I bought it on sale for a bit more than £7 (60% discount maybe). I started not long ago and I am quite enjoying it with Yunica. I'm at floor 9 at the moment and it is an easy one to recommend. I will be playing Ys VIII in a few months, I see Origin as a warmup introduction to the Ys world.
Your guy's scoring system is by far my favorite. While I do appreciate most channels for putting their own flare in reviews, a lot can lean heavy towards the reviewer's taste which can be very subjective and after watching a few I still can't always get a read on a game. Your reviewing structure makes it very clear what I'm going to get (if I buy) when I watch these. Thankyou.
Its currently on sale for $7.99 on PS4 so I picked it up there. It also allows a PS Vita version with it. I've played many titles of YS on Vita. I really appreciate your thorough reviews.
My absolute favourite ys game I wish all the others were like this. I remember going into the bosses Chambers dying after several attempts giving up and going back to grind returning to the boss after a little while and doing it easy. Makes you feel like you really progress. And the story is great never played as Hugo.
I would definitely pick this up, but I already picked it up on steam on sale a couple months ago, so I'm still working on it there. Nice to see the switch version is solid though. So excited for Ys IX to drop next year!
I loved this game so much on PC that I immediately ordered the collectors edition from LRG when it was announced. Looking forward to playing on the go!
Oh, Breath of Fire III, how I wish CAPCOM would port it and IV to Switch. I mean they already have I & II on the online service. This looks really good though. It’s hard to be a good dungeon crawler.

I'm still waiting for rerelease of Ys Seven for the Switch. At first glance it seems like Secret/Trials of Mana (a series I've always loved), so I wanted to try it. Unfortunately, since I never had the chance to get a PSP (recession and all), I never got to play it. So, I'm crossing my fingers for a Switch release of No. 7.
Personally, I'd love to see Ys Seven on the Switch. Played it on the PSP/Vita back in the day and that game was amazing. Wow do I wish Sony hadn't of murdered it's Vita, way ahead of it's time.
The only puzzle that got me stuck was the pipe one. I think I looked around for an hour looking for the damn pipe before looking it up in a guide. I've played through Oath, Origins, Ark, Seven and Celceta. Tackling Eight next!
@@squintygreeneyes If you like action RPGs then the Ys series is definitely a solid recommendation. The earliest titles are short (around 10 hours) so their pacing is good and keep the boss encounters coming at a steady pace. The Ys titles are notorious though for how they handle their character levels. If a boss or particular section of enemies is stomping your ass it's probably because you're 1 or 2 levels under what you should be. Just grind for about 15 minutes and you should be ready to tackle what's ahead. Am advantage of being short is that you can actually replay on higher difficulties without feeling burnt out on the game. This is not something that can be said of Ys 7, Celceta or 8. Those titles you just start on Hard mode and depending on your mood maybe you replay on Nightmare or the hardest difficulty.
one of very few Ys game that I completed. I personally think this is better than Lacrimosa of Dana. Focusing combat on one character is better than doing as a team.
This looks really lovely and I've been wanting to try a Ys game after watching reviews of Ys 8. I have a question - and this relates to Final Fantasy games as well - I haven't played any of these games, and I'm a little intimidated by the large libraries each has. Is there a particular game for each series I should start with, or can I just jump into any of them without any difficulty?
Bob Menzel Ys 8 is a fantastic one to start with. Other than very few allusions to other adventures, you can go in completely new. 8 was my first and I loved it. Final Fantasy is a bit different because while you can play them in any order, there are different eras. You might prefer one style of RPG over another. 4 or 6 are great to start with for the SNES era. 7 or 9 is great for starting the PS1 era (probably best not to play Remake first). 10 might be nice to play first. Or if you don’t like turn based RPGs at all, 15 is real-time like Ys. There are a number of videos about which Final Fantasy might be right for you to start with. My favorite is the one from SuperButterBuns. Edit: I feel I must let my bias known, however. I have not liked FF since it got more in the style of Kingdom Hearts. I found 4 in college and devoured 1-10. 13 and 15 are a bit too Nomura-ish to me. The series has not been the same since its creator Hironobu Sakaguchi left after 10. That’s just my opinion though.
Yeah, the story continuity is not all that important with either series. There are little things here and there, but you won't miss anything important if you'd prefer to start with a later entry.

Nice review! I want to play Ys 1 and 2 before this game comes out. Do you (or anyone) know the best edition available of those games? And the best system to play them on today?
If you’ve got a PC, Ys 1 and 2 Chronicles isn’t too demanding from a hardware perspective and is considered one of the bedt ways to experience the first two games. Just bear in mind that they are very, VERY ‘classical’ in their approach. You won’t find the combat to be as fast-paced or hacky/slashy, and it leans into a lot of labyrinth-style dungeons. It’s still worth a look and it’s dirt cheap at £10 on Steam.
P N your other options (most recently) are PS2, original DS (physical only, I believe?) or the PSP. The problem with the Ys series is that it really is a coin flip over which games get rereleases, which consoles they’re released on and the hardware they were originally developed for. It’s definitely not a platform exclusive series! However, it looks like going forward the series will be prioritised for Switch, PC and PS4. You can never tell with Ys! However, the widest selection is on PC; you can nab pretty much every localised Ys game or remake going on there, and you don’t need a supercomputer to play them either. It’s worth nothing that some Ys games, like Oath in Felghana or Memoroes of Celcetta are remakes of 3 and I think 4? The only one not to receive a western release OR a remake is Ys 5, although that was poorly received, developed by another studio and never saw a Western release back when it was first developed. Your only choice there is emulation and a fan made translation, though even then it’s considered not really to be worth the effort by series fans.
and before somebody comes with "eeeh you can region mimimi" ....yeah i know that. Buti dont like making thing unnecessarily complicated with searching for cards from the UK - making a profile and so on ^^. Moving is MUCH easier lol xD (...just joking ^^)
Ys I is basically just a bad game. Ys II is way better, but still very old school. Worth your time only if you really like retro games. I played them on Steam.
@@Dzztzt I actually got to this one pretty quick in the end. Did 2 play through and loved it. But your comment has reminded me I've got a third play through to get back to. So, cheers.
@@Dzztzt the two main characters play very differently and their adventure up the tower is also different enough in my opinion. Enjoy when you get to it.
If you live in EU the game is availabe in the strictly limited games website, or retail on October 16. The US version was part of a preorder from Limited Run Games months ago and will be availabe on Bestbuy more later this year.
I prefer this to Ys 8. Ys 8 was way too slow to get in to with some God damn shit voice acting (as every single game seems to have these days). The written dialogue for the story is a God send over the cringe on Ys 8. I actually prefer this not only to Ys 8 but to 99% of games I've played. It looks and sounds amazing. Yes it is dated but the scenery really works and with the story it is really immersive. The soundtrack just blends it all together perfectly. I think this review is a bit harsh on the soundtrack. Everyone I have played this with ends up humming, or whistling the songs. I absolutely love the OST and I never tire of it. It is so much fun to play this game and the bosses are brilliant. It is non stop entertainment. I play plenty of hack and slash and it just never feels as satisfying as this. There is a downside to this game and that is the unbalanced difficulty. Easy is too easy and you just sail through unchallenged. Normal difficulty is really nice, not too challenging but not too easy. Just a nice play through speed. This is where I hit the problem. I got to the sand level boss on medium and he just smashed me over and over. Obviously I need to level up but levelling up is taking me hours. I got so sick of trying to level up I restarted on easy, just to progress the story and see some new levels. I have since gone back to it. I must have killed about 10000 enemies and still not levelled up, so it just annoys me a bit that it worked so nicely on normal setting for me right up to this point but then I've hit this difficulty spike. The two hardest difficulty settings are obviously for autistic finger ninja's. For me the difficulty spike could just be that I'm shit at gaming and everything else about the game I love, so I can't knock it for one issue. There was no nostalgia for me with this game. I knew nothing of Ys and never played it before. I can only really liken the experience for me to playing A Link to the Past. Now that is a pretty big statement for me as I was 11 when playing ALttP and it still remains my favourite game of all time. For me Ys Origin works in the same way - as a solid piece. I played Hollow Knight and loved the smooth controls but it had the colour scheme of a 7 year old girls halloween outfit and with the bug theme and the music, it just had nothing nice, nothing gelled well. It just felt like a horrible mess but with lovely smooth controls. Ys Origin is as cohesive as it gets. It feels like the developers, the story writers, the designers, the music producers have all been in the same room, working towards the same goal. I feel so immersed in it. 10/10 game for me.
I love an Ys game - this one is slightly different though, let me know what you think of it! Could I say Seeya? Let’s find out! Mark

and before somebody comes with "eeeh you can region mimimi" ....yeah i know that. Buti dont like making thing unnecessarily complicated with searching for cards from the UK - making a profile and so on ^^. Moving is MUCH easier lol xD (...just joking ^^)
Hehehe yeah that's expensive! Mark
You guys don't sleep!!!
Literally... Mark
@@SwitchUpYt nothing but quality content oozing from you guys nonetheless!
Quick question. Does this game have HD rumble?
Ys this the first Ys game I'll ever play? Let's find out! Ok, that was bad...I'll leave now....seeya!
The game looks awesome to me
I find it for > than £20 everywhere, amazon and base.com for starters... you sure about the price?
Pre-order discount on eshop.
Is it worth it for 7 quid? It's on sale till 11th April
So I want to play Ys I & II. But which one of the console version would you guys reccomend?
Ys I is basically just a bad game. Ys II is way better, but still very old school. Worth your time only if you really like retro games. I played them on Steam.
@@CricketStyleJ Thanks for the comment.
@@sadam-kd5ug You can play YS 1&2 chronicles on PSP or PC, don't play YS2 before YS1 because it is a direct sequel😉
Love it
Physical is already ordered, to sit on a shelf.
Mine sits as well. I just grabbed the digital half off.
@@Dzztzt I actually got to this one pretty quick in the end. Did 2 play through and loved it. But your comment has reminded me I've got a third play through to get back to. So, cheers.
@@themarzipanster2190 glad it's worth revisiting. Looking forward to it.
@@Dzztzt the two main characters play very differently and their adventure up the tower is also different enough in my opinion. Enjoy when you get to it.
Do I buy it on ps4/vita for $8 or do I buy it physically on switch for $42.
Decisions. Decisions.

Can we just talk about how there cg cinematic scenes was on point? Like frfr 2006 like omgoodness ahead of there times my dude
What site is everyone buying physical copy's from?
Does this have English voice acting?
found this on steam for $5 if anyone plays on pc
Looks a little like ragnarok online
