Yilian Cañizares has been invited to perform during the United Nations World Oceans Day. For this very special occasion she created "Yemayá" remix her tribute to the West African Goddess of the Sea. This song and the dance evoke the movement of the waves and the fundamental role that our positive interaction with the environment has for the survival of humanity. She calls on Yemayá to help humanity heal the pollution of the oceans and to respect Mother Earth.

Yemayá (also spelled Yemoja, Iemoja, or Yemaya) is one of the most powerful orishas in Santeria. She is the mother of all living things, rules over motherhood and owns all the waters of the Earth. She gave birth to the stars, the moon, the sun and most of the orishas. Yemaya makes her residence in life-giving portion of the ocean (although some of her roads can be found in lagoons or lakes in the forest). Yemaya’s aché is nurturing, protective and fruitful. Yemaya is just as much a loving mother orisha as she is a fierce warrior that kills anyone who threatens her children.
Yemaya can be found in all the waters of the world, and because of this she has many aspects of “caminos” (roads), each reflecting the nature of different bodies of water

Yemayá, orisha del panteón Yorubá, es la señora de la maternidad, protectora de los marinos y del hogar y reina de las aguas del mar. Sincretizada en la virgen de Regla, de herencia católica y santa patrona del pueblo del mismo nombre, fundado a finales del siglo XVII alrededor de la Ermita consagrada a su culto, ella es tan venerada entre sus fieles como la propia virgen de la Caridad (Oshún), la santa patrona de Cuba.
Uno de los más conocidos ritos capitalinos, nacido del sincretismo religioso predominante en Cuba, consiste en arrojar monedas al mar en la rada habanera, como ofrenda de fe a Yemayá, a cambio de obtener la gracia de esta divinidad en cuestiones de amor, de prosperidad familiar, de trabajo, de salud e incluso para rogarle protección en caso de algún viaje.
