Along with Secretariat and Eclipse, this is one of the horses I would've loved see run live. He should've ran in the Kentucky Derby, so America would have 12 Triple Crown winners.
Thoroughbred breeders should start breeding sturdy builds and strong legs like Secretariat, Man o' War and all those old time great horses had. Too many breakdowns on tracks these days..

great video..I find it touching that Man O' War's faithful groom, Will Harbut, died about 30 days before Man O' War died; some say from a broken heart. Truly, Man O'War "wuz da mostest hoss" as Will used to say...
Man O' War....truly "he wuz da mostest hoss". I find it touching that Man O' War died about 30 days after his faithful groom, Will Harbut, who uttered those words, died..some say Man O' War died of a broken heart...

There was article in the Blood Horse many years ago. I can't remember the jockey's name, but he had seen all the horses from Man o' War to Secretartiat and beyond. He stated, 'Man o' War was, without question, the greatest horse I have ever seen".

Secretariat, Seabiscuit, Phar Lap and all the other champion Thoroughbred or Quarter horses were definitely fast, but I personally think Man O War could of out ran them all. He was like the foundation of all thoroughbred race horses.
There will never be another like him.

I have a three year old registered Quarterhorse related to Man O War, I have had 4 trainers attempt to train him. I have pulled him early each time, as I did not feel the trainers were relating well with him. My gelding is an amazing horse.

For many people who know nothing about horse racing, all you have to do is mention the name Man o' War,and they will know exactly who he was. He was an American icon. He was also a very influencial sire(contrary to some who critized Riddle for keeping him a private Stallion),Man o" War's blood is still instrumental in the modern Tb. That along with his race record makes him a true TB God.

I grew up in Eastern Oregon on the back of an Appaloosa. Magnificent beings. They are still highly prized by the Cayuse, Umatillia, and of course the Niimíipu (Nez Perce for the uneducated). God's gift to humanity was the horse.

Pt.2 - "In my opinion the greatest of them all was Man o' War. I rode Upset when he beat Man o' War, the only time Big Red was licked. I laid a trap for him as he came up on the inside and I got him in a pocket. The rules forbid that today. If I had let him out of the pocket he would have won by six lengths."

Them were the days when horse racing was great. What an animal this horse was! He is totally beautiful also. Greatest of all time? Possibly. There are so many perfect equine heroes. They all want to make you shed a tear. A few other examples of great horses are Carbine, Ribot and Phar Lap. Like Man O' War, no one can doubt their greatness.

I just discovered that every one of my 7 horses has this amazing stallion within their bloodlines. He's in our broodmare who started our herd, and three of her foals. Two of her "grand" foals, one of them being our newest colt who has Man O' War on both sides, and then also my Oldenburg that is completely unrelated to our Quarter Horses. Thanks for sharing this video so his greatness may be acknowledged by all. :)

I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE SECRETARIAT AND MAN O WAR COMPETE, I THINK HALF THE TIME MAN O WAR WOULD HAVE WON AND HALF THE TIME SECRETARIAT WOULD HAVE WON. MAN O WAR IS FOREVER REGARDED AS ONE OF THE GREATS, BUT SECRETARIAT BEAT ALL OF MAN O WAR'S TIMES. SECRETARIAT IS GENETICALLY RELATED TO MAN O WAR ,BUT TO ME SECRETARIAT IS THE GREATEST WITH MAN O WAR A VERY CLOSE SECOND. TWO KINGS OF HORSERACING.

I don't know who the "greatest ever" was. Impossible to compare horses of different era's. Man o' War, War Admiral, Citation, Secretariat, etc... Who's to say who would have beat who on any given day? But I do know one thing. Man o' War is the most magnificent looking beast I ever seen.

@holybulz27 - Man o' War was primarily a frontrunner according to his PP's. A slow start can end up affecting frontrunners more than horses with other racing styles. Also, Upset was carrying 15 pounds less than Man o' War. Regardless, “Upset”, what an unintentionally prophetic name for a horse.

  • @WhiteCamry

One quibble: at 1:29 a horse who's not Man o'War (who had a star AND a stripe) nuzzles a jockey who's not wearing Sam Riddle's silks, yet we're supposed to believe that this is Man o'War.

It is pointless (although at times fun) to argue about who was better than who. Man o' War's impact was felt all over the world. He played a part in Britain finally abolishing the ridiculous Jersey Act. Which basically made almost all US TB's non pure bloods in the British stud book. They finally gave in when US and French breds(they used some US blood) were coming over and winning top races in Britain. Funny thing was that was why they did it the first place, they feared we would clean house.

Carly, what is this from? ESPN or something? I don't see any of those rare RACING MOW films that I thought ESPN had access to.
Also curious because some of this is misleading. It's safest to say MOW (and others) were left standing at the start in the Sanford, possibly backed up or skewed. Also, "older horses" is misleading as he only ever met Sir Barton once, the only elder. (He did win the JC Stakes for elder, but none entered the race.)

    • @SaraNightfire1
      @SaraNightfire1 Рік тому

When you introduce a horse to a saddle, bridle, and rider.
The term is unpopular due to its association with old cowboys (and being fair, many other types of riders), using very brutal methods of breaking in a horse, including starvation, lack of water, whipping, tying their legs together, and sitting on top of them while tied to break their spirit, and other types of abuse.
It's also forgotten that the trainer who backed him (which is more appropriate now) had trained a lot of horses, including the Man O’War line, and knew if nothing else that abusing the horse would not work, also it would probably kill someone because horses like that just wait for revenge.
He was also an expensive purchase (he was the fifth highest price at the auction), and not advisable to cause abuse.
Most people like to say he was badly treated to cover the fact he just was extremely difficult to handle and hated the tack. He took it from his grandfather and passed the genes to his children.
One famous tale is that one of his sons stomped a groom to death as a foal.
