I got pulled aside for a candle once. TSA agent asked “do you have anything flammable?” And I said no, thinking of the standard TSA definitions of flammable liquids. He thought it was a real “gotcha!” when he pulled out the candle. Apparently he was counting anything that can be lit on fire as flammable which is….technically factual I guess? but that logic should have applied to all my clothes then too 😂
If you're picking up duty free alcohol or perfumes and have a connecting flight in the USA, just let the person at the duty free till know. They'll pack it in the special, TSA approved connection bag where the receipt will be visible. I've done this dozens of times when bringing gin from Heathrow airport to the US with an onwards connection to Vancouver, Canada.
Tripods are best in checked luggage..and the last three international flights from my home airport in Canada had security having a physical inspection of my long lens (100-500). I also keep my camera batteries and power bank in close proximity in the backpack so they can be inspected if needed. So far no issues though.
To save space I packed a small flashlight and a couple of other small things in my empty metal water bottle. Got pulled aside for that but nothing was confiscated. Was advised to find a better packing system. Also once a helpful TSA officer told me when carrying small scissors to pack them so they are slightly open so the officers can see the blade length more clearly.
I had a mini sewing kit that included a tiny scissor, which appeared in the scanner. It took me quite some time to figure out what they were talking about. The whole thing was about two inches long.
i only frell'd up one. had a $3 mini knife in my backpack. which is legal to carry on planes. the only problem was London (heathrow i think... been a while). and in the UK this is a "NO" (in bold red). and since that happened so often they just said "just say that you relinquish ownership" because the police squad was tired of dealing with it. probably "we don't have time to deal with basically toothpicks"
4:35 oh, i know the story of the lightsaber! It was thanks to the Napkin-Notes-Dad that the TSA made Lightsabers a carry on. If anyone is interested in the story, he gave the goulet-pen team an interview. Just search on youtube.
Just went last week from DTW to NYC and our bag had to be screened by hand because of our deoderant! TSA said some deoderants have such a high amount of aluminum in them that the scanner thinks its metal. Also, had too big of a bundle of cords for my tech gear once that it got flagged too.
I prefer a little citrus with my water so I packed a whole lime from the grocery store in my empty Yeti bottle. I had to take it out and explain why I had it. I did get to keep it.
One of the only times I've had my bag checked for something that wasn't electronics was when I had some ceramic magnets that I forgot I had put in my clothes bag so they wouldn't shatter accidentally.
I had some Lakanto Monk Fruit sweetener and my OM hot chocolate mushroom blend set off alarms because of the erythritol!! Thankfully, after opening and testing, they didn’t get discarded!
if you fly with an inflatable PFD (i travel with it occasionally) with the CO2 cartridge installed you will be flagged. we have gotten to the point where we just put it in its own bin, pull up the tsa regs about being able to carry an armed PFD with spare cartridge on our phones.
Ive never tried it, but my dad (who worked on airports around the world) said that Christmas pudding would show up on scanners like an explosive. I'm assuming its because its so dense. So maybe be prepared t to have your bag searched if you are carrying that.
Just check the website right before you fly because rules change a lot. And always remember that domestic TSA is not the equivalent of international security.
I had an empty glass spray bottle cause my bag to get pulled at Heathrow. I told them it was a "just in case" bottle and that it was empty, and I didn't even have to dig it out anymore.
So … if I pack a cartridge razor to shave … I have to check the cartridges? I use a Gillette razor 🪒. Those cartridges are pretty easy to buy here in the United States at stores like CVS. I’m Andrew.
I believe cartridges fall under "disposable" which are allowed in carry-on baggage. The video clip is a bit confusing because it shows a cartridge but it says "pretend this is a safety razor blade."
When I was 10, we were flying and I had packed colored pencils. They apparently looked like sparklers in the x-ray machine (this was like 30 years ago) I had traveled with them before, but we were traveling around the Fourth of July, so maybe that was what made them flag it.
Had loose leaf tin cans flagged as the machines cannot see inside. Also had ny at the tine teenage daughter get a cinmerical icing container compensated TSA could bot decide if it was or was not allowed. As I have prescription medications is lotion/gel forn which are allowed but often flagged for extra sceeen I've learned to pull the suspect items and place them in their own bin. This includes metal cups/bottle which go in with their lid open. Then if sonething is flagged for extra review it is faster as they dobt need to first locate the item of interest in your bag.
At 0:59, books are also inspected if taken on a plane in a Chinese airport because they don’t want Chinese information brought into other countries for whatever reason.
Another thing to avoid in hand luggage is a traditional Xmas Pudding. This is because they're so close in density to plastic explosive that the puddings are actually used to test the scanners. Last year, I took my lightsaber blade to a nearby UPS store before flying home, to have it safely packed for the hold.
I brought a custom made keyboard with me once and that was the most horrific experience convincing TSA that it was not a weapon and literally just a really nice keyboard for my computer
Anyone please let me know if there’s any problem when bringing a lot of books in checked luggage entering the US?! I’m flying to my home country and I’ll bring back quite a lot physical books in checked luggage. Ik nowadays ppl prefer kindle such but my eyes can’t handle screens as well as I prefer books 📕.
Some of the things that got confiscated at airports... In Japan they dumped the water out of my reusable bottle even though I filled it at LAX and was just transferring from Tokyo and not staying in the country. In China they took a rare displayable tank made of bullet shells that were empty. I dont even think they were real metal shells, but the machine showed it and they freaked out and threw it away. In Egypt they took my swiss army thing even though it was like 2 inches long and the blade was dull. I think they were just stealing it though. Guatemala they took my tweezers and said that I could stab somebody with it on the plane? They also took a womans local hot sauce and accused her of being able to squirt hot sauce at peoples faces. Las Vegas made me throw away my meatballs plate cause there was too much sauce. Some tourists I met have said that certain countries wont let you take dirt or rocks.
One time when I was flying the metal detector kept hitting on me. I had to keep taking off clothes to no avail. It ended up being a foil wrapped eye glass cleaning cloth buried in a pocket.
everytime i travel from the netherlands, i bring as much dutch cheese with me as i can carry. its just too delicious. my cheese has been checked for drugs a couple of times xD
I had one of those simple women's face shaver thingies, which never was a problem, as it's not even sharp. Every airport, no problem. But then in Istanbul they searched me and then confiscated it. Still don't get it.

Had a stack of singles packed tightly together that needed to be inspected when I was heading to New Orleans for a bachelor party...
How about electric razors / shavers ? Are they allowed ?
Yup

@ I’m glad I’m not the only one who has that question.

A jar of maple butter, because it's considered a liquid. I was so pi$$ed.
The Oscar for "best portrayal of horror at losing one's valuable necklace", goes to...Kristyne Defever! 😛
😂😂😂
During the first few years of TSA checks, my mom, a RN, had her stethoscope checked out after the x-ray machine.
One time when I was flying the metal detector kept hitting on me. I had to keep taking off clothes to no avail. It ended up being a foil wrapped eye glass cleaning cloth buried in a pocket.
I bring ice packs all the time. Tsa precheck.
My fuel rod chargers were flagged at YYZ, as ‘a dense metal object with random cords raises suspicion’
I had issues with my solid hand lotion, it turnes out, it detected the drug screen... 😂😂😂
everytime i travel from the netherlands, i bring as much dutch cheese with me as i can carry. its just too delicious. my cheese has been checked for drugs a couple of times xD
I had a fun reaction w/ my Rubik's cubes. Popping them out of my jacket pocket got them to understand what they were.
😂😂😂
My hair is much shorter now, but 15 years ago, TSA would always stop and pat down my fro!😂

Assholes took my lavender shower gel! What could I possibly do with that other than perfume myself with lavender??
do you really need all this stuff when sitting in an airplane for X number of hours ?
Chess pieces will also be flagged since they are weighted with lead, and there are a lot of them

A full package of diapers and wipes for a baby I was travelling with.
Lauren, what happened to the hair at 2.51? Haha.
😂😂😂
Had my ice only (not water) confiscated in Japan but not my mini multi tool 🤷♂. So arbitrary.
😂😂😂
شغال
I’ve never had a razor questioned in my carry on with the blade(s) on or off. 🤷🏻♂️
Often travel with coffee and tea. Never had trouble going to Europe or bring a few kg bricks of coffee home. Carry on luggage 🧳
