  • It is time for my Yamaha XJ6 to get its Yearly MOT. In this video I cover all the checks I do before taking the bike for its MOT test.
If you do your mechanical checks a few weeks before the MOT is due, you have a good chance of catching any issues that would lead to a fail.
This is not a comprehensive list and should only be used as additional information about how I do my checks.

My bike failed last year on lights and horn. Repair bill was quoted at £375 plus a retest. I took it home, gave a few squirts of WD40 into the electric contacts, and took it back half an hour later for a pass certificate. They don't call him Robbing Ronnie for nothing.

Thanks Spicy. As someone who just move to the UK and was hasty in getting a cheap bike I have 2 questions before I take it in next month.
    1. Would a cracked but complete indicator lens fail?
    2. Are instrument backlights a requirement to work or is it a case of, if it's there, it should be working?

Most MOT testers are quite fair. Garage i use are very thorough, but the guy who does the Bike MOT's is a biker himself, so little fussy things which can be sorted in a matter of minutes he will not fail you for. Things like LED flashing too quick, slightly too slack chain. Things which can be sorted in minutes. Sometimes he will let you use his tools and sort it there and then
Like he said to me last time, as long as you know what needs to be working to ensure safety and use a bit of common sense, and you maintain the bike, look after it, and replace worn consumables when required/below legal limits etc, you should not really fail a bike MOT. If you know your tyre is below the limit, or your discs are worn, or pads etc. Why would you book an MOT?
    Which is a fair point
Said he can tell from a single MOT inspection whether someone maintains their bike.

spicy110 we do have safety inspections, due any time the license needs renewed. Pretty much the same things to look for, except the garages that do inspections will just check lights and horn and that’s it. Since they don’t make any money from inspections, they want to hurry up and get them out of the way.

I have a GP1 Exhaust With baffle removed, loud as fuck. But never put the baffle back in for MOT and always passed. Thankfully every MOT tester I have encountered has never failed me for noise and I feel like that's the norm for most testers. But I suggest sticking it in at your first time at a particular tester.

My MoT tester told me I had to have indicators if I had headlights on my Moto Guzzi, so many testers interpret the rules differently, it does get a bit confusing at times. Don't forget the indicators need to be spaced apart a certain amount if they are aftermarket! :-)
    Really helpful vid this :-)

    • @rickyevans3845
      @rickyevans3845 4 роки тому

If there is indicators on the bike they have to work, if there arent, he just puts "not tested/not seen" on report (also have to take the indicator switch out, i believe). Or, you can simply put tape over them. Although i did hear once that bikes which were first registered after 1986, MUST have indicators. Anything first registered before 86... the above applies.
But of course, you really really should have indicators on a bike, id make it a legal requirement. Reason why all manufacturers install them out of the factory

We’re not allowed to use a calliper on the discs during mot, also not allowed to take any covers off or remove anything that can’t just be taken off, so theoretically you could have a leaky shock, and cable tie a cover to it and we can’t check it 😂

Yes, I think you can as you do not need indicators for the mot, however, if they are fitted they must be working. So if you just had rear ones and none fitted to the front that would comply with mot. However I would say you want them! On side roads and front on that is the only way people know where you are going, Unless you really are going to do all the hand signals.

I have yet to take the CBT but have a 125 that I got to repair and use (videos will be on my channel eventually). The mot manual here www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-motorcycles says this about reflectors :"Motorcycles must have one red reflector aligned to the longitudinal centre line and positioned to reflect squarely to the rear...Reflective tape is not an acceptable substitute for a rear reflector". So I would be interested to know if just a small sticker on the number plate is a pass. Thanks for the good videos.

Damn, they really go through the wringer with that thing, they check everything. I live in California and there's no checks at all for bikes, emissions, safety, etc., nothing. I have lived in states though that have a yearly safety and/or emissions inspection, but I've never heard of one as comprehensive as this. It's usually like, brakes look good & work? Tires look good? Lights all work? Ship it!
It's good for safety, though, nothing here is unreasonable, but seems like there may be little things that can get ya.
