Like much of the excellent docs you make available my take away is always that the poltiicians and "representatives" kept the war going far longer than it had to and it was the combatants who wanted an end to violence. The same is true the world over. I fundementally had more in common with Afghans I met and the same wishes in life, than senior officers or our politicians, or some warlord in Pakistan. Veterans of conflicts are probably the only hope of peace.
The big difference between ira members and uvf members, Ira members where hailed for protecting there land from the invaders by irish people near and far and then you have the uvf who the institution they where 'loyal' to could not care less about them that was the reality of it
The loyalist paramilitaries were used as proxies by a govt who didn’t care about them to commit murders the crown couldn’t be tied to.

This is true but albeit for the short term, until it reached the stage of where the IRA had killed more catholics than the british soldiers who killed catholics. Power went to their heads and couldn't compromise during political settlements.
The SA 80 rifle in the hands of loyalist ! The British army's rifle at that time ! The full horror of what the British state was responsible for in ulster will never be told as it would make the PIRA look like saints compared to what the British state did in its murderous terrorist campaign.

Billy Hutchinson has become visibly less remorseful over his role in the conflict in the years since this interview. He has never denounced the UVF as an organization but has only admitted, half-heartedly, that the UVF's random targeting of Catholic civilians was wrong. As the current leader of the Progressive Unionist Party he is quite probably the closest thing to a chief of staff the UVF has right now, and has made no calls for them to disband. Being a politician after you murdered two random citizens by your own hand is not the mark of a penitant ex-terrorist, and it's a shame the so-called peace process relies on community warlords like him to hold back the low-rent thugs of the paramilitary groups from firing shots again.
Of all the ex-paramilitary killers interviewed in videos on this channel Shane O'Doherty is the only one whose displays of remorse I've found convincing so far.

Ádh mór, hope you successfully manage the IRISH sea, the sea border on your £1B rubber ring for a wee dip when you are hauled in to justify the 15 +other billion it takes to run a functioning "government" (pull your heads out of your arses). Come to the realisation that 1. They should never have taken a dump on their own doorstep. 2) These LOYAL subjects couldn't even run a f*ucking bath without fueding, drug dealing & generally being the eternal Emerald thorn from the west in the regal rump. 3) What should be done to assist with the flood of refugees crossing the land "border" in seek of basic humanitarian & civil rights (sound familiar) on the banks of the Boyne in the south? 4) note that you should never, never, never rely on a party that wouldn't even spend Christmas let alone spend some of that hard earned blackmail money on social reform. 5) Ask the Red Cross for any Irish history book donations!
