I’m glad you explained what they’re supposed to do. I had multiple fail me. Whether it was bullying, concern for other students with proof in text of them trying to hurt themselves, me wanting to hurt myself or what not. I hope that the system grows and allows room for more people like you who actually care and don’t just see students as a number. I get that all staff are mandated reporters. But even when my counselor had the information they needed to make a report they failed to do so. Even as an adult I have issues trusting therapist now. But keep spreading knowledge and create a new generation of staff that will do right by their students

I’m a mental health counselor who somehow stumbled upon this video! It was very informative
I wish school counselors back at my high school fulfilled more of the duties described in this video, especially when it comes to socio-emotional support and college readiness. It’s tough, there are so many kids, too few counselors, there’s burnout and subpar leadership.
If school counselors, school based therapists, and school psychologists were able to live up to their full potential with no external factors in the way, I think our public schools could be a better place for our youth. ❤

I definitely agree with this. I have 435 students and there’s no way to be everything to everyone…but I try ❤️

I love your videos! They are always so helpful. I’m currently in a marriage & family therapy grad program but I’m thinking about switching to school counseling. I was a teacher for several years so that would be a natural next step for me but still unsure.

I’m in the process of applying to masters program in school counseling! I watched another one of your videos where you talked about CACREP schools that allow for additional classes which provide mental health professional degree and certification as a licensed professional counselor. How would this differ from school counseling? Do licensed professional counselors work in school settings as well?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!! 💪🏽💝

I enjoyed your video. You succintly told us what a school counselor does. Thank you for explaining this to the average lay person. The only thing I dislike about the schedule being chosen is the first through 4th period classes are usually up to 30 students, because the computer just puts the kiddoes in the classes. This causes problems for that teacher with discipline management due to the class being soo crowded. Classes in 5th, 6th, and 7th period are usually small with 8 to 15 students. Trust me I have spoken with many school counselors about this problem. They tell me that it is done to make sure students get them in the morning (before lunch) due to the students energy levels. So, if you have a brand new teacher to the classroom who has no discipline management in place her life is not easy. I see this over and over again. I do like the teaching classroom lessons in elementary. Yes, as the grades go upward the school counselors role changes perspective a little. You did a great job on explaining what a school counselor does. I can tell you are a great school counselor. Be blessed.

I'm really enjoy the content your putting out. I would like to suggest quieting the background music a tad. Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to stay focused on what your saying at times. Thank you for taking the time to help motivate aspiring counselors!!

Hi Mr. B! Thank you for all of your videos on counseling, it's helping me to decide if it's what I want to do. I was previously a teacher and considering a career change to school counseling because I found teaching to be way too overstimulating to be ON all the time, while also managing a variety of personalities at the same time. I was hoping to get your professional opinion on the self-care aspect of the school counselor role? Is it generally high stress or pretty manageable? I don't want to romanticize the position, only to get burned out and decide to fully leave education. So, your perspective is MUCH appreciated. Thank you in advance. Also, from your experience, is it possible to incorporating health coaching into the role?

It honestly depends on your school district, location, school leader, and support systems. Counseling is manageable with those things in place! ☺️ good luck!
