Cranking Grass Patches for Summer Bass | 2 Methods to Prevent Snagging

  • Crankbaits aren't most angler's first choice when it comes to bass fishing grass but they can be very effective if fished with the right gear and proper methods. Wired2fish's McKeon Roberts sets out on a learning expedition to find and catch grass bass using crankbaits out of his kayak. He shares some of his lessons learned regarding tactics and gear so you too can put this effective lure category to work out of kayaks, canoes, and small boats.

Crankbaits are erratic lures that can be fished on a long cast at specific depths. Depending on where the fish are, you can use crankbaits that dive to different depths to dial in the strike zone and stay in it longer. One issue with crankbaits is that they are not known to fish well in weeds. Where coincidentally summer bass spend much of their time. This takes crankbaits off the radar for many fishermen who frequent grass-heavy lakes. With the right retrieve and feel, however, crankbaits can be fished effectively in and around weeds.
There are two schools of thought when it comes to cranking grass. One is that you rip the crankbait from the grass to sever the weed stems as you retrieve, The other is to let the buoyancy of the bait float itself out from being hung. On one hand, ripping the grass can cause reaction strikes but can also spook bass that are closely tracking the bait. Floating the crankbait out is a more subtle way to free yourself from grass and this method requires paying close attention to the feel of your rod and bait to know exactly when you're hung and when you're out.
For both of these techniques what you choose for a rod becomes critical. Crankbaits are commonly fished on long glass rods to aid in casting and to keep from tearing hooks from fish but when it comes to grass, some stiffness is crucial but a blend is best. A shorter more limber rod such as a 6'8" medium action casting rod gives you the sensitivity to quickly detect when your bait is hung but the stiffness of graphite helps when ripping through the grass becomes necessary.

As usual, great video. The admission that you're not a crankbait guru was classy and rare. You have the potential to be a top tier channel on your own, IMO.

I really like your channel. Like your manner, your delivery, the vibe to your fishing. It's not overwhelming flash and noise, just solid steady insights and confidence. Keep at it with my thanks

This guy is awesome! And that fish that jumped out of the water in the background looked like a big Northern! That was so cool!!! Great video man! You are one of my favorites for sure!

Thanks, Papa Duck! There were many schools of small bluegill on the surface around those grass patches and all the predators were busting them up! Lucky I got that one on camera.. Appreciate the comment!

I fish in this same geographic area. There aren’t a lot of crank bait gurus around here (not counting trolling for ‘eyes) like down south. Watching guys like Jacob Wheeler dominate on cranks has had me thinking about how to adapt those techniques to the northern grass lakes. This gives me more confidence to keep trying!

Give it a try, Scott! Learning new tactics keeps fishing fresh. You never know if it could be the next big thing or something the fish haven't seen much in your area. Hello from 47 degress north latitude-

Havent gotten to play with deep weed enough to really enjoy this technique. Most of my lakes around here are thick/topped out weed - or rock shoal - Excited to play with this next time it fits the bill. Great video as always, Mckeon. Might sell my tinner for a Yak next season - a man only needs so many boats.

Thanks a lot, Tyler. Try a crank off the edge of that grass. You can make a long parallel cast and cover a lot of water- Best of luck

Good tip for grabbing fish with trebles in their face.
Grabbed the bill of the crankbait or jerkbait and hold it super tight. It helps keep the hooks away from your hands

Another mind 🤯 blowing video This is, like straight up totally. Of course I enjoy all these great tips.
Me on the other hand, I enjoy using the vmc pro series crayfish jigs, straight King crappie 2 inch lighting shad, Berkley powerbait 2 inch ripple shad and crappie magnets---these big crappie magnets ain't just for crappies, they also catch big bass and perch and other species as well.

Medium power not so much, unless maybe for light cranks like a 1.5sq bill or maybe DT6. But I use med heavy or heavy for deep crankbaits that go 16-25’. Moderate action on all my crank bait rods is the key.

  • @DavidMccallister65
    @DavidMccallister65 3 роки тому

I never fish with a medium action rod, especially around grass because you don't have enough backbone to clear the hooks with the bog down in cover like grass, leaves sticks ect.
This especially applies when ripping a lipless around

It is among the nicest rods I’ve ever felt and fished with.. Border line obsessed. I would have to say worth it. Would also suggest checking out the Catalyzer series from Ark. high modulus blank for 60 bucks!

Thought I’d take a stab at a technique I’m less familiar with and let people come along for the ride and learn too. Was hoping to encourage people to try new things even if it isn’t in their wheelhouse. If you watch the whole video you’d realize there was in fact crankbaits fished in grass patches and you will learn 2 methods for to keep them from getting hung. True to the title. Just ask all the bass in this video. -W2F Staff Member
