  • Join me for a walk around the heart of one of Yorkshire's most wonderful towns, Skipton - otherwise known as the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. Situated on the edge of the grand expanse of wilderness, this historic market town has grown around a beautifully-preserved castle and a network of canals into a delightful town and tourist destination!
On our walk around Skipton, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Skipton High Street, Skipton Town Hall, Skipton Castle, Holy Trinity Church, Skipton War Memorial, The Black Horse Pub, statue of Mathew Wilson, Skipton Library, Sheep Street, Victoria Square, Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Springs Branch Canal, Eller Beck, Mill Bridge, High Corn Mill and the Castle Inn.

Good evening! And welcome to this walk around one of Yorkshire's most wonderful towns: Skipton! Known as the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, Skipton is full of history at every turn, complete with a grand medieval castle, calming canals and grand architecture.
There's a lot of history to Skipton, but one thing we didn't mention on our walk is that the town was home to two prisoner of war camps in the First and Second World Wars. In WWI, a former military camp of the Bradford Pals was converted into a large detention centre for German officers and soldiers - over 600 of them, while in WWII, a modern-day caravan park held German and Italian soldiers just outside Skipton town centre.

Its also one of the safest places to be. Thank goodness it hasn't gone the way of the surrounding cities. I live here now and you never feel threatened and thats incredible given crime stats elsewhere.

Make sure to never let it become another victim of multiculturalism and "diversity". Protect it with all your might.

What a nice, well-kept town. Something occured to me as we reached the first canal: it seems strange that, while the canal builders made an effort to take the canals through the centre of towns, the railways didn't seem to worry so much about convenience, often siting the station on the outskirts of, or even outside, the towns they served.
Obviously, there are exceptions to such a wide generalisation and some feasible reasons come to mind, you would think it would be slightly easier to route a railway than a water-filled, flat canal, even allowing for locks.
    Ho-hum, just a thought.😁
