, there are some genres where this is not the case, such as Roguelikes. However, if we're dealing with a Roguelike, then I will usually explain how the saving works. In the case of Atari's Recharged series, those are intended to be reinvented arcade games, so the saving works a lot like it does in the arcade (saves your high score).
      I will confess, I don't remember how this game saved, but since I didn't single it out for having a bad save system, I imagine that it's pretty standard (i.e.: save after each level).

    • @KillCounter_SaveScummer
      @KillCounter_SaveScummer Рік тому

      I will also admit that I had a feeling that this was the case with this game, regarding the saving that is.
      And I shall also reveal to you that the reason I'm asking these questions is because I'm using the saving system as a means to decide whether to play a multiplatform game on PlayStation or PC.
      If the saving system of a game is "standard", as defined by you, I will designate it for PS; but, on the other hand, if a game allows save-scumming (which might even be what you defined as "exceptionally good") then I'll consider it a PC game and will play it accordingly.
      So, now you know the truth behind my fixation with saving systems.
      In addition to that, as my first name kinda suggests, I also try my best to keep track of kill counts in various games; and I have been doing so for way over a year now.
      I'm mostly on Reddit for this purpose, wherein the fantastic communities of said site have been most helpful in the course of this quest; and, as a result, I have hitherto managed to amass 800+ titles to mentioned list 😁!
      However, in the rare instance that neither Reddit nor Google can provide me with an answer to how a game saves in particular, I occasionally make my journey over to UA-cam (or Steam) as a last resort to gain closure on said matter (as I've just done).
      And you've been equally helpful as any Redditor, so you'll always have my infinite gratitude for this reason 🙏.
      Until our (digital) paths cross again ✌️👋!

    Book or fairy tale, huh? Well, now a days, can only get it through a ROM and Emulator, unless you're lucky and get it off of something like eBay, but back before it was a show, before it was a movie, Stephen King's The Mist was an Apple IIe game. I heard about it from my dad when I was growing up, and found a ROM of it online.
