  • My first impressions of the brand new not yet released Epona from Papillon Perfumery. This one is a wild ride and such an incredible scent journey. Thanks to Liz for sending me the sample.
Epona will be released on 1st August 2024 and will be on the official website here:

I have to add that on second wearing I'm finding it much less smokey than I did yesterday and the violet is more noticeable, I can see me really falling for this one. Will follow up on Instagram in the near future once I know the fragrance better.

About me - I'm Claire and I live in the UK. My taste in perfumes is usually quite sweet but not too sweet, I love white florals but not tuberose so much. I like gourmands as long as they smell like perfumes still, I require my perfumes to change a little bit as I wear them ie not linear. I don't enjoy oud, leather, cumin, saffron or strong patchouli however there can be occasions where I do like perfumes with these notes if they are not too dominant. I enjoy most florals as long as they are backed up with something sweet or perhaps resins / insense. I tend to not enjoy anything very soapy. I also don't really enjoy very green fragrances. I am averse to overdoses of ambroxan and iso E super (timbersilk or similar) just because I find it annoying! I have no problem with synthetics in perfumery but I do enjoy perfumes that have some notes that at least smell like they could be from nature. My favourite type of perfumery is indie and I love Francesca Bianchi, Teone Reinthal, 4160 Tuesdays and Papillon Artisan Perfumes.

Adverts - I know they are annoying but they earn me a few pennies from the Adsense which I put back into buying perfumes to talk about on this channel.

On second wearing the violet is much more noticeable and the smoke is not as strong straight away.

You see Claire, Liz surprises us doesn't she. 😂her sorcery is an art. I have this sample too. I should do a video on it. I love the violet, combined with the soapiness and that horse skin accord. 💜

Your reviews are always so descriptive Claire. One can definitely take what you share and visualize how that perfume will be like. Love your jumper!

Thanks so much Claire for this thoughtful and detailed review - it’s the perfect build up to this new release ☺️ I also totally relate to what you’re saying about modern “niche” perfumery. Liz however as you say is one of the good ones! ❤

Cade note is one of the few things that scares me, but the rest sounds perfect. I completely agree on current niche. The aromachemicals being used now are really starting to bother me. Papillon, Francesca Bianchi, and DSH as well as Chanel extraits are the only modern perfumes I like nowadays.
I would love ideas on more perfumers/houses to try.

I just love the way you process, analyse and describe the journey of the scents you sample on screen in this way. I think you have such an excellent nose and ability, you always pick up on ingredients and accords. I don't know why brands aren't paying you big bucks for consulting, honestly

This was such a beautiful and detailed review, Claire - thank you! I had assumed this wouldn't be for me either but now I'm intrigued so will definitely investigate whether it's vegan! xx

It’s one I’d recommend everyone to try even if it’s not exactly your cuppa in terms of notes. Just so well done and such an interesting development. I can see it winning awards.

Faaantastic review!!!! 🥰 Although I am not a fan of soap in perfumes, Chanel style aldehydes sound appealing to me, of course! Are you sure soapyness doesn't come from iris? I love it when perfumes have contrasting layers - they emphasize each other and give perfume a complexity. I really appreciate scents taking me on a journey! Oakmoss? Yes please!!!! Changing stages sounds so appealing! Fascinating that it's touching your strings, that feeling is priceless! I hate to rush time especially in summer, but can't wait for this release!!
PS: Cuir de Russie Chanel from Osmotheque is said to be extremely smoky!

I kept asking myself if iris is there because it was reminding me of perfumes with prominent iris, but I’m not sure! I don’t pick up on it as a single note. It’s truly a beautiful fragrance and worth the wait!

Cade has a BBQ type sweetness to it that makes it unwearable for me however birch tar smoke notes I really enjoy. The soapy notes are also a 'no' for me... I am expecting this one won't be for me unfortunately. I do really enjoy so much of Liz's perfumes that it's okay to have a miss once in awhile. :) Great initial impression. I really like how honest and opinionated you are, and so willing to share the whole wearing experience not just top notes off a piece a paper. 100% agree with you on the overwhelming presence of aroma chemicals these days in perfumery. I think it's quite literally ruining people's noses. Or, maybe due to covid infections a lot of people lost the finer details in scent and that's why these aroma chemicals are more popular? To appeal to those who have very badly damaged sense of smell? Anyway, thanks Claire!

I’m not sure about the cade anymore as the second time I tried it was far less intense. Liz has confirmed a smidge of birch tar. Interesting idea re Covid but I do think this crap was going on before but it has dramatically got worse these last few years. Thanks for watching Jackie 💖

I feel exactly the same way about recent niche perfumery , it’s so boring and no originality , I’ve little interest anymore . Liz however , I adore and Epona is a curveball !!! The violet ebbs and flows after the smokiness has calmed down at the same time it definitely has a Papillon vibe / dna running through it and I get a little saltiness in there too 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’m not sure if it’s something I’ll end up getting , I think it’s one you need to spend some time with

    • @Smurfygurly

Yes it’s a complex beast and I feel that it will keep showing different facets with each wear. Honestly this could go into the “I need it” category or not, I can’t predict it yet.
