  • KTM campaigns on “a Duke naked motorcycle for everyone” with the introduction of its affordable 200 Duke ($3,999). Although new for the US market, the 2020 Duke 200 is a second-generation platform that boasts a fully redesigned engine as compared to the existing 390 Duke.
    --
Although small in terms of displacement (and price), the Duke 200 is big on capability-as we learned after riding it in the city, around the go-kart track, and across autobahn-like SoCal freeways. With its low seat and 340-pound curb weight, the Duke is easy to ride for virtually any able-bodied person. It’s nimble, easy to park, yet it feels like a real 3/4-sized motorcycle as compared to minimoto bikes from Big Red and Team Green. Sensible ergonomics make for a comfortable cockpit for a wide range of riders, including this 6-foot pilot. There’s also room for a passenger.
KTM has a knack for engineering good-performing single-cylinder engines, and this 199cc power unit is one of its finest. The engine offers a smooth spread of propulsion with a rev-happy powerband. We are especially keen on the 10,000 rpm power surge/hit which makes for a more entertaining ride. Although the engine is only good for 22 ponies at the business end of the Michelin Road 5 tire (and 13.13 pound-feet at 8,060 rpm), the Duke can accelerate hard from a stop for those not afraid of working the six-speed gearbox. It is freeway capable too, with an 87 mph top speed. It’s easy on fuel, as well, with it averaging 51 mpg during high-rpm riding.
Even at high speeds, the engine isn’t as buzzy as other singles, including KTM’s own 390. It also offers a pleasing and meaty-sounding exhaust note. The suspension components offer nearly 5 inches of travel and deliver fair ride quality over rough pavement, yet still provide acceptable damping at a sport-oriented pace. You’re still going to feel big bumps, but it rides well for its price.
The OE-fitted Michelins have plenty of grip for a trackday, and the ABS-enabled brakes are equally capable. Rear ABS can be manually disabled, if desired. A more simple LCD keeps tabs on machine vitals. It’s a tad small, yet again, considering its price, we won’t knock it. There’s no LED lighting either, but the halogen-bulb headlight performs better than expected during night rides.
This KTM 200 is more adept than any other sub-250cc-displacement bikes we’ve ridden recently. It’s easy to ride, has enough power to get the blood pumping, and offers a level of exhilaration, even in a more experienced rider’s hands. Then, of course, there’s its appearance. We’re big fans of its aggressive praying mantis-like lines, which are in line with the rest of the Duke family. Build quality and fit and finish also show tremendous improvement from first-generation 390s. Riders seeking a fun, affordable, and versatile bike regardless of their level of expertise will appreciate the fun-sized factor of KTM’s 200 Duke.

Great review, and gave me a good feeling for how it handles, and what it feels like. Admittedly, I puckered up a bit having ridden for almost 30 years in a state that doesn’t allow bridging gaps. 😂
I normally ride an 1150gs, but it’s just too big anymore for the traffic in metro denver, and I think the little duke will be a perfect city bike. Your review confirms that. -Looks like it’s incredibly easy to throw around without much effort.
They targeted it for beginners, but I think it makes a LOT of sense for experienced riders who are just looking for a commuter bike.
Thanks for the thorough review, and ride safe.

It’s great. Very easy to handle, takes corners really nicely, breaks feel solid, and the ergonomics of the bike keeps me riding for longer periods. Takes off really well and shifting is a breeze. I even enjoy taking her on the freeway. The seat is 50/50, it doesn’t bother me or some of my friends at all and feels pretty comfortable but there is also a few of my buddies that don’t like it after about 45 mins of riding. The range with the tank is decent as well.
Plus every time I think the bike can’t give me anymore I get surprised as she just keeps giving. When you can’t stop smiling when riding you know you got a good bike on your hands.
All in all great beginners bike and even seasoned riders will have a blast on the Duke 390.
Highly recommend this bike to any and everyone!

So many issues, at least with the RC390 that I was super considered and struck KTM off my list.

    • @kreepinonya
      @kreepinonya 2 роки тому +1

I know there was issues with the previous yrs (17-19 if I’m not mistaken) for the Duke 390 but I believe they addressed those issues with the 2020 model. I haven’t had any issues and my sales rep even included and 5 yr extended warranty for the engine with unlimited miles for me just to be on the safe side.
As for the RC390 I have heard that has had it’s more than it’s fair share of issues which kept me away from the RC all together. I didn’t even wanna test ride it because of all the issues I’ve heard with them. Thankfully KTM is coming out with a revamped RC390 in 2022 that is suppose to address those issues plus give a nice upgraded look.
Awesome to hear you’re getting another bike regardless of make and model. Anything with 2 wheels and an engine that goes with the twist of the wrist is good times.
      Stay Safe and Ride Vigilantly!

This bike will push more sales of the 390 then the 490 when released. Americans love to default to the "middle" package for cars and other large electronic/appliance purchases so now the 390 wont be the smallest offering and will make people more comfortable of buying the medium sized bike. genius...

I bought one in Australia a few days ago, I don’t know where you get some of the facts from but some need to be reviewed.
The seat height IS the same as the 390, the size and all dimensions are the same.
Almost all parts will swap over to the 390.
Swapping to a aftermarket exhaust is impossible currently as this bike uses a completely different exhaust layout than the other smaller Duke 125 to 390 models.
I am looking to see if the aftermarket exhaust from cylinder head back can be made to fit.
(So exhaust goes over the top of the motor like a 390) this will increase the ground clearance by 100 mm.
I work at a KTM dealer, will keep investigating:)
Just fitted a 15 tooth front sprocket, now can use more of the gears. Do not recommend if living in a hilly area as first becomes very tall.

Thanks for the thorough review. I'm a daily cruiser rider that needs something for in town because I'm tired of dragging. This seems like a fun, cheap little ripper and there's a used one for only 2k near me. Funny how easy money flies away when you're into bikes.

Lets be clear, KTM has designed and sold the 200 Duke for Asia where it has been sold for years, importing it to the USA was hardly much effort and helps to justify the higher price of the 390! In many SE Asian countries sub 200 cc scooters are the norm, so by comparison, the 200 Duke is actually a performance bike!

Thank you KTM and Adam Waheed for such an awesome and relevant motorcycle/review!
This little bike IS the gap filler between “mini Moto” bikes that can’t do highway speeds safely and boring “commuter” designed bikes - Adam gets it - I can’t understand why the majority of the motorcycling public shuns a model such as this; it retails for “grom” money but it’s still a fun bike that can do highway speeds all day - while looking stunning and competent handling all at the same time - well done - I hope we see a LOT more bikes like this in the future - they just make sense in this ever more expensive world… fun at the same time responsible - great review!

The KTM website does not specify the curb weight for the 200 Duke.
It does say the 390 Duke weighs in at 328lbs.
This video calls the 200 Duke 340lbs.
If this is true, then why is it heavier than the 390??

    • @onyx_might72
      @onyx_might72 5 місяців тому

Cause I see the max mph is only like 10mph-15mph difference. Would sprockets, exhaust, intake and a tune make up the difference? I hear this engine has more performance in it but has been gutted for emissions. If I'm wrong please inform me ,don't want to waste money on crap
