Great stuff, going to buy one of these new Pioneer head units for my older Honda next week, glad they mentioned the new ones and I found this review, looks amazing!
Yeah some people HAVE NO IDEA they can use a LOT of APPS thru Bluetooth and never need to buy a new expensive stereo. Pandora and Slacker Radio for instance, Pandora while Bluetooth Connected to a Ford Mustang as an example, you can use the Radios buttons to skip tracks, etc.. My Galaxy Phone always connected automagically anytime I got inside my 2012 Focus. I know Slacker Radio on Android also has a Ford Sync feature in the settings menu. The iOS and Windows Phone versions do not.
hi! i need a help, my carplay no connect , the radio show "incompatible USB" ... i tried upgrade firmware, i tried connected with other cables original, and others iphones and also select the USB mode on the radio and nothing .... you can helpme? I bought the radio a few days a go ..
I have 4 questions: 1) Does the radio use the built in GPS for the maps app if the phone has no signal? e.g. While driving outside your country and not having roaming signal. 2) Can you make the app Waze GPS work in it? 3) Does the phone cable connect to a usb port or is it built into the radio? Can I connect an older iphone 4s with the older cable/connector? 4) Does the radio have mixtrax and subwoofer output?
I bought a car with the NEX4100 unit installed. It doesn't light up when I plug in my iphone 12. Is it too new? It just shows it as an ipod or basic music device.
Your iPhone 12 should work great for Apple CarPlay, however it needs to be plugged into the proper USB port. The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX has 2 USB inputs on the back of the in-dash receiver. Apple CarPlay will work on USB input 1 only. Apple CarPlay will not work on USB input 2. You can see this demonstrated in this Pioneer How To video: ua-cam.com/video/g5juaKNXr90/v-deo.html When you plug in your phone does it show up on USB 2? It's may be possible USB port 1 is not connected with a USB extension cable. Or the USB port 1 connection is in the glove box or center console. Please be sure to install the latest firmware for your Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. You can find it here: www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/NEX/AVH-4100NEX#downloads You can download a copy of the owner's manual here: www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/NEX/AVH-4100NEX#manuals You can find a full playlist of How To videos from Pioneer about NEX in-dash receivers here: ua-cam.com/video/6VY10uChNTI/v-deo.html And you can find more videos on Pioneer's UA-cam Channel here: ua-cam.com/users/pioneerelectronics
So if I want to use CarPlay on my NEX radio, I have to loose AppRadio mode and all the apps I use as well as HDMI because I can't even use the Digital AV adapter without getting an error code. Why has Pioneer bailed on AppRadio mode? I've sold many NEX radios because of CarPlay support, I have a feeling a lot of those customers are going to be dissapointed when we update their radios. Hopefully, you will come up with a solution for people to use both and not have to switch cables and input modes.
I agree. We will have to now have two wires hanging out of our dashboard. One for CarPlan and the other for AppRadio. I do like to watch podcasts when I am parked. Just an inconvenience.
Hi, I would like to know if there is any updates coming soon to pioneer avh-x8500bt that will work with Apple CarPlay... The only update available is one that the date is 2013. tks
Hi , i would like to buy AVIC 8100 NEX for my Toyota Camry 2013 Se , the only concern i had is that , where can i get the Dash board kit , when i saw the video you have different dash board kit ,like in a mat finishing, can you please send me the link so i can have done soon ,Thanks !
i need to know a major overlooked feature.. i listen to audio books.. and holding the fast forward button for 10 minutes to get 3 hours in is brutal.. will the scrub feature work on a audio file that is downloading on the phone ?
Not really sure why people want wireless carplay. Blutooth is going to eat your battery anyways, so you're going to want to plug it in, so...... you're back to wired carplay. Maybe when apple offers wireless charging I'd want that and a charging mat like the civic touring has.
Pioneer, how often is the NEX system using data? Is it only when data apps are being using or is it constantly using data through the map system at all times?
USB always provides the best connection. Lag free playback if you are watching a youtube video on your phone while parked and hearing the audio in the car. You can NOT play the video on the unit itself.
As text messages have become such a big part of our lives and such a danger on the road i think this area could be further improved. Honestly the only people i need or want to respond to while I'm driving are people I'm meeting up with. For that reason it would be nice to have the sender automatically announced to me with the option for the message to be read. Afterwards 3 reply options seem reasonable (auto reply, call, and send location) this seems the best way imo to keep people from feeling obligated to look at the headunit or the phone
You can use Drive Mode on a lot of phones now days, where you select not to have notifications like TXT messages. There was a huge article this last week about how Siri is the most annoying while driving system they said not very safe to use and drive at the same time. Moto X 2014 Driving Mode you can tell it to not notify you of text messages when your in the car. My Windows Phone I can set it to automatically send a text to the person saying "I'm Driving, will text you later" so i do not get text messages coming in.
TekReview's there a certainly a lot of times where text messages can be ignored while driving but there are times when you need to communicate with someone, most likely because your meeting up with them. Either they're late or your late or one of you has to cancel, etc. Most of the time they are communicating with you through text. During those instances it is still possible to have a safe way to be notified of the sender and the message, along with a simple way to reply to them with minimal interaction.
Watch Cnet video shows how to change your iOS settings so that WAZE is used whenever you want to navigate instead of Google or Apple Maps. It should in theory default to the app you want to use. I would suggest going to a Kiosk where you can see this in action like at a Car Toys on the West Coast. With the iPhone 6 Plus you could just get a Cel Phone mount for your windshield or Vent's on the dash and use the screen on that to do everything without spending a ton on a new stereo.
Exactly and what Mercedes does not have a voice button on steering wheel controls now days. You can control Pandora and Slacker Radio (Slacker Android version has a Ford Sync option in the settings) via Bluetooth and even use your own radio's buttons to skip tracks. There are videos of 2011 Ford Mustangs with Bluetooth running Pandora and the guy uses his radios track buttons to skip back and forth without touching the phone.
For pioneer receivers that work with Spotify on Android check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/kN5npcZWWsw/v-deo.html and this video: ua-cam.com/video/kpKYks-17gM/v-deo.html
What is the model number of your Pioneer in-dash receiver? Are you sure the receiver is compatible with Apple CarPlay? Are you plugging your phone directly into the in-dash receiver? Or are you plugging into an existing vehicle USN port? You can learn more about using Apple CarPlay in this How To video from Pioneer: ua-cam.com/video/_P3_aPDLK2E/v-deo.html and you can find more videos on Pioneer's UA-cam Channel here: ua-cam.com/users/pioneerelectronics
I know it's not meant to be used this way, but can the user actually use the phone while it is connected and in active CarPlay session, or is the screen locked? I mean, can the user initiate a call from the phone itself while it is connected?
kmikesmart Does it work while already playing a song? I have a 2012 Focus and I have no idea where the microphone is installed but it never has a problem hearing me when I press VOICE button on my steering wheel it stops music. So how would it work if it was already playing music can it still hear you saying HEY SIRI.
depends... a lot if you pay someone to do it if you do it yourself you need a dash kit, a steering wheel interface, and a wiring harness... probably 200$ plus the unit if you pay someone expect to pay about 300-500 plus the unit
Is it possible to use an app on the iPhone and Carplay at the same time ? For example, using iCoyote or an app with real speed on the iphone screen and Maps on Carplay (on Pioneer ?)
If it multi tasks you SHOULD be able to play music and at the same time see WAZE on the screen, if they have this as a Maps Option like on my IPod I choose which MAPS to use while Navigating. There is a tutorial on Cnet showing you how to set Waze as your NAV option on your iPhone instead of Google Maps or Apple Maps in the Settings screens.
I would buy this if I would not have to plug my phone to the cable. And if Siri it would be controllable with "Hey Siri". Formthe moment, Android has a better implementation even if I have an Iphone.
No. The AVIC-F130BT was produced back in 2009-2010. This was several years before Apple introduced Apple CarPlay. Pioneer makes many different receivers that work with Apple CarPlay. Please consider the Pioneer DMH-W4660NEX seen here: ua-cam.com/video/B2TTfJUD-es/v-deo.html You can find more videos on Pioneer's UA-cam Channel here: ua-cam.com/users/pioneerelectronics
Are you using Apple CarPlay to access Siri on your Pioneer AVH-3400NEX? Yes, Amazon Music works with Apple CarPlay. Be sure to have the latest version of Amazon Music on your iPhone and it the icon will appear on the CarPlay screen. Check Cnet there is a tutorial video to tell it what MAPS app you want to use when Navigating on any iOS device. I used to use a app called SPEAK AND DRIVE it lets you choose what you wish to use, I chose WAZE to have it navigate. If it lets you choose a different MAPS APP then you should have no problem seeing that instead of Apple Maps on the screen. Check at a store where the guy can show you the thing actually working with another MAPS APP.
TekReview's well I use waze too and some cars devices allow to use that app, but it would have been nice to have my maps on the same apple interface rather than moving out of apple to the regular system. Hopefully waze is allowed as a 3rd party app on carplay soon
+Blazerelf Did you get Waze to work on the radio? Does it work when your phone's internet connection and signal is lost? Does the radio use it's built in GPS for the navigation when you're outside the country and have no roaming?
Sebastián Frerk I use Here Drive it downloads maps and you don't need a Carrier Signal to use the app. Works great. Best Maps App I have used on ANY device I own.
There is actually a BOX you can connect to a factory radio that lets you use your iPHONE without spending hundreds on a new car stereo. It let you use the VOICE button on your steering wheel to TALK to your Phone that is plugged into the USB connector or if you have the iPhone paired via Bluetooth.
So his Mercedes does not have steering wheel control buttons? What about 2012+ Focus with steering wheel voice controls. No mention of using our current Ford Sync along with this. I know apps like Slacker Radio and Pandora already work with Bluetooth, even Ford Mustangs using the radios own buttons to skip tracks in Pandora. Slacker Radio only has Ford Sync setting on ANDROID not on iOS or Windows Phone, I do not know why. Most Apps can use Bluetooth and your current steering wheel controls. Buying a whole new system just to do things people already can do with Bluetooth but do not know that, seems a waste of money to me. Where is the option to press VOICE on a wheel and get Siri to answer without touching a screen. Car Voice should use the steering buttons not reaching for a Head Unit's screen.
What if you look at the wheel I think this was a Mercedes not a Camry. Camry just now added wireless charging plate for your phone but anybody can buy those Cupholder wireless chargers for your center console cheap.
If you watched the ideo and saw the logo on the steering wheel. Mercedes does not ALWAYS make decent cars. I am half German, they have BAD sales lately which is why they started to sell the $29k USD CLA car!
I have the AVH-4000NEX and so far, in my opinion, it is a thousand giant steps backwards from my AVH-P4000DVD. These new units are junk. It's almost as if they didn't bother testing the new software before they released them for sale. With my old radio, I could leave my iPod plugged in and still switch to bluetooth audio with no issues, and bluetooth calling worked at all times. Now, I have to make sure all USB ports are empty before bluetooth functions will work. That's pathetic Pioneer. There is no logical reason for that. It's like saying I have to unplug the antenna for the radio before bluetooth will work. Even when I turn off bluetooth on the radio and the phone, the iPod disconnects itself every now and then for no reason. It won't reconnect unless I remove the plug and plug it back in. To top it all off, now my bluetooth for phone calls decided to stop working for no reason. And why does it take so long to update AppRadio and the apps to work with the new iPhones and the current iOS? There should be a civil lawsuit filed against Pioneer for ripping people off with these crappy radios. Don't bother with customer support. They have no idea what they are talking about and when you call them on it they hang up on you.

There are 3 issues here: 1 - home button is on left hand side (too far for right hand drivers, UK, AUS etc) 2 - Siri hardly ever recognises non-USA voices instead of calling my wife, it'll call johns other side of world) 3 - Maps hardly ever work in UK or AUS! Open minded and widen your global market to succeed internationally
It PROBABLY does work through Bluetooth they just never bothered to SHOW this in the video. There is also a BOX you can get to use your FACTORY RADIO with an iPhone and use it with your cars Voice button on the steering wheel and it works with a USB plug or through Bluetooth. People just need to educate themselves on what products are already out there. There is even a company that will let you use your Pioneer/Kenwood Deck you already have for a screen, a BOX plugs into the back and it takes over your Head Unit with a DIFFERENT operating system which is basically what Apple Car Play is doing.
Are y'all really that lazy? Sheesh. I like charging my phone while I drive plus having it on the screen is a lot less dangerous. bluetooth also eats your battery

Jared Thomson really good point my friend
Pioneer, how often is the NEX system using data? Is it only when data apps are being using or is it constantly using data through the map system at all times?
What is the best way to connect an iPhone to the 6100NEX? USB, USB/HDMI, Bluetooth?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?
USB always provides the best connection. Lag free playback if you are watching a youtube video on your phone while parked and hearing the audio in the car. You can NOT play the video on the unit itself.

Some new phones like the Note 4 do let you pick a group of people to receive notifications from but I do not know if it applies to the Driving mode.
I wish they had a optional way to download firmware of carplay or android auto to other have units like avh-x4700bs and more units.

Carplay is Apple specific. In competition Google has Android Auto
And you can buy Android Stereos from China for the last few years. Check em out sometime. They even play DVDs
hmm what about email? Too much of a driving distraction? Need more app support
The only problem is that Siri doesn’t work too well without an American accent.
Still having issues
It's a Toyota Camry, what do you expect?
What if you look at the wheel I think this was a Mercedes not a Camry. Camry just now added wireless charging plate for your phone but anybody can buy those Cupholder wireless chargers for your center console cheap.

the buttons are not high quality, so it cant be a merc.
If you watched the ideo and saw the logo on the steering wheel. Mercedes does not ALWAYS make decent cars. I am half German, they have BAD sales lately which is why they started to sell the $29k USD CLA car!

yes but its a toyota logo...not mercedes
I just hate the way it looks in that car makes me extremely nervous to buy one for that much money just to look like it doesn't belong

There are 3 issues here:
1 - home button is on left hand side (too far for right hand drivers, UK, AUS etc)
2 - Siri hardly ever recognises non-USA voices instead of calling my wife, it'll call johns other side of world)
3 - Maps hardly ever work in UK or AUS!

Apple.... you have to plug in your phone in order for this to work? STUPID. Why can't it work through bluetooth?
It PROBABLY does work through Bluetooth they just never bothered to SHOW this in the video. There is also a BOX you can get to use your FACTORY RADIO with an iPhone and use it with your cars Voice button on the steering wheel and it works with a USB plug or through Bluetooth. People just need to educate themselves on what products are already out there. There is even a company that will let you use your Pioneer/Kenwood Deck you already have for a screen, a BOX plugs into the back and it takes over your Head Unit with a DIFFERENT operating system which is basically what Apple Car Play is doing.
You can connect to bluetooth, however I prefer to plug in my phone so that it gets charged up. Car time is a good opportunity to charge the phone :)
Are y'all really that lazy? Sheesh. I like charging my phone while I drive plus having it on the screen is a lot less dangerous. bluetooth also eats your battery
TekReviews im so late but can you use bluetooth for the apple carplay?
Text messages are only spoken ? I can’t read them ?
