I am so glad I found this video. I’ve changed several of these pumps on those trucks.. as most of us.. I was removing the entire bed… from start to finish was done in an hour tops… Thank you ..!!!!
Cliff, I'm really impressed by your abilities! You do it right! You're first class all the way! I'm a former tool&die maker, super stock drag racer (record holder) engine builder, chassis builder and like you I can do about anything. I'm going to replace my 1998 S10 fuel pump tomorrow using your method of raising the bed. I have never seen this! You and I think alike ingenuity and creativity. The main difference is I'll be 69 next week so it may take me a little while longer. I saw a C6/C7 in your garage. I own a 2004 C5 under a cover with 17000 miles on it. Thanks and Godspeed!
the rear light wiring cables ground out on left side under bed with harness. Unplug harness and unscrew ground wire. after you tilt bed up you can slide it bed over rear wheels giving you more room.. great video
I like the comments saying it's easier to drop the tank. The straps are usually rusted 1st. Then you have to disconnect the lines before you can completely drop the tank spout or filler disconnect, the cover around the tank. 4 bolts/ filler boot disconnect and raising the bed is fast and easy. Then you only have to disconnect at the pump. More time than not most pumps gomout when there is alot of fuel in the tank. Big mess dropping a tank in your driveway and not to mention lifting it back up. Having enough room to.drop the tank also means having you whole truck up in the air. That's alot more work. I like this method alot more.. the post is a great one and an option I always choose when working on a basic truck pump.
Looks like a pretty straight forward job. My fuel pump died on me today. I should have noticed that the pump was dying on me because it was becoming harder to start. I checked the fuses and relays and they all seem just fine. It's just that fuel pump that's gonna have to come out. I like that I don't have to completely remove my bed and propping it up like I saw here is a great idea. It's nice that replacing it won't cost a lot.
Great video! Got all the bolts removed and loosened from the bed, then tilted it back and blocked it for safety, and then WOW!!!! No sight of fuel pump. My S10 is a four door so i have to drop the tank instead.
I would highly recommend doing this or cutting the bed. I’m dropping the tank and everything is breaking not to mention the driveshaft and the exhaust has to come off just to get to the fuel lines. Big mistake on my part.
Thank you for the great step by step replacing of the fuel pump. Extremely helpful. The pump has been ordered. Knowing that there are only 8 bolts was very helpful.
Just did this job today on my 2003 Sonoma ZRX..because I needed to replace the fuel tank pressure sensor which was throwing a P0446 code. Just to add to this video. The bed weights about 70 lbs but is bulky.. If you have 2 people -- you will be able to tilt it right up; also there is a channel on the frame where the bed bolts in that the is perfect size for a 2 x4.. place one 10 inch 2x4 on each side and you will obtain excellent clearance; on my truck the fuel tank filler hose bolts were 7mm and there were only 3 of them on my truck; the 8 bed to frame bolts are 15 mm; and there was enough space to remove the front 4 using my Milwaukee 1/2 drive mini impact . I did not have enough space to use the impact for the 4 "rear" bolts and had to use a rachet.. This method worked perfectly. I initially tried to lower the tank down but due to rust -- the 15 mm strap nut was frozen and I did not want to create additional problems... Great video.
Your doing it the hard way. First of all, I have 4 vehicles, so I have a road service plan with 135 miles of free towing. I wouldn't have had to pay a tow bill unless I was a long way from home. As for actually replacing the pump, my 1993 has a step bumper on it, along with a dual exhaust that sticks out from under that. Removing all that would be a nightmare. So instead, I brought 3 coworkers home one Friday evening, We lifted the bed straight up and off, and set it on four 5 gallon buckets. I replaced the pump over the weekend, and they came back Monday evening and we set the bed back in place. I bought them a couple cases of beer for their trouble.
Tilt bed by myself, replacement in an hour, single bay garage. Your way gives more working room but it isn't easier. It took all weekend and required four people and more space. It also cost you several cases of beer.
Thanks a lot, I'm removing the bed of my 97 orchard s10. Im going to replace the fuel tanks with kegs and and put a little gated flatbed on her hahahaha.
5 years ago and you got rain. Well don't feel bad I'm in Florida and got to do the same thing and it's going to rain. The sunshine States the only place it will rain with the sun out and not a cloud in the sky.
Was the old fuel pump unusually loud before it quit? I have a 2000 Sonoma 4.3 with 46,000.. the pump has been loud for years now, never any signs of low fuel pressure as it has plenty of power.
it really isn't bad...ive seen a few trucks fixed by normal guys where the whole bed removed, fuel pump replaced, bed put back on and test drove in less than 30 min
Thanks bro i was having the same problems with my s10 I when and replaced it myself but when I was done it wouldn’t start up again so before you replace something else go get your batterie check out then I got the recharge and started right away so do the first before you put more money on it.
Bad battery and fuel pump have totally different symptoms. If it had a bad battery and you replaced fuel pump thats like replacing tires because your headlights dont work.
+Lestat I've replaced pumps both ways. In my opinion, this was much easier than wrestling the tank full of gas. I had to remove 4 bolts, and loosen 2. They weren't rusty at all, and easily broke free with a breaker bar. After that, I just used a jack to lift it. I think it took me an hour and a half to do this. That includes record time, and doing the wiring necessary. Quick and easy.
I had my fuel pump replaced and then about a year later my gas needle started messing up. It's always showing full and occasionally will Bob back-and-forth but it always goes back to the full mark.
jeff yea it definitely is. green cap equals evap. to get rid of pressure either find a Schrader valve on the fuel rail or pull the relay to let it die. but if the pump is out it doesn't even matter.
Just take the bed off, that's the safe way. It's not that heavy if you get two people. I just slid it off to one side and stopped it with an old spare tire flip it around to wire wheel and undercoat it.
+Jeremy Moore you know, I really don't know for sure! My car has a roll pan welded on. I would say that I don't think so, but you may want to verify that!
would you know how to remove the antenna on the passenger side fender so you can completely remove the fender? I need to replace the passenger side fender on my 96 chevy s10 but after loosening the two bolts on the antenna, I can't figure out how to remove the antenna.
I’ve heard many people say they’ve had to replace them. However, I will say this: if you’re buying a 1998 anything, that thing is 20 years old. You’re going to have to work on it...
My pump wasn't bad but the sender was doing the bounce thing. I'd say it should be an expected repair at some point. I had a pump go out on a 1999 Ford Contour as well.
I’d try some penetrating lube. Let it sit for a bit. You can’t really use heat on that one, as I’m assuming you’re trying to loosen the body mount bolts? Those mounts are rubber, heat will destroy it.
its much better to just take the box all the way off the truck ,,,, you will need to get at the pump so you can push it down ,,,i just did this ,,,, and you will need a impact gun to get the bed bolts off because they are very rusty and you may break some of them
I had no problem getting them loose. And if you think it's better to take off the whole bed, that would definitely give you more room to work. But it was just me working on it. you need at least two people to pull the bed.
I am so glad I found this video. I’ve changed several of these pumps on those trucks.. as most of us.. I was removing the entire bed… from start to finish was done in an hour tops… Thank you ..!!!!
Lit cigar next to gas filler cap. My hero. Excellent video
He's gangsta he gives zero efffs😂

I'm getting ready to buy 99 that's got the same problem thank you very helpful
Thank you. Just changed my daughter's pump in her 1995 GMC Sonoma. Your videos helped alot!!
the rear light wiring cables ground out on left side under bed with harness. Unplug harness and unscrew ground wire. after you tilt bed up you can slide it bed over rear wheels giving you more room.. great video

ok I'll just take it easy lifting the front up this evening, and keep an eye on the back. great video, and thanks for your response and time.
awesome video i used this method to replace the fuel pump on a friends truck and it worked perfectly
great job thanks for sharing
i like this method way more than dropping the damn tank. seems easier. thanks

Gerald Scott bro that took three days, he did this in (I'm guessing under an hour?)

Thank you for making this video. Very thorough on bolt location. Great video
Thanks a lot, I'm removing the bed of my 97 orchard s10.
Im going to replace the fuel tanks with kegs and and put a little gated flatbed on her hahahaha.
I'am Your Newest Subscriber Great Videos
Florida man changes s10 fuel pump like a boss.
remove the gas cap! no venting the Schrader core Bah dah boom & put out cigar too!
Why cigar doesn't ignite gas grandma.🙄
I'm thinking that I'll remove rear most first and replace with longer ones so they can be even looser than originals but still keep bed from shifting
You're the man. Great vid.
5 years ago and you got rain. Well don't feel bad I'm in Florida and got to do the same thing and it's going to rain. The sunshine States the only place it will rain with the sun out and not a cloud in the sky.
I’m in orlando, so I know the pain!
Just wanted to let people know to make sure ground wires at the drivers side rear of frame are rust free before going directly to the pump....
Chris Paul i just replaced my pump. i took the bed off. stiil wont start. heard i gotta put the bed back on with the wire hook up. ground wires.
ok , delete your number, what time
Nice have the cigar at the fule cap
good video but that valve under the green cap is for the evap. thats not going to relieve the fuel pressure
Was the old fuel pump unusually loud before it quit? I have a 2000 Sonoma 4.3 with 46,000.. the pump has been loud for years now, never any signs of low fuel pressure as it has plenty of power.
+Eric Worden I didn't notice any noise, it would just not work randomly.
good-looking truck
I got the older model (4.3l vortec) i reviewed it on my channel affordable and just great little trucks.
wow that looks like a nightmare. on a subaru you just have to lift up on your backseat and then there is the acsess panel
it really isn't bad...ive seen a few trucks fixed by normal guys where the whole bed removed, fuel pump replaced, bed put back on and test drove in less than 30 min
Shishizurui I'm a Subaru guy who was gifted a GMC Sonoma with 335k miles. I appreciate your comment
The green caped port is the evap diagnostic port, Not fuel pressure release.
would be easier of you drop the gas tank ?
is that a cigar un your hand great combo with gas fumes.
+Edwin Rodriguez I didn't think so. Tank was full of gas. That is a cigar. I was done before cracking open the tank.
+Lestat but by all means, if you prefer to crawl under the truck and do it that way, have at it! I prefer this way by a long shot!
i had to do the same thing on my 96' ZR2......to each his own but i prefer pulling the bed off
What size are the bed bolts
I had my fuel pump replaced and then about a year later my gas needle started messing up. It's always showing full and occasionally will Bob back-and-forth but it always goes back to the full mark.
Bradley Davis Could be a wire grounding out from the pump, or the arm on the pump is out.
Thank you I will check.
correct me if I am wrong but wasn't that the evap test port at 6:20 into the video. other than that , nice idea .
+jeff I think you're right actually!
jeff yea it definitely is. green cap equals evap. to get rid of pressure either find a Schrader valve on the fuel rail or pull the relay to let it die. but if the pump is out it doesn't even matter.
least i wasn't only one who noticed that lol
Just take the bed off, that's the safe way. It's not that heavy if you get two people. I just slid it off to one side and stopped it with an old spare tire flip it around to wire wheel and undercoat it.
smoking a cigar play with gas lol
+Junior Ortiz that's how I roll!
Junior Ortiz myth busters proved you cannot start a fire with a lit cigarette and gas.
Straight up, beer in the bed on the fender well.
My thaughts to...
Lol
What color is your truck? Im really liking it.
It’s a gunmetal grey. Mitsubishi color actually. And thank you!
It looks better than having to bring the gas tank out.
You might have a bad ground wire. They rot out.
Love this method, would the rear bumper need to be removed?
+Jeremy Moore you know, I really don't know for sure! My car has a roll pan welded on.
I would say that I don't think so, but you may want to verify that!
The bumper is attached to the frame, so if you were to remove the bed, take off the bumper first. It's like 4 bolts or something
No taillights and bumper stay intact
My truck is doing just the same.
will it be better to just remove the whole bed?
I wouldn't think so. But if you think so, then do it!
Cliff's How To Channel what year is your truck?
would you know how to remove the antenna on the passenger side fender so you can completely remove the fender? I need to replace the passenger side fender on my 96 chevy s10 but after loosening the two bolts on the antenna, I can't figure out how to remove the antenna.
+Brian Denney not really sure off the top of my head. It sounds like yours is different than mine.
How many inches is your truck lowered (front/rear)? Spindles and blocks? Cut springs?
3 up front, 4 in the rear. Drop spindles up front, blocks in the rear.
im looking at buying a 1998 s10 and it has a fuel pump issue do you think that this is a common problem for s10's
I’ve heard many people say they’ve had to replace them. However, I will say this: if you’re buying a 1998 anything, that thing is 20 years old. You’re going to have to work on it...
I’ve got a 99 s10 and I’ve replaced the injectors and fuel pump.
They’re not terribly hard jobs to do!
My pump wasn't bad but the sender was doing the bounce thing. I'd say it should be an expected repair at some point. I had a pump go out on a 1999 Ford Contour as well.
Yep sure is
Where’s the door handles tho?
Followed everything on my 2002 S10
Forgot to mention gas line clips from original need to go on new... otherwise thanks bro
So you removed all bed bolts or just a few?
I think there are 6 bolts total. I removed all the the last two in the rear. I just loosened those, and tilted the bed up.
Are u willing to call me I am doing this on my own to jus have some questions because I don't have a big jack
Did you lower or cut your coils I like how she sitting
2" drop spindles in the front, 3" blocks in the rear. eBay kit.
And thank you!
I too couldn't believe what I saw and had to back up the video...where is the fire extinguisher??? Drop and Roll.... run fast Jedi Knight...
Hey I can't seem to get the front driver side bolt to come loose, any suggestions?
I’d try some penetrating lube. Let it sit for a bit. You can’t really use heat on that one, as I’m assuming you’re trying to loosen the body mount bolts? Those mounts are rubber, heat will destroy it.
Well that's perfectly safe
Was that a cigar next to the fuel cap?? Guess safety first is not a priority here
this is the easy way but the bed isn't that heavy most men could lift it no need for jack
Harness codes for fuel pump????
Florida truck next time do a truck from Ohio
Oh boy! Yeah, that’s probably less fun!
its much better to just take the box all the way off the truck ,,,, you will need to get at the pump so you can push it down ,,,i just did this ,,,, and you will need a impact gun to get the bed bolts off because they are very rusty and you may break some of them
I had no problem getting them loose. And if you think it's better to take off the whole bed, that would definitely give you more room to work. But it was just me working on it. you need at least two people to pull the bed.
I think your way is much better. Getting the tail lights detached is just another obstacle with more dirt falling. Thanks for the Video..@@CliffsHowTo
what year is your truck?
1998
GM makes good engines and overall build quality on the trucks, but their fuel pumps are garbage
Only difference in my technique is I have marijuana in my cigar
Nice! That’s still federally illegal, and I work for the DOD… so I can’t partake!
CIGAR & GAS0LINE ?
Yeah buddy!!
Anyone else notice theres no door handles?
Hmmmmm. Never noticed!
Cliff's How To Channel where were the door handles
#StoagieAtTheGasTank lol
I would just have dropped the tank....just a couple of straps.
Bed is easier with less mess and struggle. Fuel is heavy.
Dummy straps on gas caps are for dummies.....
dropping the fuel tank is much easier.
Micheal Scott not as easy as doing the dump truck, its way easier
where's your how-to video on "drop the fuel tank" method? link please - thanks
Fewer steps maybe but no, not easier.
So...dropping the gas tank is harder than all that?...get real.
With a full tank of gas and a lowered truck, I’d say so... just loosen two bolts and pull out two bolts. Raise the bed. Easy.
Could use a motor hoist with a strap going through the front hooks in the bed , alot easier and safer than a floor jack. Good video though...
I have a chain hoist on my garage door opening header. I just backed under it and use hoist lift it. I lifted rear with engine hoist.
