- I just couldn't say no... You wouldn't either!
A little comparison between my new Fender Big Dipper Pickups from JM's now discontinued signature Strat and the pickups I thought sounded the most 'Mayerish' The Fender Original 57/62 Pickups. If you want to jump straight to the Dipper sounds head to 5:42!

Thanks for watching!
It's a travesty that you have so few viewers... Love this!
Dude, I think you don't expect this, but you are really sounding like mayer, not just by playing his songs with his pickups which, for me, is his most iconic sound, plus the hendrix muting technique, the rakes, great video!! Earned my sub
That was so nice listening to, I am loving the Strat sound more and more these days :D
Came for the pickups, stayed for the amazing playing.
Man I discovered you not long ago and your playing makes me want to learn so much more I can't wait everyday to know what your up to such a raw talent keep safe and keep playing
Haha cheers dude, and good to hear!
Great video bro! Can’t believe this one hasn’t had more likes keep rockin ‼️✊🏼
Thanks man!
Came from MPTVUK, love your playing style. I've played guitar for years but I'm really looking to push myself to the next level. You should have a think about doing some advanced technique lessons while we're all stuck indoors!
Thanks man! Maybe one day
You are the man Dagan!!
I recently found a '06 Classic Player Mexican Strat, mis-identified on Guitar Center's Used Gear listings. The store was over 2,000 miles away, so I called to have the manager fetch the guitar and answer some questions about its condition. For $499, I decided to take a gamble, and had it shipped; I knew this was the first year run that was rumored to have Abigail Ybarra-initialed Custom Shop '69 pickups. When it arrived, I was fairly pissed off that the heavy fret wear had been misrepresented. This guitar had been gigged EXTENSIVELY. My heart sank when I removed the pickguard to find that the original pickups had been replaced. Instead of "AY" on the back of the pickups, they read, "JM." I was all set to send the guitar back for a refund, but decided to do some research...then I decided to keep it. After I performed a fret level, recrown, and setup, I now know why this guitar had been somebody's, "Number One."
Still have it?
I absolutely love the abigails, but I just got a Mayer strat and it’s as if someone took the AY’s and amplified all the goodness from them just enough ! Sooo good!
If it quacks like a duck and strums like a duck it must be a sweet sweet low output stratocaster pickup. It's like ear candy.
Big duckers 🦆
Bravo Dagan now i can understand what you say because in your video i can read the legends once more Bravo
It’s interesting. JM had an SRV signature Stratocaster that used Texas specials. Texas specials are “overwound” and I’m pretty sure SRVs real pickups were in the lower output range. The idea was fender was thinking if they overwound them that you’d get a similar tone without Stevies wiring and cable resistance. In the end I bet those pickups JM got were just middle of the road. Maybe 5-7k.
So excited to see you playing the 205H. Im getting mine paired with a 1960 4x12 next week! Was a little doubtfull casue I was thinking on a 410H but I got a great deal on the 205 halfstack.
The 410Hs are awesome too! But with the 205H being only 50 watts, you can reeeallly crank it to get that Marshal ‘sweet spot tone’ a lot easier than you can on the 410H! Enjoy 🤘
@@DaganWilkin yes that's what I thought! And since I'm not from USA there wasn't any 410H deals nearby. I Will use it mainly in small to medium clubs so I think the 50 w Is great for that. Thanks for the reply! ✌️🤘
*Man those beers kicked in last minute lol*
The legendary Dagan from PMTV has a youtube channel? Subscribed!!
please make a comparison with PRS silver sky!!! Would be awesome if you could do the mayer songs! :)
I like the first set.
That's some tasty licks man! I have the 57/62s too. They do the Mayer trick just as well, but those Dippers sound fantastic.
Thanks man!
Would you say the 57/62 is closer than the Texas Specials? I was looking at getting a custom American strat and trying to decide which fender stock pickups most closely resembled JM's.
@@calebb6141I'll say go for the 57/62s. Texas Specials are not mid-scooped and you will get closer to John's tone with a mid-scooped set of pickups. I think the Fat 50's set could also be an option as a middle ground between those two. Although, despite of your choice, I think your amp will have a bigger impact in getting closer to that tone than the pickups. Get a Blackface and a Tube Screamer you will be 90% there.
@@isaacs.4135 Thank you!
Had those 57/62s years ago and want big dippers...pretty surprised to find I liked the 57/62 better. Really surprised
I have the same John Mayer Signature Stratocaster guitar. I bought it New early 2008 with gig bag case, it still has the polish care kit unopened and papers only played one time for about a hour. Have it in a controlled storage. Maybe I will play it some day.
The edge of desire tone ive been looking for!
The Big Dipper pickups are great for most John Mayer songs, but I think for Edge of Desire you’d want some sort of warm/humbucker sound because I think he uses a Gibson SG on that track. Or at least I think he does because when the song was released and he started playing it live, he was using an SG and it sounded like the original recording. Today it looks like he uses a PRS guitar for that sound/song instead.
Could you please do a JM style pickups shootout? Like 57/62 vs big dipper vs 635JM vs lollar vintage dirty blondes vs Fralin Blues special ?
Good stuff my dude.
Cheers 🤘🤘
Darth Dagan of the Eternal Guitar Empire, please teach me the ways of the fretboard.
The Mayer pickups give you a good srv tone playing lead!
Definitely!
What settings are you using on your JVM to get the Mayer tone? Sounds amazing, as does your playing.
Sounds great, are you using 10 gauge strings?
Hey I have a fender strat that goes into my SLO-100 I also have a scooped mid SRV mod that gives the amp a 750hz mid cut. Which pickups should I go with knowing this Big Dipper or newer J635 PRS SKY pups ? Thanks 👍
What do you think about the Vinteras 60s vintage ?
crees que estos pickup tienen mas poder que las fat 50?
You should do some lesson videos!
Hi man, can you say me which kind of strings and gauge do you have on the strat?
Hey! They’re Elixir Nanoweb 9/42 👍
Wonderful, soulful playing! Hi Dagan, if you can transcribe your lead work up to .45 in the video I will happily pay for it as a great practice tool for me! Please let me know and thank you,Jason
What he does there is very similar to the solo in Stairway to Heaven. The rhythm guitar he loops is the same chord progression and key as Stairway, so if you learn that solo you’ll be playing those similar patterns
Holy shit !
cs 69 or 57/62 for john mayer tone?
Trying to decide this myself
Dagan has his own channel!? SUBSCRIBE! Love this guy
🤘🤘
Why oh why won't Fender make these!
Is that S5 or jazzy cat
Where did you purchase the big dipper pickups set?
have a set if you're interested
@@jpdorimuhoku4102 still have them🤨
@@colby4460 sure do 😁
Hang the guitar a bit higher, then you can reach the high notes better. Looks less cool, but sounds better
The intro Sounding like . Mary Jane's Last Dance
It is hahah . Mayer did it between the solo section of "IDTMWLY"
Hey what song are you playing at 11:30?
Helpless from John mayer
What he said! haha
7:25 7:58
Why doesn't he have more subs ?
What the fuck dagan shout out your UA-cam channel when you do videos for pmtv...you absolutely deserve more viewers for sure. Love how passionate you are when your playen.
Knew he looked familiar lol
The caption🤣🤣🤣🤣
*intro sounds like IDTMWLY*
I think it is IDTMWLY! he jammed with the lead on in with the big dippers
noticing some theme even with the outfit on this video hmmmm
oh man the 57/62 sound so much better... I hate the big dippers, they sound like plastic. Anyways, great comparison!
Tamir Gordin how the plastic sounds like? 😅😅😅
@@ahmadfarouqe Like too much treble 😂 Anyways this comparison made me want to switch from the big dippers to the AV pickups. To each his own I guess. Thank you!
Each to their own I guess! Glad you liked the comparison though, hope you dig the 57/62s when you get them! 🤘
Sounds great! Too bad we can't see your pickup switch or pedals... Disappointing
And just like that we all now know that the original pups eclipse the BDs that sound comparatively like crap. Also what’s with the weird face contortions with simple maneuvers.
That strap height CANT be comfortable
Oh it is! I started playing guitar low right from the beginning, and continued to do so. So for me it’s the norm. 👍
Way way to low
