I’m a retired elementary school teacher and was in my happy place when the desks were covered in paper, scissors, and glue. I can tell you are in your happy place as you juggled fabric, templates, and rotary cutter. It is fun watching you create, Jenny! Thank you for teaching us how to create with fabric! And encouraging us to “make it ours.”
OOOOoooo while you were sewing and you made the comment that your background could be lighter.... I immediately thought kitchen.... cookbooks with a mixer, maybe a can opener and utensils( spoons, spatula, cutting knives) Or even sewing with notions and sewing machine and iron. Thanks for the ideas!
Now that I watched this Tutorial at least 6 times, it is timeto make a bookcase quilt. I think I will donate it to an elementary school or a Library and of course with READ on the top shelf.Thsnk-You Jenny--Nancy -Duluth,Mn.
📖📓📗📕📖🌺 Hey!! I don't know who reads these or IF anyone does, but I really enjoyed this. It doesn't feel so rushed like a lot of them do. You don't lollygag, but it doesn't feel like you are trying to get it done in under 10 minutes, either! 😂😂😂 I am SO GLAD you did this!! I've been so curious how to do it! You made it so simple! THANK YOU!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love this tutorial. I just made a quilt with grandmothers clothes as the books and am giving it as a gift to my daughter who used to share books with her grandmother.
Love it! I am going to make it reflect our personal library and bust part of my stash at the same time. Sewing books will be reflected by sewing theme fabrics, gardening books will be done with plant and flower fabrics. Geography will be reflected with fabric showing hills or mountains or farms or places or place names. Astronomy will have fabrics with stars, the moon, and planets. And so forth. And of course there will be a cat or two! Thanks so much! Jenny is always such a great inspiration!
I have a friend who is a librarian. I've wanted to make her a quilt for a while with books -- and I can now, using my embroidery machine, put titles on the books -- of banned books! Her personal anathema!
Ha! I made a much more complicated bookshelf making it unique to me by putting a coffee pot and cups, a vase with many different flowers which I did a bit of embroidery on, a framed photo of my husband and I with my parents, my beloved cat (who is now no longer with us), and a clock showing the exact time I was born. I also used some fluffy pink fabrics to make a small flamingo as that word is in the title of the company that I love working for. Also, on the books I sewed on words and/or phrases which I cut from selvedges. (Never throw selvedges away if they have writing on!). I love umbrellas so I have a row of books with selvedges sewn onto them that say Parasols, Splish Splash, Rain, Sunshine in the Rain, etc. It took years to find fabrics with these selvedges! There are sew many things you can do to personalise your quilt. ‘Funny’ that Jenny made the word Read for hers as that was my maiden name and with my initial I couldn’t really escape away from making a bookcase quilt!! Jenny’s quilt is super easy and effective so do give it a go.
Thank you! Btw, I didn’t mean my first sentence to sound like I was putting Jenny’s quilt down in any way. I meant that I wish I could have seen her version before I made mine which took me five months (part-time) to make. My initial is ‘I’, so I Read. Alas, I don’t think I can put a photo on here but if I could, I wouldn’t know how to. x
As soon as I saw the appliqué flower from a Kaffe fabric I knew that these ideas were exactly what I needed to make a bookcase quilt for my chair. Just perfect!
Do you ever add sashing/wood frame to each 12.5 block? Makes the bookcase look like it has cubicles, like some have? Perhaps a teddy bear? Small car? Etc. on the shelves?? Guess I’m adding work. Lol. I really love your tutorials. I hope to.make a small bookcase and embroider "book" names of books my daughter has published. Should be fun - if I ever have time between projects! Lol
Will I ever get as fast as you? LOL..That is such a thing of beauty and I read Historic Romances so I could embroider on the spine "Romance", "Mystery", "Intrigue", etc. This is my favorite project of ALL TIME. Thank You Jenny for sharing it & you are right in that it is very customizable.👍💌
This is a very emotional tutorial for me. I wanted to make a ''bookcase something'' for a long time, you nailed it right on MY head...I don't know if you realize how much you touch people with your Craft. Thank you Jenny and the team at MSQC.
Thank you for this video! I'm looking to make a bookshelf quilt for my fiance and I but was doughting my ability to do so. You've made it so approachable for me!!
I love, love, love this bookcase idea & have wanted to make one but I wish there were a pattern for a smaller wall quilt bookcase. (I’m not creative enough to figure out how to do that myself. I need a pattern.). 🙂 Thank you, Jenny, for your dedication & sharing your skills to us & to your family.
Gorgeous quilt! I wondered to myself "what would I put on my bookshelves?" I looked at one in the room and realized I have family pictures on all of my bookshelves. Wouldn't it be cool to print a picture onto fabric and make a little frame around it and add it to your bookshelf? Especially if you were gifting the quilt you could make the picture personal to the recipient! Such fun ideas!
I did this for my sister-in-law’s quilt in 2019. My sister helped me a bit by printing 2 photos onto fabric for me. My sister-in-law was a librarian, and I gave her the quilt when she retired. The book case shelves were 3 different heights and I used 3 different patterns. Loads of fun to do.
Okay. So I've decided. To make this gorgeous quilt, as my very first quilt project. Hope I can do this. Because I have fallen in love with it. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work here. Stay blessed
This video is truly at God-send! I agreed to make a book case quilt for a family member without doing any research (how hard can it be?) . Then I found myself in over my head. I discovered this video and it saved my bacon. Thank you Jenny!
Lovely. Simply lovely. Going to start this weekend. I have plenty of scraps. I like Julie idea with personal picture 😃. I need to make at least 8 quilts. Thanks.. Chicago quilt mom
I just got this pattern, I'm so excited. I can't wait to get to make it! I also have the letters 🔤! Im going to make one for my grandson who loves to read. Thanks Jenny, You, once again have given me a gift of joy and excitement to make something fun! 🎉 I just am so grateful for your teaching and enthusiasm. Huggles and Prayers, 🤗🪡✂️🧵🍀💖🙏🤟🦓🌞Liz in Northern California 😊
This quilt speaks to my soul. The vase on the third shelf down, wouldn't it be cute if the top was white. It would look like a tissue box. A must for a good book. Some of my favorite authors make me laugh so hard my eyes tear up.
My sister made this quilt for her daughter for Christmas (she hasn't seen it yet). Thanks for the suggestion about the tissue box. My contribution was a flower vase but with bigger flowers on stems and a tissue box with white tissues coming out of it. Everyone at the quilt shop where sister quilted it was completely enchanted by the tissue box! Thanks again for the suggestion.
Thank you for this tutorial and pattern. It was incredibly easy after watching your video. I just gifted a finished quilt to my granddaughter who is an author and who has a variety of interests. Her quilt is customized and includes photos of covers of some of her books. It also has fabrics & appliques representing her interests. Thank you again.
I have some fabrics that have been folded on an open shelf for years. If there is sun damage, the salvageable parts could become books. I would gave my 2 cats on shelves. I like the idea someone commented to print a photo. How do the current printable fabr iui c products hold up to many washings? Many years ago I printed a label in black with color accents. .the black is fine, the color faded or is gone.
Absolutely love this quilt. Just figured I need to add at least another 10 years to my "Life Expectancy" if Jenny keeps coming up with all those beautiful quilt patterns. Might have to add some family pictures, my Grandchildren and Fur-Babies.
Jenny, I am so glad you did this tutorial. My husband's son is a writer and I have wanted to make him a quilt just like this. Thank you so much. Not sure if I will get it done for Christmas.....LOL, but I will send a picture when it is done. I love all the ideas that people have added to their bookcase quilts. Thanks, everyone.
This is so lovely. There are so many different pattern to create a bookshelf quilt - this is a wonderful and easy way to do it and showcase beloveld fabrics. And everyone has plenty of opportunities for little "knick-knacks" like vases with flowers, frames, boxes, fotos, calendars ... . Everyone can make it as unique as one will. Thanks to your "how to make it easy" instruction ♥️.
It would also be a great FAMILY HERITAGE quilt. You could embroider the names of the families & dates, etc. on the spines of the books. This is awesome Jenny!
As always, you broke this quilt down into a workable form for me! I've been pondering making one and now I have an approach that'll work! Thank you so much!
Loved this library quilt. Other ideas could be photo frames with either printed family pics or scenic fabric pics, a clock... Lots of ideas running thru my head. Thanks Jenny
I think this quilt is one of the cleverest, most versatile quilts you've ever conceived, Jenny! As you pointed out, you can personalize it to your heart's content. I can see using other applique shapes here and there and maybe adding a tail to the cat, as well. Absolutely fabulous!
Hello jenny I have aquilt in my. In head for books I have been saving selvages for for years hoping to a book shelf quite soon now I know a simple way - thank you so much for showing me how
I wabt to thank you for your time. Even for the kitty block. Not all of us has seen that being dine. I am glad you took the time to show us. Thank you again. I kove your books.
The kitty is an absolute "must" for the book shelf! Cats love their personal spaces! I'd dearly love to try making this quilt someday. Thank you so much for the awesome tutorial! 😺💕🐾
Love, love this quilt, it’s on my priority list as we speak.. love how your directions are not overwhelming. Thank you so much from Innisfil Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
This is perfect for me! My daughter did a bookcase quilt in foundation piecing. It's not a quilt. It's a work of art. This is more my speed. And i won't be afraid to use it. Thanks Jenny!
I made my daughter a Harry Potter bookshelf quilt. She loves it! My infant granddaughter has discovered that the seams feel different as she touches it. Jenny's version looks much quicker than the paper pieced one but it's just adorable.
I have wanted to make this quilt for over 5 years and I told myself, not until Jenny does a pattern makeover and a tutorial. Now it all makes sense and I'm so excited to get this done. I'm going to use my embroidery machine to put titles on some of the spines. Can't wait. Also, love the cats in the bookcase! Thank you, Jenny and your team at MSQC!!
I made one of these for my brother, and embroidered his favorite book titles onto some of the strips. On others, I made up titles based on our childhood memories, while others strips I left blank. It was such a fun project, and he loves his quilt! He has even added a few titles of his own.
Hi Jenny - it’s Marijke here. You just gave me a great idea for my best friend’s birthday present this year. I’m going to get some family photos so I can add some picture frames to the quilt. I’ve made a smaller similar quilt before but your technique looks so much more fun. Thank you!
I have planned one too, and to personalize it a little more, I am going to embroider favorite book titles in the binding of some of the books. I really like this tutorial. Thank you, Jenny. ❤️
I wish I had seen this about one month ago.. but I can work on what I have started and finish what I have started. I used strips from my stash and appliquéd sayings from the salvages to some of the books as titles and my Grand daughter wrote a short story in school so I appliquéd the name and year and her name on one.. I was wondering how to finish the top and bottom. Now I know.. thank you for “ just what I needed”… Mary from NS.💕
Oh Jenny I too have wanted to do this quilt , I saw a Harry Potter one at a quilt show that was stunning , I love a Particular book series i am going to do this quilt with. Thank You for all your time and fabulous teachings we really do think you and your entire family are a blessing , have a great birthday bash !
oh my...I've been wanting to do one of these. I think I'm going to have to add picture frames with family pictures in them. The possibilities...endless.
This is just beautiful!! I am a newbie quilter (less than a year) but your tutorial is so clear, I believe I can make this. I live in a very rural area and we have a lovely library, but it doesn't get a lot of "extras" from the County. I think this quilt would be a wonderful addition to hang on their wall. Thank you for this tutorial and I'm looking forward to more -- I subscribed today!! Julie
Julie, what a wonderful idea for your local library. Just encouraging you - I believe you can make this quilt! If the vase and cat blocks are too challenging, you can find many images on fabric with plain dark backgrounds and just use those. Happy sewing!
I haven’t even watched this yet, but I am so excited! I have been planning a bookcase quilt for my son, he was an English major and is an avid reader. So excited to have a Jenny explanation 🥳. Thank you MSQC!
I made a bookshelf quilt years ago for our library…it hangs proudly…I want to say…what a struggle to lean the books…there was a formula and it wasn’t easy. You made this so simple Jenny. Thank you. The word Read across the top is genius!
🥰. Oh. My Gosh. This is such a beautiful quilt. I as well always wanted to make a bookshelf quilt but never attempted until now. This is absolutely one that will be on the top of my list to make
We could also add a cactus plant from your other tutorial! So many ideas for the shelf! Thank you I love this for my husband who is an avid reader and I’m a teacher so it is perfect!

I see this as a wall hanging and leaving a small pocket on the vases to insert artificial flowers. I adore this quilt. 😁❤️
This is brilliant!

I have researched many bookcase quilts and yours is so much more attractive than anything else I have seen.
Jenny dear, there is no waste in quilting- we make crumbs from waste. I loved this tutorial, I love them all.

You can always just go 4 blocks across and less rows down. So 4 blocks at 12.5 “ across instead of 5 blocks across.

I’ve been waiting for this one. It would be cute to have the cat’s tail hanging down. The sky’s the limit. Thank you❣️
Great idea, and to expound on that ... A cat on every shelf! Including the top of the bookcase. If you have cats, you understand.

I think this is my FAVORITE QUILT you've ever done Jenny!! Perfect quilt gift for so many people in my life!!
This would also be a great way to use up scraps as you would have many different books. I love the idea of the cat and vases with flowers! Thanks 😊
You are an excellent teacher ,stay blessed.
I haven’t even watched this yet, but I am so excited! I have been planning a bookcase quilt for my son, he was an English major and is an avid reader. So excited to have a Jenny explanation 🥳. Thank you MSQC!
Thank you so much for this video. It’s something I’ve wanted to do and just couldn’t figure how. You make it all look so easy - and inspiring!
I made a bookshelf quilt years ago for our library…it hangs proudly…I want to say…what a struggle to lean the books…there was a formula and it wasn’t easy. You made this so simple Jenny. Thank you. The word Read across the top is genius!
Love this! My daughter Erin is a reading specialist in a middle school. She would love this!
This is beautiful. My sister is a Liberian I think she would love this.
Absolutely gorgeous xxxx
🥰. Oh. My Gosh. This is such a beautiful quilt. I as well always wanted to make a bookshelf quilt but never attempted until now. This is absolutely one that will be on the top of my list to make
Great scrap quilt.
Hi Jenny! This is something I've wanted to do for YEARS and have put it off for ever... Thank you for the inspiration as usual!
I’ve watched all your videos-some more than twice! I LOVE this quilt. What FUN!! Thank you for making me a “Finished is better than Perfect” girl 💕
Beautiful quilt with the books and the cat is a.perfect finishing touch. Thanks for sharing your video. 👍❤️😊
I have always wanted to make a book shelf quilt but didn't know how to even start! Now I know, thanks so much Jenny!
We could also add a cactus plant from your other tutorial! So many ideas for the shelf! Thank you I love this for my husband who is an avid reader and I’m a teacher so it is perfect!
Hi Jane
