- Blumenau is a municipality in the state of Santa Catarina, it is the third municipality in population in the state, the 8th in the Southern Region of Brazil, the 78th in Brazil and the only medium-large city in Santa Catarina, constituting one of its main industrial centers, technology and university.
It was founded by the German chemist and pharmacist Hermann Bruno Otto Blumenau, who arrived in a boat via the Itajaí-Açu river accompanied by seventeen other compatriot settlers. This landed at the mouth of the Garcia stream on September 2, 1850 and divided the land into lots so that the settlers could build their homes, mostly houses made with the half-timbered technique. The gap between the mouths of the Velha and Garcia streams defined the current city center.
It has a cultural agenda focused on parties based on the daily life and habits of European immigrants, highlighting the German colonization, with Oktoberfest, the second largest beer party in the world, which, every year in October, takes place for 17 days, and the Stammtisch, a traditional meeting of associations, which takes place both on Rua XV de Novembro, in the center of the municipality, and in Vila Itoupava. The Italian core of the population holds the Festitália, in addition to meetings of the Centro de Tradições Gaúchas (CTG) and several other manifestations of European and Brazilian cultures.
Blumenau, with estimated 366.418 of population, is the economic center of the Itajaí valley, with the textile and computer industries standing out - with national and international companies, such as Companhia Hering, the 16th largest in the state of Santa Catarina, and the largest label manufacturer in the world, Haco. It is also noted the regional relevance of the services and trade sector; namely health and education, with the University of Blumenau and four hospitals. Blumenau has one of the highest human development indices in Brazil and extensive vegetation cover due to the presence of the Serra do Itajaí National Park in its territory. However, it has social problems in common with the rest of Brazil, such as the presence of 23,131 inhabitants in favelas, the highest number in Santa Catarina in 2010.

Brazil is a very diverse country. The neighboring state of Paraná is home to one of the largest Polish and Ukrainian communities outside of Eastern Europe. There are also cities in the state of Sao Paulo, like Bastos and Registro, where the majority of the population is Japanese. Bahia is a predominantly African state. Interesting country to say the least.

The problem was immigration from within Brazil. People from the northern Brazilian states had a very different culture from that of the South. They contributed to the spread of poverty in Southern Brazil. Yes - Europe, USA, Canada and Australia are on their way to becoming poor and having a lot of ethnic and religious conflict (rise of Islam, spread of poverty, etc).

I was in Blumenau at Oktoberfirst, 25 years ago. It was like to be in Germany. The state of Santa Catarina generally has very European style. I was also in Itajai, many times in that period. Estou encantado com Blumenau. Que cidade linda, calçadas padronizadas, jardins urbano, fiação subterrânea, ruas limpas, edificações sem pichação, isso mostra que teve e tem gestão pública séria. Um exemplo pra o Brasil.
Olá, sou de Blumenau, nasci e cresci nesta cidade. Realmente o centro da cidade é um lugar muito bonito, os bairros mais afastados já não tem esse investimento todo quando o centro que foi mostrado no vídeo, mas não deixa de ser um bom lugar para viver. Creio eu que tivemos a sorte de ser colonizados por pessoas que exaltavam o trabalho e o progresso.

Estamos sem água há três semanas, vem por alguns minutos ou poucas horas e acaba. Obras inacabadas, rolos com construtoras e indicados políticos presos. Ele só mostrou o centro de Blumenau, a parte limpa e florida. Mas temos muitos problemas em todos bairros. Porém, essa cidade em muitos quesitos, sim é muito melhor que outras.

Vieles sieht vielleicht ein bisschen anders aus als im rest von Brasilien und ja man sieht vielen Leuten ihre Mitteleuropäische Abstammung an und trotz des deutschen Namen und des Oktoberfestes Blumenau ist eine brasillianische Stadt nur halt mehr europäisch geprägt.

A more accurate tittle would be "Germanic City" instead of "German City".
At the time a lot of the immigrants went to Brazil, Germany wasn't even unified, and a portion were from what is Austria today.

You are correct, German immigration to Brazil was mainly made up of Volga and Pomeranian Germans, all the countries where the ancestors came from no longer exist.

Penso que a ideia de "cidade mais alemã do Brasil" traz muitos equívocos. Blumenau não é uma cidade pequena, a cultura original da colonização alemã já se encontra há tempos integrada com a cultura brasileira, senão diluída. Nem mesmo a língua alemã é falada como antes. A arquitetura da cidade já mostra o ecletismo das constantes reconstruções realizadas nas cidades brasileiras. Como em todo o Brasil, ao longo do tempo, prevalece a miscigenação. Bastar dar uma volta pela cidade para perceber isso. É importante e necessário preservar as origens, mas não em detrimento da dinâmica do presente.

It looks very nice. I never visited but I did visit Nova Friburgo, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, settled by Swiss people in the 1830’s, and I still remember how charming it was.

@@isabellebittencourt2212 i'm serious :D many towns and cities in Germany end with -au, very common. I think the founders chose "Blumenau" because it's a beautiful name for a city. And a "Aue" ist the best place to found a settlement... a plain near a river or a lake :)

Blumenau é linda, porém o transito é péssimo, as ruas quase nao tem vagas para estacionar
Falta de transporte público de qualidade é evidente.
No Brasil inteiro. Qualquer cidade de 100 mil habitantes já é um inferno para se deslocar.
