Yes, as a rule of thumb, corn should be knee-high by the 4th of July in the US. And it should be planted when oak leaves are as big as a squirrel's ear. We just get it out by April 17th. I'm in Missouri, and while I take care of the other plants, my husband is in charge of the corn. Ours is already tasseling, so with any luck, we'll have corn to pick in a few weeks. We also plant a fall crop of corn as well.

Pond water can turn brown due to certain leaf litter falling into it and rotting in the water; certain leaves can release tannins into the water when they decompose. You see it a lot when rhododendrons fall into water and rot. 👍🏻

Just a little tip when it is hot like it has been do not water the foliage of your plants as the sun will burn it off , take your rose off your watering can and water at the bottom of the plant

Emma now might be a good time to assess your water storage on your plot. I can't tell if water buts or an ibc will fit behind your shed but worth thinking about. Also not sure if you have water buts on both sides of your shed but that might be on option as well. Just a thought😊

It's wild this season! Couple of weeks ago nothing was growing because of all the slugs, and today I had to put shade cloth on my greenhouse because it was going above 50C in there with all the window open...

Enjoy the warmer weather Emma. Hope you removed the cloches from the dahlias the heat and sunshine can be like an oven and kill them. Btw the knee high by 4th of July is a tell that the corn is growing on good schedule. If it’s not knee high the crop will be late.

I chew the pea pods too and just spit the fibre bits out. I prefer sugar snaps and snow peas as the pods are edible too. My daughter who refused to eat peas from time she was a baby, will eat the fresh pea pods The only way she eats peas other than split peas in soup.

I agree, after all the rain we kept getting, it’s worrying not getting to the allotment to water the plants in this high heat. Thank you for the discount, I’ve just ordered some waterproof gloves as have been after some for ages.

Weirdly, if you suffer from arthritis or gout, stinging nettles are a natural remidy. Just sting yourself on the affected area. Nettles have been used for thousands of years to reduce inflammation.

Hello Garden folk :) I’m a beginner, totally inspired by Emma! I’ve just got my own plot and am super excited to get going. Quick Question, I’m finding it super hard to source my Wood for the Bed borders, any tips? I know I can’t use treated.. but the sleepers in Wickes etc are so expensive, all the decking seems to be treated.. HELP :) I notice Emma’s are thin and tall, these are ideally what I would like.. what are they and where do you think she gets them from? Any advice would be SO appreciated 🙏 💚

Hey i heard not to water much now untill u see plants struggle from lagg of water. Carrots will try to find water by rooting deeper witch i think gives u longer carrots. So maby try not to water much only pots or newly planted😊
Let your plants find water themselves witch helps them to be stronger later :)
Hopefully someone can correct me if im wrong 😊

Liquid feed your Sweetpeas Emma. I do mine every two weeks, seems to help. Your plot is looking great🌺

Peas should grow in good soil, rich, and I think you're right, that patch is not fertile for some reason. Yes, it's likely that soil is unhealthy.
In autumn, mulch heavily, add some composted manure, some coco coir, and dig it into the top 3 inches.
If you can put in a winter cover crop of some kind over that entire bed.
I add worm compost to my own beds in the autumn, allowing the biology to get going over winter when we don't disturb the soil as much.
I learned a few years ago, feed the soil first, then the plants only if needed. I don't use any chemicals, just leaves, compost and let the worms in the soil do all the work for me.

    • @ninemoonplanet
      @ninemoonplanet Місяць тому

You have trees everywhere, start now collecting the falling leaves in an open air container, this way you do have excellent leaf mould for conditioning the soil, plus a dried mulch to maintain moisture.
Let it sit over winter, adding more leaves as they dry and fall.
Those leaves will add soil fungi, absolutely necessary for good soil.
