I remember one time my lil bro recently put on Cod: Modern Warefare 2. He couldn't get on multiplayer so he decided to go on a private lobby by himself and Not gonna lie it was a cerebral experience walking in on him in an empty lobby with no one but his own happy childlike thoughts.

Ok, but Garry's Mod is also unnerving alone. Or any source game. A multiplayer map in single player feels like something out of a creepypasta. For example, take a bright map, like gm_construct. With friends it's fun, but alone feels unnerving.

I was doing the same thing in tf2. Just walking around, listening to the soundscape.
The sound design on the maps is really good, and you can only hear it if you play alone. For example on 2fort. Outside you can hear water, cows, wind blowing, but once you go down to the intel area, all you hear is this looped really deep bass sound and old computer noises. All the outside sounds fade away, and you suddenly get the feeling that someone's following you.

    • @Gramer05
      @Gramer05 3 роки тому +55

Well this actually very normal for me, to sit alone in the intel room or the right of the spawn room with my sentry of course while everyone is having fun in the middle. the feeling of being watched and followed is also normal i mean i don't know how long you played TF2 but there is an invisible, french, shape-shifting, murderer soo
Oh and if you don't have the sound of the sentry beeping or teleporter or dispenser, you can actually hear spy footstep when he is invisible/cloaked

I remember back in the day I played Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and I didn't have any internet connection and understood english really poorly. But as a stupid kid that couldn't even complete the first level out of curiosity I wanted to check out that "Versus mode". It had a cool ninja guy on the screen so I thought it must've been some additional content. I remember walking around as a spy, expecting someone, but I was all by myself on these maps and the pure map design which was intended to be dark and mysterious made is so much creepier. It was even worse when I switched roles to a mercenary. All these dark corners, open vents, rooftops, windows, holes in the ceiling - it all made me feel like someone is watching me all the time from these places and is just trying to scare me before finally jumping from the darkness and snapping my neck.

When I was 7 back in 2000, I've had a Half Life installed on my grandparent's PC and me and my cousins would play the game religiously. But, back then, the CD was not inserted because it belonged to another cousin who don't visit often.
So, what we got was a Half Life game without the ability to play the single player. But, we could play the LAN maps. Being the technologically blind kids we were (And my grandparents having no internet. My country's internet coverage was small at that time), whenever we play the LAN maps, it's just us running around the maps shooting at nothing.
The feeling of being alone in those maps were unnerving sometimes...like we felt like SOMETHING is stalking us or if there's a bot who'd suddenly appear. This situation happened the same when I played Counter Strike 1.6. Thinking the same logic applied to the game, I played one map, walking alone and shooting randomly, when suddenly I confronted a bot. The bot killed my character. I was so scared at that time. It came out of nowhere.

Source games are creepier because of how the games are always populated with npcs or players murdering each other
But the eerie feeling of booting up gmod and playing an empty roleplay map makes everything eerie considering how the maps are supposed to be populated with players and kid admins
Sometimes I expect someone is watching me or an npc would jump out and attack me.

Oh man, I got the biggest smile when I heard Star Wars BF2, and now I have a reason to tell this story, and boy is it a long one. Ever since this happened, I had it burned in my brain for no reason at all. But when I was playing some solo Galactic Conquest, I was the clone army fighting on Dagobah. It was a standard match, I remember the CIS using a troop bonus, putting me at a disadvantage. I knew I was in trouble when both the CIS and I had about 10 units left, and I was at low health. When the unit count got to around five for both of us, it was deathly silent, with the occasional blaster shot. The counter slowly dwindled down to 4, 3, 2. Then one. It was silent, with only the fauna to accompany me. I was on edge, looking around frantically to find that last droid. I was at low health, around half, so I decided to go to the top of the map, where Yoda's house was. I found that the med droid was destroyed, leaving me at half health, alone, and creeped out. The chirping of alien birds and whatever substitute crickets exist on Dagobah was deafening. Then, I hear a blaster. I jump and look to my right, and there is a Super Battle Droid standing there. I hear the iconic clone line about the supers. I panic fire in it's general direction, hitting it a couple times. Then before I knew what happened, "VICTORY" along with that classic brass solo. I never felt so freaked out before.
This story it dumb, I know. But at least I can say I single handedly won that game.
Tl;Dr: Basically the game ended on a 1v1 on a somewhat large map.

Surprised you never mentioned the frankly omnious multiplayer maps of Halo: Combat Evolved and to a lesser extent Halo 2. Although the maps are creepy on their own the real horror comes from the known lore of the actual game. Most of the multiplayer maps are built on existing Forerunner structures with the maps themselves having little lore about themselves making player have to fill in the gaps about why anything like this was even built in the first place. What's the purpose of a map like Gephyrophobia which is literally just a giant bridge hovering over a black, bottomless pit of death or Death Island which is like a giant religious temple on an inescapable island in the ocean. Then there's also maps like Blood Gulch, Beaver Creek, and Side Winder which are all maps built in these deep ravines or pits that are hard to get out of by foot. Why would they build bases here? And finally there's Hang Em High which is the most overtly creepy map with some trippy geometry and one thick ass atmospheric design which leaves you feeling watched constantly in these wide open spaces or cramped shoulder to shoulder. Were the flood here at one point? Is the flood still a threat here? Was this built apart of the Forerunner plan to fire the ring? Hell even the space bound maps like Boarding Action and Isolation are creepy because they themselves rely heavily on the quiet ambience and uncomfortable vastness of space.
This kinda exists in later Halo 2 maps like Lockout but it's never to the level of CEs maps.

Darksiders 1, batman arkham asylum, dark souls, prince of persia warrior within, red faction guerrilla, titan quest immortal throne and so on. Everything that gives post apocalyptic vibe, or/and makes you feel small compared to the grand scale of things which in return makes you grateful for being alive, which in return makes you value it more, which in return makes you more cautious, which in return makes you just a bit more afraid to die, you feel like you are alone, but deep down you know that you are also part of this, and whatever truth rules this world applies to you also. Which in return makes you value your life more, but also fear for your life more, but also realise, that even if you value it more that does not change much. It leaves you alone with your thoughts, and that alone is scarier than any video game, because you do not have the comfort of other people's lies and you realise that in the end the only thing that matters is your own lies, the one that you tell yourselfs every day deep down.

all of the battlefield maps are creepy when you're alone!! cus you're expecting SOMEONE to come screaming around the corner and opening fire, but it's just empty and quiet, except for off-map gunfire and missiles

Back in the day I used to make gun syncs on BF4, which meant that I would have to join empty servers so I could record the guns without interference.
There was something absolutely surreal about walking into buildings that I had already ran through a hundred times during multiplayer, but without the deafening gunfire in the background, the rush of adrenaline, and the constant fear of death. Sometimes I'd just stop in a building I already knew by heart, just to discover that there actually was furniture in the room. Furniture that I was always missing because I was rushing to the next objective or focusing on my next kill.
If you own the game, I suggest you try and walk through an empty version of a map you play a lot. The feeling is really weird

When you play these games for a long time, you immediately associate a certain map that is meant to be played with people, the absence of people takes your mind off noticing the people and puts it to the environment which can be surreal and unnaturally quiet and giving the unnerving feeling of being watched or not alone, and you may even start to see things.

Just found your channel today and you got a subscription from me. I am so amazed that my cousin and I weren't the only ones who would explore game worlds in depth (giving we would play the game first and find places we liked) on just about all game consoles. I can tell from what I watched we played a lot of the same games and one of the big ones was Star Wars Battlefront 2. The flight levels and huge open battlefields are amazing especially being a PS2 game.
I hope your channel grows because your videos are the kind that show how the aesthetic, hidden areas, and gameplay options can open you up to analyzation/improvment. If in need of any recommendations check out the Hitman series(especially Hitman 2), amy Postal game, and MGS:Snake Eater, unless you have, in which case I hope you cover sometime.
Thank you for the quality content!

I always used to love playing BO1 multiplayers maps in custom solo lobbies by myself back then (also because I had no friends lol) and you explain how I feel about this perfectly. It was always so cool how eerie they felt to me, with the ambience and background noise playing and no other players or voices around. This along with noticing creepy things you haven't noticed before that change how you look at certain maps. I always liked wondering how firing range would be as a zombies map so I explored that map a lot along with Nuketown which are 2 maps that were always busy and packed. Zombies maps give off this vibes times 10 if you can mod it to have no zombies spawn in. Ascension is a great one to explore on BO1 aswell.

Gotta say that Battlefront one inspired me.
The Jedi temple was still and silent, more than it had been in millennia. Only one person walked it's newly hallowed halls. A clone trooper. CT-7531. He knew he was unwelcome here, he hadn't been part of the platoon sent to the temple only a few weeks earlier. His footsteps echoed through the main hall as he walked towards a fallen column. He ran his finger along it, some dust gathering on his glove. He wiped it off on his armour before continuing on his way.
He moved to the library, the holobooks sat unused and unloved, he wondered if they would ever be touched again. The sound of a gonk droid echoed through the building, 31 wasn't entirely alone, his only company an unthinking droid that may not have even noticed the massacre that took place here, beyond the preview of its simple programming.
The server room was next, from what he had been told, some Padawans had hidden here during the purge, it had taken a while to find them, but now it was as if no one had ever set foot in here. it had been immaculately cleaned. The low hum of the servers indicated the that despite no one being here for its upkeep, everything was, at least for now still functional. The logs showed a recent alteration to the code, it was probably signal for Jedi to return being disabled, after all, no Jedi would be foolish enough to come here now. 31 paid it no mind and moved on.
31 made his way into the garden and took his helmet off, taking a deep breath of the fresh air, crisp and cool, taking a sip of icy spring water. With his second breath, he tasted the industry of Coruscant. The sound of the birds and the crickets gave an odd sense of serenity. He pulled his helmet back on and checked his list, this was the last place he needed to check. No survivors hiding out, mission accomplished. He hurried to the exit, his footsteps echoing through the giant building. He never wanted to return. No clone was ever welcome between these walls again.

I feel like the uncanny valley and liminal spaces are the same instinctual reaction to something. Both are triggered due to something familiar but abnormal being seen. Since your mind consciously and subconsciously makes patterns and associations with things, anything that falls outside the realm of normalcy and assured security is labeled as being a potential threat or something to avoid.
The liminal space is harder to find in modern games on PS5 and Xbox Series X due to the high detail and being able to rationalize that some places simply are empty due to things being less abstract.

I compare this feeling to those movie scenes where the camera pans and explores an abandoned settlement or village of some kind. Like these empty maps, they are supposed to be filled with human activity but are not. Usually in those movies, and even in real life, the emptiness indicates something went wrong, *very* wrong. Whatever caused this mass disappearance might still be within the vicinity, or even in that same location. That feeling carries into video games.

I remember when I was a kid and I used to walk around Halo 3 MP maps by myself cause I didn't have gold or any friends. Always felt like something was behind me or watching me from a far. I wish games would add secrets when you do play maps by yourself, maybe like the watcher from Dear Esther. MP maps that can be played differently when you're alone seems like a sick idea.
Anyways great vid, keep it up!

everytime i play the old beta and alpha versions of minecraft from beta 1.7.3 and below, i always get a feeling that i'm not alone, like there's someone watching me, this usually doesn't happen on servers and usually takes a while on beta 1.7.3 but its still that feeling of being watched that creeps me out. it might be the thought of herobrine in the back of my head, but i rarely ever have that feeling whenever i play the newer versions
