Sandman is friggin literature. You actually turn smarter just by reading it. Hell just by owning it. I like to wear a housecoat, smoke my tobacco pipe and entertain guests while just standing by my sandman omnibuses.

I also love the early-to-mid 2000's series like DMZ, Y The Last Man, Fables etc. Awesome video thanks for that JUICY content!
I just read daytripper and wow what an amazing heartfelt read. I feel like this is going to be a great book to buy because if you read it every couple years you’ll get something new out of it. It displays how important family, friends, and enjoying life to the fullest is. It’s writing is extremely well done and makes you stop every page and think about life in general. Loved it
My list, mostly in order: 1) Sandman 2) Transmetropolitan 3) Planetary 4) Swamp Thing (Alan Moore) 5) Authority 6) Doom Patrol (Grant Morrison) 7) Watchman (Based on content, not imprint, it was as Vertigo like as any Vertigo title) 8) All Star Superman (I don't care it's neither Vertigo or even Vertigo like) 9) V For Vendetta 10) The Invisibles (Only on the strength of the first half; the less said about the second half and Morrison's "philosophy" the better). 11) Lucifer
Invisibles was so fun and so damn hard to understand at times. I love it, but sometimes it gave me the idea that maybe I wasn't that smart. LOVE your list.
You know vertigo is the one company I've wanted to read several books from like preacher and especially swamp thing and sandman but I've never had the chance or ability to get their books. I was lucky and read Y the last man digitally, it was an amazing series. Your lucky to have all the books you do, though I get single issues im sure if I change to a tpb/hc only collector I'd find myself getting a lot more of the things I missed out on. Awesome top 10 as always!!!
Having just read Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing for the first time, I think a lot of the attempts of modern discourse around that run to describe exactly what it is or why it’s good are inadequate. I mean this in the best possible way: Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing was 100% completely not what I expected.
Praetor7 Not super important. Only thing you need to really know is who Anton Arcane is going into Moore’s first issue, and Swamp Thing’s origin. After that, he does his own thing.
Yeah definitely preacher really Define my face in certain thing. The way I got into the series was I was reading this vertigo trade that had the first issues. I forgot what it was called. And I decided at my local comic book store at the time to check out the series. It blew me away how good the series was for me. I just was in pure shock how the artwork was on point. The story definitely was something we haven't seen before in my opinion. From start to finish I really cared about their journey and trying to find God. And make him answer for what do you thought I really enjoyed the issues where Jesse Custer talk with his dad's best friend during Vietnam. In the stories were so creative I mean they were funny but at the same time it really got you the reality of war from his perspective on things because if you read the Series. If you have not I suggest you read the series because it is crazy. It was crazy how these characters felt so realistic. This has to be in my eye the best series ever to go for me it just took me just someplace the really captivated by the characters even learning about Jesse backstory I broke down and cried. I felt so horrible Jesse Custer That his imaginary friend kind of gone through that and if you read the series you know who I am taking about a certain famous figure. This has to be a 10 out 10 of that type of series. Rest in peace Steve Dillon a Genius

Great list. Excited to see more, they're incredibly tough to make but always surprising picks I wanna check out after. Here's 3 of my favorite Vertigo titles that didn't make the list: Dark Night, Uncle Sam and American Vampire.
I'd have a pretty similar list, especially adding doom patrol in there though. Sandman: brief lives is probably my favorite single volume of graphic novels out there, and as for transmetropolitan....Spider Jerusalem is my probably my favorite character out of vertigo.
A great list, Omar! I remember how hooked I was back when Y:The last man was first published. It was the first comic I read every month and couldn't wait for the next issue... As for new top10 recommendations, an interesting one (and very difficult) would be for "best single issues". Top 10 collected editions of old classic comics would be cool, too.
I still find myself unreasonably upset by the recolouring of Swamp Thing. When I first read that it was going to be "remastered" I feared for the worst, and it still managed to disappoint. I really hope we will get this run in an Omnibus restoring Tatjana Woods fabolous colours someday. Apart from that, great video showing some of the best Vertigo had to offer!
Haven’t read Transmetropolitan but I’ve read Planetary (Omnibus) and Orbiter and I really wanna read Trans. Daytripper is definitely one of my favorite books ever. I’ve already preordered the second deluxe edition of Animal Man. Swamp Thing by Alan Moore is my favorite comic run. Lot of great suggestions here, Omar :)
Y the last man and the preacher are my absolute favorites from vertigo. The artwork in 100 bullets looks right up my alley so I might pick it up even though I'm not that into crimes.
Love these kind of videos/lists, Omar! I would love to see a list about Absolute editions: best absolutes to get having never read the stories, best values in absolutes, best extras, anything like that would be great. It’s such a great format, but I’m much less familiar with DC books compared to Marvel, so I know I’d benefit from yours/the community’s knowledge. Thanks!

OMAR- please do videos about the the SMURFS ANTHOLOGY, the SMURFS and FRIENDS and the MERCENARY the definitive edition and better if each series has a separate video. @@NearMintCondition Thank you need all the support of collectors. Plus think NBM ( the MERCENARY definitive collection) and PAPERCUTZ are the same company or have a parent company.
New to all of this and I find myself watching your videos a lot and finding we have very similar taste! Putting 8 of these on my list and I just ordered Y the last man 🎉
Now fables for me was a like a rough start with the first volume because I read it because I heard good things about it. That first volume for me was a little rough so I I dropped the series one day I definitely am going to try to go back and reread the whole entire series
I think to me it got better by volume 3 of the trades (so deluxe volume 2). Really loved it from there until after a huge war, but then that ending was perfect and beautiful.
I've got a big soft spot for Death: The High Cost of Living. I first read it when I was in the 7'th grade, and the backup AIDS PSA was where I learned how to use condoms.
I collected preacher as it came out from the beginning. The info before it came out said it was like a Quentin Tarantino movie so that appealed to me. WHAT. A. RIDE. Lol It was an Mazing journey waiting for each issue all the way to the last issue in which I had tears in my eyes. AMAZING
Amonny “don’t only read comics” THIS. If you want to be successful in writing pull from other places too. Many comics writers weren’t even comics writers at first. Read a lot, be original, and actually put pen to paper. That’s pretty much all you can do.
I can, but like the other wonderful folks have mentioned. Don't just stick to comics. Draw inspiration and study other works of art. Even movie scripts.
Hi Omar! Great review of your Top 10 Vertigo books. I agree with your inspired choices which I too own and have read on several occasions, however you did miss out "PLANETARY" by Warren Ellis. With regards to SANDMAN, it deserves it's no #1. status. I think it has been released several times in some high quality formats from Deluxe to Library to Omnibus & Absolute edition. My recommendation, which I have mentioned to you before would be the 70 issues series SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE by Matt Wagner, Steven T. Seagle & Guy Davis. These comics were absolute quality! My only concern would be that DC Vertigo have still not released this title in any Deluxe hardcover, Omnibus or Absolute edition. Which I consider to be a grave injustice to these fine stories. Any reason why Omar? It's so frustrating when you hold a title in high regard and yet it never gets given the royal treatment it richly deserves.
Oh good point in bringing up Planetary. Its weird because I see that as a Wildstorm book. I don't know why. Sandman Mystery Theatre is one of my most wanted omnis.
If I had to make a top 10 favorite comics of all time, I could literally fill it with just Vertigo titles. Surprisingly the big daddy of them all, Sandman didn't do anything for me; I'm not ashamed to say it just went over my head. I did enjoy some of the artwork, but that's not enough for it to make my list. Y the Last Man started out really strong, but for me it completely fizzled out at the end; I'm not a person to get overly involved emotionally, so it didn't work from that standpoint either. Still, the imprint is going to be sorely missed... The order my top 10 comes in is really hard to pin down because my favorites swap all the time . But when I look at my favorite Vertigo books, I notice I'm really attracted to anti-heroes and flawed protagonists. My top 10; 1. Hellblazer - the one that started it all. For over 300 issues (that's counting miniseries), John Constantine's adventures had me feverishly turning the page whenever another paperback dropped. for a lot of people the go-to run on the title is usually the Ennis one, but my favorite run on the title would probably be Paul Jenkins/Sean Philips. 2. Fables - the most brilliant premise of a comic, probably ever. Often immitated but never surpassed, the book by Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham (plus an all-star line up of talented artists) may have overstayed its welcome somewhat, but should be mandatory reading. 3. Preacher - still one of Ennis' finest hours. I'm not a religious man in the slightest, but the brutality and the black humor make this a favorite. I actually prefer the smaller hardcovers over the absolute editions; the smaller size is a better fit for Dillon's art. Punisher MAX is my favorite comic by Ennis, but this comes a close second. 4. DMZ - one of the biggest surprises ever was this book by Wood and Burchielli. I'm not into poilitics or any type of war story really, but somehow this got to me. A heavily flawed protagonist (Matty Roth), a great setting and a whole range of interesting characters made this one of my most intriguing reads. 5. Scalped - what I said about DMZ could just as well go for Scalped; the setting and the characters are what make this book the great read it is. Might be my favorite in terms of artwork. It's weird how your sympathies for certain characters change; at the end I almost did a 360 on Dash and Red Crow, and the ending is downbeat as hell... 6. American Vampire (Skinner Sweet: 'nuff said. Please finish the series, Scott Snyder) 7. 100 Bullets (come fo the artwork, stay for the story) 8. Transmetropolitan (if I had the guts, I would be Spider for Halloween, but that means shaving my head) 9. Death - the Time of Your Life (the character that transcended Sandman) 10. Swamp Thing by Alan Moore (horror masterpiece, and although I kept the hardcovers the Absolute isn't that bad, really)
I own 8 of the titles you listed, my Vertigo collection has: Absolute Preacher 1-3 and Absolute Transmetropolitian 1-2 a pair of replica Spider's glasses Lucifer Omni vol 1-2 Sandman BL Boxset Morrison's Doom Patrol Omni Morrison's Flex Mentalo Morrison's Animal Man oversized 1-2 Morrison's The Filth HC Morrison's The Invisibles 1-4 Can you tell I'm a Morrison fan? Moore's Swamp Thing 1-6 Punk Rock Jesus Hellblazer 1-19 Plus if we're counting Black Label books since it's kinda the new Vertigo. I have a bunch of the Batman books they've put out. As well as all of the Young Animals Doom Patrol trades.
Loving Preacher almost up to book 5, I'm enjoying reading it a lot more than watching the show... I'm definitely going to pre-order the Absolute Swamp Thing re-print, 2nd volume comes out just after the volume 1 reprint I believe... Enjoyed your thoughts on these books and will definitely check some of these out over time!
1' league of extraordinary gentlemen , 2' hell blazer , 3' preacher , 4' 100' bullets , 5' fables , 6' Y' the last man , 7' jack of the fables . and an omnibus of all of these titles are long over due
I have V for Vendetta (republished in 2020 as DC Black Label 10 months after Vertigo discontinued), The Losers (under the 10 anniversary imprint called Vertigo X), Deadenders, The American Way: Those Above & Those Below (2017 Vertigo sequel to the 2006 WildStorm series) & Congo Bill (volume 1).
My favorite Vertigo titles in no particular order... The Invisibles Sandman Preacher Saga of the Swamp Thing Transmetropolitan Y: The Last Man Doom Patrol Animal Man DMZ Hellblazer
Are you going to do a review for Fables compendium vol 1? I think it released today (in the UK). I'm thinking of upgrading from the TPB. I have every thing but the last couple Jack of Fables and Fairest but might just go for the deluxe editions.
But that Swamp Thing recolor though... ugh. I'm sure some people like it, but i can't stand it. I'll stay with my TPBs until they decide to do a proper omnibus
Hi Omar, thanks for doing this for all your viewers. I know I’m probably going to get slammed for this but, I have a really hard time getting into Vertigo titles. I tried reading Preacher I didn’t like it, I tried reading Swamp thing the original TPB and I enjoyed the first book. Then the 2nd one just got too weird for me, especially when the little aliens guys show up and talk in a language that doesn’t make any sense. I’ve also read Sandman Overture which was amazing, beautiful art work and I could follow it. Then i read the first TPB preludes and nocturnes, again I enjoyed it and understand it. Then I tried the 2nd Volume The dolls house, and it all went wrong from there. Couldn’t follow it, had no idea what was going on and lost interest in it all together. I tried my hardest to struggle on but in the end give up and didn’t finish it.
Nah, no one is going to slam you for having your own taste. The little alien guys were a big mockery of a comic known as Pogo. Read what you enjoy. That's what I always say..you've given them a choice.
Is there any difference between absolutes & omnibus format ? ... I own Y the last man in omnibus format but no idea about the absolutes . I would start preacher , should i go for the absolutes or w8 for the omnibus ?
The Absolutes showcase the artwork and are like huge encyclopedias with fewer chapters generally always in a slipcase hardcover format. Whereas the omnibus hardcover collects all chapters for a specific storyline.
Absolutes are in a hardcover slipcase format hold fewer chapters than an omni and are oversized like encyclopedias. An omnibus is oversized but mor as big but contains the chapters for a story line.
The reprint of Swamp Thing along with vol 2 has been preordered. Sandman is just amazing still reading but you are correct it hits on so many levels, 100 Bullets Omnibus has been solicited. Such a fan of Brubaker hopefully one day Sleeper omnibus is reprinted. Promethea is another amazing work waiting for Deluxe 3 to make my decision on the series as a whole. You got me into DayTripper that Absolute was worth it.
I have read a few of these books (namely Lucifer, Sandman, Swamp Thing, Y The Last Man and Animal Man) but only in Digital format 😔. VERTIGO comics are one of the best. Thank you Omar for more Great Suggestions. Would love if you could do one for WildStorm comics as well.
Maybe it's just me but whenever I read something by the big name Brits for Vertigo I always felt like "What am I missing" I liked the stories but not enough to want to run out and grab collections or want to re-read. I have the Animal Man dlx hc's on my list of books I might try but am reluctant because it's Morrison. If the man that put me off wanting to try Invincibles wrote Animal Man and Doom Patrol do I even want to try? Books I do love from Vertigo though: 100 Bullets, Scalped, Sweet Tooth, Daytripper, and Punk Rock Jesus(Almost half the Dlx HC is bonus material and I love how I went from having no interest in reading the singles about a clone of Jesus to being totally intrigued about a clone of Jesus meets The Truman show goes Punk Rock literally. And Sean Gordon Murphy...come on what's not to like about his art!) Great list though and I hope someday Black Label sees fit to give Astro City a collection that I would be all over!
I got the Fables deluxe editions volumes 1 & 2 after watching this video and I am loving it! I was looking buy the next two volumes and it seems that volume 4 is not available anywhere. Plus it going for crazy prices on eBay. Any idea if we will get a reprint. And thanks for all the great recommendations :)
I’m almost done with Y the last man and love it, I loved Animal Man. Next is Planetary for me what do you recommend after that for Vertigo? I was thinking Doom Patrol maybe but it wasn’t in the top 10 so maybe try something else?
Hey brother, for the same reason Colossal Conan is one of my favorite omnis and not in my top 10 DH books. My brain is odd. So I see Doom Patrol and Conan as wonderful complete collections that are HUGE. So to me that's what an omnibus is supposed to be. HUGE and complete so I love books like that. But as far as reads I went with Joe the Barbarian and Animal Man for Morrison. DP would have been number 11.
I am a simple man. I see a new Near Mint Condition episode I click and like! Awesome list again Omar!
Yup i don't even watch first lol, just here to support my guy Omar. One of the kindest people in a world of shitty people

New to all of this and I find myself watching your videos a lot and finding we have very similar taste! Putting 8 of these on my list and I just ordered Y the last man 🎉
Thank you so much for the kind words.
When you said Hellblazer was an honorable mention you looked so pained lol great list and great vid as always
Sooo hard to limit myself to a certain number.
LONG LIVE VERTIGO!
Nice video, I enjoyed that.
Thanks for the kind words and watching.
5:54 !! JUST look at that artwork man!!!! Risso is one in ten million!
Now fables for me was a like a rough start with the first volume because I read it because I heard good things about it.
That first volume for me was a little rough so I I dropped the series one day I definitely am going to try to go back and reread the whole entire series
The last 50 issues are meh at best for me. The first 100 are good. To be fair one of the last issue in the last fifty are good and it broke my heart.
You owe it to yourself to read Fables. The first arc is a little rough, but starting with the second arc, Animal Farm, you'll be hooked.
I think to me it got better by volume 3 of the trades (so deluxe volume 2). Really loved it from there until after a huge war, but then that ending was perfect and beautiful.
I have only 3 more Y the Last man issues to get to have a complete set . Gotta got all the comic shops in the area
I've got a big soft spot for Death: The High Cost of Living. I first read it when I was in the 7'th grade, and the backup AIDS PSA was where I learned how to use condoms.
I remember that psa.
It would be great if we also have a "best character runs" similar to this series. Best Superman runs/series or best Fantastic 4 runs/series
Great idea.
I collected preacher as it came out from the beginning. The info before it came out said it was like a Quentin Tarantino movie so that appealed to me. WHAT. A. RIDE. Lol It was an Mazing journey waiting for each issue all the way to the last issue in which I had tears in my eyes. AMAZING
That last issue always makes me have eye sweat. Perfect ending.
Near Mint Condition couldn’t agree more!
What about a list if you’re trying to be a writer ? Books that demonstrate all parts of the craft
As a writer, you need to read, read, and read... Even poor written comics can be useful. Don't read only comics.
Definitely preacher I hope in the future gets an old reader new reader
You brought up Sleeper but that was actually a Wildstorm book...which makes me wonder... Do you have a top 10 for Wildstorm?
I believe I do.
My top 10;
Please finish the series, Scott Snyder)
7. 100 Bullets (come fo the artwork, stay for the story)
8. Transmetropolitan (if I had the guts, I would be Spider for Halloween, but that means shaving my head)
9. Death - the Time of Your Life (the character that transcended Sandman)
10. Swamp Thing by Alan Moore (horror masterpiece, and although I kept the hardcovers the Absolute isn't that bad, really)
Great list and Death High Cost of Living is one of my favorite stories.
First sandman issue had me confused af lol
Thank you very much for all these suggestions
You're so welcome!
Joe the Barbarian is one of my favorite stories ever. Great to see it getting some love.
Couldn't agree more!
To me, Preacher and The Sandman proved that you can stray away from the comics and have it work. Those two are in my Top 5 CB shows ever.
Sandman is *so* close to the comics! Probably the closest adaptation I can think of. I'm pleased you like it, let's hope they adapt the whole run!
@@Jonny0W I agree! Can’t wait for S2
I own 8 of the titles you listed, my Vertigo collection has:
Absolute Preacher 1-3 and Absolute Transmetropolitian 1-2
a pair of replica Spider's glasses
Lucifer Omni vol 1-2
Sandman BL Boxset
Morrison's Doom Patrol Omni
Morrison's Flex Mentalo
Morrison's Animal Man oversized 1-2
Morrison's The Filth HC
Morrison's The Invisibles 1-4
Can you tell I'm a Morrison fan?
Moore's Swamp Thing 1-6
Punk Rock Jesus
Hellblazer 1-19
Plus if we're counting Black Label books since it's kinda the new Vertigo.
I have a bunch of the Batman books they've put out.
As well as all of the Young Animals Doom Patrol trades.
One series no one talks about is scalped. It's literally the Wire/BB/Deadwood in comic form.
I own Y The Last in all formant that out. I love this Book. It help me when I was feeling really down.
It’s a phenomenal book.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you for the kind words.
So many on list I want to check out now. Thanks for the info
Hope you enjoy it!
I am surprised that you haven't included Ex-Machina by Vaughn!
I liked it, but to me Pride and Y were better books. That's just my opinion.
1' league of extraordinary gentlemen , 2' hell blazer , 3' preacher , 4' 100' bullets , 5' fables , 6' Y' the last man , 7' jack of the fables . and an omnibus of all of these titles are long over due
I miss the Vertigo imprint. I was there at the beginning and read a ton of Vertigo titles back in the day.
I’d personally add The Wake by Scott Snyder/Sean Murphy and The Filth by Grant Morrison/Chris Weston. But that’s just me. Great list though!
I did like Filth and the Wake, there is just so much goodness.
Near Mint Condition I can agree with that! Narrowing it down to just a top 10 must have been nearly impossible!
Just fyi, there are other imprints that are great too...like "America's Best Comics", "Wildstorm", "Milestone", "Paradox Press".
My favorite Vertigo titles in no particular order...
The Invisibles
Sandman
Preacher
Saga of the Swamp Thing
Transmetropolitan
Y: The Last Man
Doom Patrol
Animal Man
DMZ
Hellblazer
Great list.
I kept my HCs for that reason.
You could always try the third Sandman tpb sometime to see what you think, they can mostly be read in any order.
The early ones especially
Love the swamp thing cover
Same
Great video! Omar will you do a vertigo hidden gems video? Please + Thanks!!
I would love for you to do an overview of Doom Patrol. I just bought the Grant Morrison Omnibus, but haven't opened it yet....
excellent video, I'll be making sure to check some lf these out
Thank you for watching.
Classic books 💯
YES!
Vertigo. RIP. :(
Also... Invincibles?! You mean Invisibles, or is there something I've missed?!
You never know when they will revive Vertigo. Nothing is set in stone.
Totally meant Invisibles. Uncanny Omar talk pretty one day. Karen is now at Dark Horse and doing her thing there.
Ha! You did the list! Awesome, man :)
You bet! Im a man of my word.
NMC, You're bad for my bank account. Thanks, bro. Good vid.
Glad to help :)
You are reading some amazing books.
@@NearMintCondition No regrets so far just juggling between titles but well worth it.
Whoa is that a Swamp Thing omni ?
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
That's the Nancy Collins Omnibus of Swamp Thing.
@@NearMintCondition it just made my list.lol
Good Lord Bro... Nice!👍
Thanks ✌
I have read a few of these books (namely Lucifer, Sandman, Swamp Thing, Y The Last Man and Animal Man) but only in Digital format 😔.
VERTIGO comics are one of the best. Thank you Omar for more Great Suggestions.
Would love if you could do one for WildStorm comics as well.
Thank you so much for the kind words and watching.
Like to see all of your favorite picture novels. I even plan to buy the other titles, unfortunately comixology does not ship countries outside US. 😥
Thank you so much.
I like the Milligan books
And Sean Gordon Murphy...come on what's not to like about his art!)
Great list though and I hope someday Black Label sees fit to give Astro City a collection that I would be all over!
Astro City is a must!
unknown soldier, was a great series that hasnt been collected beyond trade.....under-rated
Thank you for watching. Right now it's showing out of print.
@@NearMintCondition Thanks!
I just noticed a couple of days ago that Risso's art reminds me of Tim Sale's some.
Completely.
I’m almost done with Y the last man and love it, I loved Animal Man. Next is Planetary for me what do you recommend after that for Vertigo? I was thinking Doom Patrol maybe but it wasn’t in the top 10 so maybe try something else?
Doom Patrol would have been 11 for sure. :) it’s excellent.
late 90s Vertigo (invisibles, transmetropolitan, preacher) molded what i expected from a good comic book.
So many 90s comics get overlooked because it’s the “cool” thing to do.
@@NearMintCondition anyone: ......
90s comics: would you like some leg?
How is Doom Patrol one of your favorite omnis and it’s not one of your favorite Vertigo collected editions?
Hey brother, for the same reason Colossal Conan is one of my favorite omnis and not in my top 10 DH books. My brain is odd. So I see Doom Patrol and Conan as wonderful complete collections that are HUGE. So to me that's what an omnibus is supposed to be. HUGE and complete so I love books like that. But as far as reads I went with Joe the Barbarian and Animal Man for Morrison. DP would have been number 11.
Not a fan of Doom Patrol. Weird and overrated
@@francoisdemorcy5084 it’s doom patrol what do you expect?
Almost a perfect list
Hated 100 Bullets
