When the woman started talking about winning a grammy but couldn't put a number to how many grammies would be enough for her, the only thing I could think of was the scene from Cool Runnings where John Candy said, "A gold medal is a wonderful thing, but if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it."

I love when he talked about "why". I think the reason so many people don't know why they do things is because as kids we're taught to stop asking why, and just accept.

The topic discussed by Simon concerning art has been my biggest peeves, but I want to add on what he has listed:
    1. Intention
    This > Identifiable effort
    2. Positioning (in venue)
    3. Perception
Learning about Graphic Design, and later jumping into Media Studies in my tertiary ed, it's been strongly argued what makes a piece of Art unique, as per Copyright Laws. True, 1, 2 and 3 applies at various levels, platforms and targeted audiences, but effort is also what differentiates a skilled doodle from a lazily mashed-up attempt.
I guess you can say that Art is not just the perception of effort, it is also the ability to acknowledge that it exist in the work that it is put into.

Thank you for the heart and hope to make a world a better place :)
    very pleased by it.
The term that simon speak about how an
object qualified to be called as a art.
In design field we call it "Form . Content . Context"
So a art must have this 3 basic qualities
Form talking about the shape (style, line quality, colour, light, motion etc)
Content talking about the artist tension (purpose n meaning behind it)
And Context, the connection between the subject on art itself and
the relation with human / target audience, simplified as
historical background of the subject on the image itself.
And amazing fact about that trio,
it can be use to critize anything, poem, movie, song etc.
I think its the same structure with the golden circle why how what.

I can relate it to research work in universities. One of the most attractive cases for faculties is number of papers published. This can show great how major the impact of ones research work was during Ph.D period. Sounds fair and good, right? Well, there are countless of ways people try to publish their work in so called high impact journals, needless to say many of which are unfair but it helps to get the paper published. Instead of focusing on really coming up with novel ideas and real high impact results, they try to publish as much as possible. Something that doesn't help much to bring a real perceptible impact. For sure, old inventors like Tomas Edison never thought about how to increase their reputation by doing these.
Michael Sandel also refers to the similar cases in his talk series 'What money can't buy'.

I had this jump in consciousness you could say back in 2012 when the occupy movement happened. Police brutality was getting out of hand, and new radically alternative thoughts began to emerge. It was so inspiring to see people in a large collective peacefully protest the injustice being wrought against them. I began to have hope once more for humanity as a whole. It was great to be proud of the planet instead of saddened by it. There was so much that happened, so many new dreams and like a purging of negative energies. the mayan calander and whole ending of the world thing with niburu or planet 9 or now i think they may br calling it nemesis... 12/21/2012 it was a noticeable shift in the energy of the planet. But the world moved on.

Loved this session. Jen: Thank you for making this video available. On the topic of patronage: Jack Conte, the founder of Patreon has a great video about the history of patronage and how patronage was a very natural way for arists to make money but then things changed around 1900 once art needed to be put on physical media. ua-cam.com/video/hh7NDvGCiDA/v-deo.html . Jack's channel is a gold mine in general.

Not exactly. Patreon is essentially paycheck by croud sourseing. Its not a bad system but requires somewhat continuious effort on the users part. Old patronage was essentially a garenteed salary with the premise (in therory) that even if it took years you were developing something worthwhile, takeing pressure off the artist in regards to bills ect

at 28:05: "human brain cannot comprehend the negative". Then he goes on to give examples that could be described as the brain HYPER-comprehending the negative, i.e. becoming so obsessed with the negative that that is all that is seen. Say "don't hit the trees", and then all you see is trees. What he means, I take it, is that the brain can't convert negatives into logical positives, like from "don't hit the trees" to "DO go in between the trees".

What a load of crap! One should never focus on whatever is the goal without giving any thought to anything else. This is the common path to unhappiness. People focus on the business, career, promotion, buying this or that but loose sight of what they are missing in the process.
There is enough science and evidence on what makes us happy. Achieving some silly goals is not on a list.
