The movie that most freaked me out was Dante's Peak. Specifically the acid lake scene with the grandma pushing the boat gave me nightmares from age 13-15.
I find it more than a little amusing that these could often be in the same room as RedLetterMedia discussions, just without adult language and alcohol.
I have no idea why this was the case, but here is my crazy trick or treat experience: In 2018 we lived in a little neighborhood in Southern California, we had just moved in and we asked our neighbor how many trick or treaters they usually got (so we new how much candy to buy) "Oh, we usually get at least 500. Last year we got almost a thousand" 😳 We really stocked up, but we handed out about 800 pieces of candy and ran out before 8:00 while things were still going STRONG. Mercifully, we have since moved. I don't know if we could afford Halloween like that every year 😂
I was going through DEN years ago and saw a copy of Mistborn on a rack in the bookstore. It was out of place a bit and looked like it had been handled a little and I thought to myself, "Nah, could it be?" So I flipped it open and, sure enough, it was signed on the title page. SOLD! 😃 I spent the next 4 hours re-reading that on my flight back to TN.
It's funny listening to Dan talk about not getting trick-or-treaters because he lives on a hill at 17:00 because that's exactly how my in-laws house used to be. They would have people who would shout up from the bottom and ask if they could just throw the candy down lol
You have inspired me through your books. They have taught me so many life lessons through your characters. Your personality and the way you live your life shines through your characters. I admire and appreciate you so much.
Dan didn't come to the showing in my theater, so I've been poking him to see it. But I did do a review (which got copyright claimed, so we're having to go through that process.)
Halloween provides me with the excuse to wear my NCR Ranger costume outside of conventions. Therefore it is an awesome holiday for that alone. Although this year I'll probably just dress up, hand out candy, and finally decide if I'm doing that November National Writing Month thing this year. Oh, and occasionally hand out carrots. Because teasing kids is fun.
Used to love halloween when the older children were little. We'd go out and have such a fun time. The youngest though...he has always disliked halloween, even when he was little. He wasn't scared....he just didn't want to dress up and "You want me to WHAT? Go up to STRANGERS HOUSES, knock on the door, and SPEAK TO THEM?" It was nightmare fuel for him. He put up with it til he was about 10 and then he declared he was DONE. He's 16 now. For the first time last year we darkened the house and didn't hand out candy. Total halloween grinches. It was BRILLIANT other than...y'know...the one kid who tried to open the door and come in. Thank goodness we locked it because what on earth were they thinking? My husband loves halloween and I'm all, "I'll buy you all the candy you want if you're the one to hand it out" but he a) works 10-11 hour days at his job and b) follows that up with 1-5 hours a night Bishoping so he doesn't have time. We'll likely hide in our darkened house this year too. Can't wait.
I love Big Trouble in Little China! But if I had to pick a horror-film to watch I think I would put on "In the Mouth of Madness". I just love that movie!
Big Trouble in Little China is an amazing movie. For me the scariest movie "experience" I had was Night of the Comet, a friend and I saw it in the theater at like an 1100PM showing, and were walking home in a storm and a transformer exploded, and there was no one out.
I’m just gonna comment that I am listening to all of these episodes in order after my brother introduced me to them a few weeks ago. Loving every episode and hope to catch up to current by end of summer. P.s. introduced my wife to mistborn on the return trip from our honeymoon 😄
When I was a teen, Poltergeist scared the crap out of me, especially the scene with the chicken. And two scary scenes I remember: when I was a kid, we saw Sleeping Beauty in the theater, and when the witch turned into the dragon, I hid between the seats. And in the remake of Dune, when Paul gathered the Fremen and they all started fanatically chanting "Muad'dib!" I swear a little poo came out. Frightening stuff!
So I’m slowly catching up with your podcast and I just have to comment: Try Hereditary. I am a man in my 30s who has not been scared by a horror movie in well over a decade, then I watched Hereditary and just lost it. It completely broke me. And it’s made by one of the greatest up and coming horror directors out there so it’s beautifully high quality production
My fav monster movie of all time is “The Relic”. Good pacing, mental fun, and the monster design is epic. I thoroughly enjoyed “The House on Haunted Hill” 1999. It’s the kind of overblown exaggerated sfx fest that makes for great popcorn viewing.
Re SCP: I'm always delighted to hear it mentioned. I wish there was another SCP as easy to dress up as 049, but there is a reason why it is a really nice character study. I would love to hear Dan's thoughts on some of them. Maybe just a few of the classic, like 049, 106, 173. One of my favorite horror ones is 079. None of the early scps are great writing by any means, but they are fun and delightful. SCP is the best evidence that "ideas are cheap" but man, there's a lot of cool and weird ideas in there.
The last horror movie I watched that I thought was scary was Hereditary, really well done! The one that has scared me the most was Rec (the original Spanish version) but it was only one scene... I watched it during the day and I gave the loudest scream ever.
What did Hereditary scare you? A lot of my friends pushed me to see it, and after seeing it I was kinda let down by hype. The move is too slow in the begging and middle, pacing kinda breaks the tension for me.
One family when I was still young would put a dummy out by the mailbox on the street (they don't have those anymore except in the older neighborhoods) at least a week before Halloween. On the day of the event, that dummy would be replaced by a real person dressed identically to the dummy so that no one was aware of the scare-ready "decoration." It worked every year even when we knew about it. XD
No lets get back to how we need The Rithmatist to keep going!!!!! I have no doubt that my comment on an old video will sway Brandon. Hahaha. One of my fav. YA books as well!!!!!!!!
Dans comments about the bouncing ball scene being freaky because the main protagonist was finally scared is why I Am Legend (movie) is such a masterpiece to me. Will Smith, who is (in the movie and often in movies) a no-nonsense, scared of nothing military straight edge has a meltdown when the mannequin has been moved. It’s like his world is falling apart and I Felt that. It’s my favorite scene in the whole movie (i think?)
Ever since I was a kid I always wanted to be the dead guy. I remember I got mad at my mum because she wouldn't let me sleep in a coffin. This was when I was like 8.
Scariest movie I have seen was Occulus. Watched it in my 30's (it's not that old) and I didn't turn off my lights for a week. The story telling through the filmography was great, and helped with the horror of it. It's not something I hear people talk about, and I hadn't heard of it until my friend brought it over. Maybe Dan or Brandon would enjoy it? I found it deeply unsettling at least.
I love Halloween and I love haunted houses, but i hate scary movies. I took my 1 year old to his first Halloween and he loved it. He lasted at least an hour trick or treating. He loved Freddy Krueger who scared a lot of moms with kids. So we'll see what happens when he's two next year.
The most terrifying film I have ever seen: The original Les Diaboliques. I can't recommend it highly enough. Scared the living daylights out of me. One poor girl in front of us screamed her lungs out at one point. =D. Though I must say it's more suspense than anything. No gore.
I concur, Cabin in the Wood is a must-see. Also, for SCP and gaming enthusiasts, I'd recommend the video game Control. Brandon should check this game out, if he doesn't know of its existence.
Anyone ever seen Dreamscape? The nightmare scenes were pretty good horror although it probably wouldn’t be classified as a horror movie. The cellar scene hit me particularly hard because it was like a nightmare version of the basement in my house growing up lol
I trick or treated every year through having kids up until a few years ago. We moved to the country and no one does trick or treating out here. But we dress up for the ward trunk or treat.
Podcast name suggestion, Narrative Tangents. (The tangent conversation that strikes a chord) or Tangent Narratives (yes! we do have a plan!!!!!) Coarse even more Pratchettety, Panning for a Narrative (we’re not just monkeying around)
Only 2 movies have ever given me nightmares. 1 being Ghostbusters. I was 6. I didn’t know it was a comedy. The other was The Sound Of Music. I was 12. The Nazis terrified me.

The movie is totally different than the book, however I love BOTH the book AND the movie each independently of each other as they are. Great movie. Great book.
Hey horror folks, what classics would I need to watch first to be properly impacted by Scream? I have never really been a horror film viewer but I'm interested in giving it a try. Based on Sanderson's description, Scream inverts tropes or breaks the formula but I doubt I have enough horror knowledge to understand that.
I wonder did Dan see # Alive and Penninsula (this one considered a sequel to TTB i think) and what he thinks about those as a Train To Bussan fan. Speaking of Korea and Zombies - Kingdom series is what freshened zombies for me. Definitely can recommend.
I don't love scary movies, though will watch all things zombie! Lol I do need to watch Train to Busan, I have heard it is good. Other things like Saw, no thank you.
Muggle parents can spontaneously have wizard children and vice versa. I never saw it as a genetic lottery. I figured it was more of a spiritual thing. Like, special magical people, regardless of status or heritage, born in direct opposition to the genetic purists who think only established wizard houses should be allowed to exist and use magic? It's a pretty interesting lesson to be teaching children.
Eh it acts more like a latent gene that requires an activator. With the latent gene and the activator gene both having dominant and recessive variants. Would explain the prejudice/prestige with the old blood families that can trace back their lineage to the original wizards, and there nearly Hapsburg tendency for cousin marriage.
@@Adam_okaay So epigenetics? I'm currently rereading the books and I'm glad she doesn't spend too much time getting into how that whole aspect works. Sometimes muggles have magic kids and sometimes wizards have squibs. I like the idea that a wizard can come from any family, regardless or heritage or class.
I saw the opening sequence of Scream at five years old. I had nightmares about for years and years, to this day that experience had ruined anything horror for me. Halloween is my least favorite day of the year
35:48 - My brain: "You are now deaf out of nowhere and this is what the rest of your life will be like!"
The audio cuts out just before the 36 minutes mark, for just a minute or so.
A few times near the end, too.
It almost seems intentional, like it was edited. Did he spoil something?
FYI - The audio does not cut out on the Spotify version so you can still hear the end of it there =)
@@palmkdbooks They actually just cutted out the muted part on Spotify.
I wonder why Brandon would be scared by a story of a crazy fan holding a distinguished writer captive and torturing him...
Send Dalin over to Dan's place for Halloween spooky-time; send Dan's kids with Brandon for group Trick or Treating. It's the perfect solution!
The movie that most freaked me out was Dante's Peak. Specifically the acid lake scene with the grandma pushing the boat gave me nightmares from age 13-15.
rithmatist is the book I most want a video game of. Specifically a VR game. It doesnt even need a story, just a match making mode and a swarm mode
I'm just going to assume that audio cut was because Brandon and Dan suddenly decided to swear up a storm for a moment. 🙃😂🤣
Brandon is not scared by The Shining because he cannot imagine a writer who is not able to write.
I find it more than a little amusing that these could often be in the same room as RedLetterMedia discussions, just without adult language and alcohol.
It's an honor to be compared to such glorious hack frauds. :)
I have no idea why this was the case, but here is my crazy trick or treat experience:

We really stocked up, but we handed out about 800 pieces of candy and ran out before 8:00 while things were still going STRONG.
Mercifully, we have since moved. I don't know if we could afford Halloween like that every year 😂
Wow, we get about 200 and that feels like enough. We usually have one person in costume scaring the kids outside which is fun.
I was going through DEN years ago and saw a copy of Mistborn on a rack in the bookstore. It was out of place a bit and looked like it had been handled a little and I thought to myself, "Nah, could it be?" So I flipped it open and, sure enough, it was signed on the title page. 😁 Big Trouble in Little China is one of my favorite movies.
Brandons kid sounds like a character, he will be a cool guy when he gets older.
Describing Jeff Goldblum as "from Thor: Ragnarok" broke my brain 😂
I hope we get a DUNE podcast
Dan didn't come to the showing in my theater, so I've been poking him to see it. But I did do a review (which got copyright claimed, so we're having to go through that process.)

Same here. I wore my NCR armour a few years in High School. Went as Joker my last year.
You've GOTTA show respect for Sanderson's son commitment in costume detail and verisimilitude...

Big Trouble in Little China is one of my top 5 movies of all time
Best blood recipe: Corn syrup, red food dye, cocoa powder(vital for realism). Use as is for makeup. Add water to make runnier. Tasty and non-toxic.
Big Trouble in Little China is an amazing movie.

Dallin understands Halloween better than anyone I've ever met. The zombie tradition sounds amazing.
I'm want to know what Brandon said, that they had to censor him for 30 seconds at timestamp 35:48. 😁
Foundation redacted it
The Changeling!! Yes, great movie. My favorite too.

The Changeling is great. Love the ball scene, if I remember correctly the ball was wet after being thrown off the bridge.

The Rithmatist is indeed my favorite of all of Brandon’s books, excluding the Emperor’s Soul novella.
