A little bit late on my response, but I believe the reason was they didn't want to complicate the online multiplayer with all the costumes. I would rather have a more confusing multiplayer than lose all of these costumes. I wish they added more as well.

Man, I really miss these things. They were pretty much playable characters, allowing you to play as anyone you desire. And they allowed for huge creativity opportunities with makers designing whole levels around these characters. I don’t get why they decided to drop it in Mario Maker 2 when they brought back Sm4sh’s Amiibo support in Ultimate. I really wish Nintendo did more stuff like this with Amiibo. It gives them more of a purpose to spice up the game other than just providing free items. And they came out in constant updates unlike 2 where they just dropped a couple updates and left it at that.
My guess is multiplayer. they’d have to create 4 sprite variations for most of the skins and would be around 600 sprites, animations and etc they’d have to do
