Do All Christians Speak in Tongues? | Episode 3

  • In 1 Corinthians 12:30, the apostle Paul asked, "Do all speak with tongues?" Was Paul implying that not all believers will speak with tongues when they receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit? If so, Paul's words would contradict the teaching of modern-day Pentecostals.
Dr. David K. Bernard answers Paul's question by explaining the difference between tongues as the initial evidence of Spirit baptism and the gift of tongues listed as one of the nine spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10.

I agree with Paul that not everyone speaks in tounges these are the ones who do
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
    Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Mark 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Only believers speak in tongues these signs follow us

In 1 Cor. 12:30 the context is Paul is speaking about the order of a Church service. And of course in a service setting not all will speak in tongues. But all will in prayer and worship.

Exactly! Proper teaching. We that know the true word of God need to stand as you did and put the word in proper context. I've heard so many pastors teach that this means all baptized believers do not speak in tongues. And that is false teaching, as you stated this is a different conversation Paul is having about a believer that is filled with his spirit, and does speak in tongues. I teach that is not the same as "the gift of tongues" as you you were speaking about in 1 Corinthians 12. Thank you and continue to rightly devide this word and stand and bring correction to it when it's improperly taught, I get almost spiritually angry and stand to defend the gospel as I see you do as well. God bless!

Perfectly taught, this is exactly how I have always understood it this way from the scripture's in new testament. I have also spoken with many believers that use this to say all do not speak with tongues in baptism. I bring up the scripture in Acts where Paul asked the new believers " Have you received the holy ghost since ye believed", they said, "we have not so much as heard there be of a holy ghost ", meaning they were not baptized fully And receive the filling of the spirit of God, Paul says ' "then into what are you baptized ?" Meaning, how have you been filled with the spirit of God if you have not had an infilling experience or if you don't speak in tongues. Then it says Paul prayed for them to receive the holy ghost and the were baptized that moment and spoke in tongues, meaning they had a true infilling experience.

    • @skyeprophet3564

Oh dear. Paul recognised they were believers but did not yet receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit which without being too theological he terms "received the Holy Spirit" however it is clear from scripture that people are "Born Again" and recieve the Holy spirit when they believe. What Paul was referring to was the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, not at all meaning that they weren't saved already but that subsequent to their salvation they should recieve the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. It is your own interpretation about the "true infilling experience" and has nothing to do with scripture. Infilling is but one of the things that happens in the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, others include empowerment for service, spiritual gifting, the gift of tongues as a personal prayer language, empowerment towards righteousness, boldness in the Holy Spirit and a responsive heart.

@@grannywoods12 I was never raised in a church. When I was 22 yrs old a friend invited me to an Apostolic Pentecostal Bible study. Before the study I saw people going through a doorway into another room. My friend saw me watching them and asked me if I knew where they were going and I said no.
He said that they were going back there to pray and if I wanted I could too. So I did. I found a low sitting bench off in a corner, knelt and closed my eyes. I didn't even know how to pray so I was listening to others pray.
After a few minutes I heard a girl come back there and she was praising God as she came in English. Suddenly she switched and was speaking this stuttery language I had never heard before. Keeping an open mind I remember thinking, " That's interesting". As soon as I had thought this I felt this powerful presence draw near me. I could feel the power of this presence shining on me but I wasn't afraid because I felt love too. I was so naive that I opened one eye to see if perhaps someone had quietly knelt right beside me. Nio one was anywhere near me. So I thought, " It must be God".
I went back out and sat with my friend and watched the people as they came out of the prayer room. I was amazed . They were smiling and their was a glow not only around their faces but around their heads. I remember thinking that what I had felt near me in the prayer room they must have in them.

It is unfortunate that every believer doesn't speak in tongues, which is what the Lord desires. Paul said "Now I want you all to speak in tongues" but that is conveniently overlooked by people who want to make 1 Cor 12:30 into an excuse to not seek God for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit or to say that the are somehow "above" speaking in tongues through arrogance, stupidity or worse. The fact is tongues, which is one of the evidences of the reception of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is for every believer. Would you say, No, I won't get baptised in water because it is not necessary for salvation? As with water baptism, baptism in the Holy Spirit is undertaken in obedience to God. In 1 Cor 12:30 the context makes it abundantly clear he is talking about use of the gifts in the Church context. "God has placed in the church.." then he lists a range of ministries that might be expressed in the church. Evidently he is teaching about proclamatory tongues exercised in the church service. This is the context he goes on to teach on in 1 Corinthians 14. He there differentiates between tongues as a message given in church either to God or the Church and tongues as a personal prayer language between the believer and God. I 1 Cor 12 he is referencing proclamatory tongues, not tongues in general and saying that not everyone does that. Otherwise he would be saying that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is not for everyone, which would be totally contradictory. It is not true that you have to speak in tongues to be saved. You are saved when you receive Jesus into your life and born again from above. This can be proved in scripture from the chronological experience of the believers. They were believers in Christ and saved before the day of Pentecost recorded in Acts 2. They were born from above, they were following Jesus as his disciples. Then Jesus told them to "wait for the promise of the father, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit of which John Spoke" that is the whole point of the book of Acts. That on that day they recieved the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. A baptism for commissioning for service, for empowerment in the Holy Spirit including induction into his gifts evidenced by speaking in tongues. For empowerment towards a responsive heart towards the Lord, edification and righteousness. That is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. The chronology proves the theology. You can be a born again believer and not speak in tongues. Tongues is not a requirement for salvation.

If you recieved the infilling of the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in tongues it is likely you will continue atleast occasionally to speak in to infuse. Paul said we don’t always know what we should pray for but the spirit speaks for us with groaning as that cannot be utter or the spirit takes control of our tongue as we pray. There is no written requirement for tongues after initially recieveing but I would take it as a sign to seek God more and draw closer to him if it does not happen.

    • @aaronfromtheave
      @aaronfromtheave 3 місяці тому

the language is unknown to the person speaking. so for instance , if me and you only speak english and the Holy Ghost unctions me to to pray in tongues - neither of us will know what i’m saying. why ? because we both speak the same native tongue, and the tongue the holy ghost will cause me to speak is unknown to the speaker. the only way you or i would know what was said is if God gave us and interpretation( through me or you ) afterwards. and an interpretation will only come if the purpose of the tongue was to be interpreted for the edifying of the body. i hope that makes sense. there’s a difference between praying quietly amongst yourself ,between you and God, and praying for the church. when the bible mentions an interpretor, that’s for a tongue spoken over the body. usually the Lord will cause two or three to speak ( while everyone else is silent) then an interpretation will follow. just like in 1corinthians14

Why did Paul say in church he would rather speak five words that could be understood then 10,000 no one can? He said he would like everyone to speak in tongues to take the word to unbelievers. but not everyone’s gonna be an evangelist.
When the spirit of truth comes, it will not speak on its own authority. It’s only gonna remind you of what Christ said!
So how can someone get up in the church and say something that is not already written?
If unknown tongues is evidence of salvation. Why isn’t it in the gospels?
Unknown tongues is not a mystery to God. It’s only a mystery to people who don’t know what’s being said! there is an a language that God understands better! Paul said if someone speaks and not understood your speaking to the air/birds!

John 16:13 … when the Spirt of truth comes, he will guide you to all truth. It will not act on its own authority!
So how can someone get up in church in an unknown language & say something that’s not written in the Bible because even if it gets interpret, the Spirt cannot reveal anything that is not written! It can only remind you of things Christ said! Paul’s meaning, wishing everyone spoke tongues was to spread the word around the world, but not all can be preachers/prophesy! What does Bernard mean when he says, pray to yourself in tongues? When all gifts are to build up the church and not edify yourself patting yourself on the back, I’m more spiritual than others! Matt6:7 when you pray by yourself, do not babble and repeat, like pagans!
2Corin12:20-21 Paul addresses Corinthians, who could speak in tongues to promote Gods purpose, and 🎉yet were considered sinners….
Tongues are for unbelievers, prophecy/spreading the word, is for believers! 2Corin14:22
Sorry, but you can’t take descriptive to be prescriptive. That’s why Paul wrote 3 chapters on tongues, in Corinthians and put order! And if anyone says there’s a second heavenly language, other than earthly language, where is that verse?

That's because they are feeling the Holyghost on the outside. Once the Holyghost enters your soul it starts speaking through u. Like the Bible states with Stammering lips and another tounge I speak to this people. With that being said anyone who receives the gift of the Holyghost will begin to speak in other tounges as the spirit gives the utterance. Everything we do on earth is a representation of what takes place in Heaven. When 1 is born of this world upon their arrival everyone knows that baby has arrived by its voice crying. Same thing happens when 1 is born of the spirit. Their spirit will enter into heaven as a baby with a voice speaking in other tounges as the spirit gives the utterance. I hope this was helpful.

I was convicted against this message when I first became a Christian and then years later I went and studied this subject and God confirmed to me that not everyone is given the gift of tongues and it is not proof that somebody does not have the holy spirit. I believe that God has given me the gift of discernment in many things and this is one of them. Unfortunately too many pastors and preachers have misunderstood God and are pushing these 'gifts' on everyone....... this is not from God and he does not approve of false teaching on such important topics like this. I know many spirit filled Christians who do not speak in tongues. Further study and context needs to be given in this area to find the truth.....

Less from man - more from God. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you : but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
Not any man, but an anointed man of God. I have encountered many who take this position without understanding, and not asking God first. Since God inspired every word written in the scriptures, why not ask Him first? In 1995 i came upon a Jehovah's witness. She believed the same way as you. But I ask her, "have you ask God first for his Spirit?" She honestly said no! Then I said - just ask him by faith and nothing doubting -you'd be surprised what happens next. Also in 2016 I witnessed to a Kenyan women, she too believed as you. I ask the same question as i did with the Jehovah's witness. She said no! She said how I can know without someone guide me?! Doesn't that sound familiar to the Ethiopian Eunuch found in Acts 8:26-39? She repented the same day and about a week later The LORD filled her with the holy ghost w/ the evidence of tongues as the Spirit gave her the utterance. Note: I witnessed to her over the phone from the U.S and she was in Kenya!!!! With God - location is not impossible. All God needs is a willing heart of faith. Do you want His Spirit today? Just ask him, and not Doubt. Praying for you @purps. Smile!
Closing thoughts: If it is written, do what it says accordingly by (Dia) faith. In Roman 10 - Paul states the following about (Israel and the Gentiles) - How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
And how shall they preach, (except) they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that (sought me not); I was made manifest unto them that (asked not after me).
The signal is the Word of God. The noise are those without understanding. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Ask God - he will NEVER fail you! Amen.

This passage in John is part of Jesus' parting words to his disciples. He also told them, as Luke records in Acts 1:4 to wait for the promise of the Father. If they already had the Holy Ghost, there was no need for them to wait for it on the Day of Pentecost. Another thing to consider, no where in the John 20 passage, or anywhere else, does it say they received the Holy Ghost until the Day of Pentecost. John 20:22 coupled with John 7:39 and Acts 1:8, and Acts 2:4 prove that the disciples were not filled with the Holy Ghost until the Day of Pentecost. So, John 20:22 is a prophetic utterance of Jesus to go to Jerusalem and "Receive ye the Joly Ghost." Hope this helps.

My thoughts from the balance of scripture is that woman can def speak in church and be significant in ministry as well as holding a ministry gift in the five fold offices, and I believe they can pastor as long as they are under a Male covering, ie husband, or the Bishop that appointed or installed her as a true pastor. I think it comes down to true apostolic covering, but these days people are getting a Bible degree online for taking a couple of classes and starting churches and no one has sent them. I think thats really where the problem lies if a woman starts a church has no apostolic covering that has qualified you to do so, and or has no husband that is the head of her household (pastor or not/ though I believe if she's equally yoked, the husband would be called to ministry as well), then it should be no problem for her to pastor a church, I feel as long as there is a qualified Apostle/Bishop to install her, I see nothing in scripture saying wrong with it. Though I also believe in that state as any male pastor, (to avoid fornication, let her take a husband, or man take a wife, because God has his perfect gift for everyone in this matter so as long as she is covered I believe based on the many scriptures on the subject, she can pastor.

I would submit that the first act of someone receiving the infilling of the Holy ghost is not Acts 2, rather, its the baptism of the Holy Spirit at the Jordan river of Jesus Christ. For some reason, the Spirit coming upon Jesus The Christ is greatly overlooked and without any justification for it. The scripture doesn't display tongues as the Holy Spirit had come upon Him even while He was being a man of like passions as we are, yet we teach the inherited interpretation that this singular external signal is the only way of recieving the Holy Ghost or identifying someone who has the Holy Ghost to everyone else.
I received the gift of the Holy Ghost at home while praising God in my bedroom. I noticed it because the Spirit quickened me, or in other words, during my praising God I began to "shout" for the first time in my life. I did not speak in tongues. I was invited to church, and a few weeks later, I was in a prayer room "tarrying" for the Holy Ghost when I spoke in tongues for the first time in my life. I was speaking in tongues like 10 minutes in. What is my point? I initially didn’t accept that I was Spirit filled because someone else didn’t tell me that I was. Growing up Apostolic Pentecostal, I was prewired to believe that it only happens with tongues, so I dismissed my own initial experience because of the teaching that I trusted as unadulterated truth. When I spoke in tongues, it was a sign of what was already present and what matched my faith/belief system. That was when I consciously accepted my salvation, but the consciousness and the timing of the Holy Spirits arrival were misaligned solely because of my skewed belief system.
We have to remember that signs are an outward expression that follows the inward presence. The Holy Spirit is not an inward sign of an outward expression.
    God bless.

Acts 2:38 does not say you need evidence in tongues gor receiving HolyGhost. Upon baptism in Jesus name you receive HolyGhost.

The Holy Ghost is salvifically essential
Mark 16:16-17: He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned. (17) And these signs shall follow them that believe, in my name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues.
Romans 8:9-10: But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you, now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (10) And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Acts 2:4: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Truthfully, he is wrong that everyone in the congregation can speak in tongues while praying out loud, especially the fact that 1st Corinthians 14 never mentions that all believers can speak in tongues while praying out loud, but it does say in 1st Corinthians 14 that if anybody who speaks in tongues out loud while praying or to edify others in the congregation, they need to be silent unless there must be someone to interpret it as well as only 2-3 people can speak in tongues during any form of a church meeting, which means that every single person in the congregation can’t speak in tongues while they are praying unless there are half of the people there to interpret the others who are speaking in tongues while praying.
Not only that, it is extremely clear from reading 1st Corinthians 14 that the Apostle Paul literally says that the person who prophesies is greater than the person who speaks in tongues (or languages) unless that person who is speaking in tongues (or languages) can interpret to the whole church so that the whole church may be built up, which means that the Apostle Paul believed and taught that speaking in tongues (or languages) has no usefulness whatsoever in the church.
    God Bless!!!!

Very disturbing. This gentlemen takes three instances from the Book of Acts, and declares therefore that ALL Christians speak in tongues. But he doesn't deal the accounts where people were saved without any mention of speaking in tongues: the 3,000 on the Day of Pentecost, the Apostle Paul, the Ethiopian eunuch, the Philippian jailer, and others. And he does not point out the Scripture that unequivocally states that we must speak in tongues- because it does not exist.
And 1 Corinthians 12 is not dealing with public, corporate worship. It is dealing with the diversity and importance of the different members of the body, and that the Holy Spirit distributes the gifts as He sees fit, to whom He will. Paul asks a series of rhetorical questions in 1 Corinthians 12:29-30; the sentence structure in the original Greek REQUIRES that the answer to these questions be NO!
According to 1 Corinthians 14 speaking in tongues in a public worship service without an interpreter is forbidden. And what are 'tongues?' The Greek word 'glossa' which is interpreted as 'tongues' simply means languages. In Acts 2 they were speaking in known, intelligible, human languages, not unintelligible babbling.

Erroneous doctrine here. Dr. Bernard is assuming the 3000 also spoke in tongues in Acts 2. The text does not say that. If Luke mentioned the 120, don’t you think the 3000 speaking in tongues would have been a marvelous sight to see and surely not a detail to leave out?

Growing up in the UPCI, the passage of 1 Corinthians 14: 1-25 was never covered. This section of scripture clearly shows Paul instructing the church to refrain from speaking in tongues while in service unless for prophecy (around new/unbelievers attending), because it only edifies themselves and no one else, also how speaking in tongues will make people new to the faith think the place is insane. I had to grow up with that error in teaching and had so many guests traumatized by the lack of order in the service with dozens of people screaming in tongues. The UPCI should really put emphasis on this to spare more damage in the church with guests, who are ultimately very important.

Speaking in tongues is indeed a biblical gift of the Spirit, but it can be impersonated and should not be the sole evidence of being baptized by the Holy Spirit or having the seal of God. Instead, the true evidence lies in the Fruit of the Spirit, as a tree can be identified by its fruit, and "By their fruit you shall know them." Therefore, those who believe in the Trinity can still experience speaking in tongues, but the genuine test of their spiritual experience lies in the manifestation of the Fruit of the Spirit.
In Joel 2:28-29, it is stated that God will pour out His Spirit upon ALL flesh. Just like rain falls on both the wicked and the just, and both tares and wheat grow, the core or seed of each remains unchanged.
A Son of God will show consistent fruit as it grows, just as the son of the Devil will display characteristics consistent with their nature.

1Cor. 13:1. Speaking in tongue 👅?. Speaking in tongue = evidence of receiving the Holy spirit ?. 👎. You received the Holy Spirit first before you ever speak in tongue, if you ever received such gift . Please do not put the cart before the horse 👎.Be careful ! Medium , heathen also spoke in tongue ?. Act chapter two is not Speaking in tongue, but the unbelievers hearing in the their own language, the interpretation of The Spirit, the tongues of Galileans ( Peter and all the disciples of Jesus. ). It was the The Holy Spirit ( Pillar of fire 🔥) in divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them ( Act. 2:3). Not Speaking in tongue !. Speaking in tongues are for a sign to the unbelievers !. 1Cor. 14: 9,19,11, 22,23 !.

Not that I have a problem with tongues, but if your going to use the passage where Jesus said those who believe would soeak with new tongues, as evidence of the baptism... Why jump over the other signs? Anyone cast of a devil the moment they received the baptism? What about drink some poison? Perhaps even picked up a snake? I think the fact that the only only SIGN that COULD be faked if someone had a reason to is THE sign everyone decides to use aka tongues.is a telling sign.. Cant fake drinking Clorox and not being hurt

The Baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues is real. But you must have repented of your sins to be born again before you can receive it. The Lord also will not force the Holy Ghost/himself into anyone. If you dont believe it's real or for you, then you won't receive it. But i repeat, a truly repentant heart is necessary, or it won't happen. Jesus is the gift giver, and only he can truly know someone's heart. He said there are those who honor him with their words, but their hearts are far from him. Repentance with a Godly sorrow worketh unto salvation. This is different than just being sorry you got caught in your sins. The Bible calls it worldly sorrow. You know you sinned, but you dont really want to change. When you get serious with the Lord about hating sin and wanting nothing to do with it, that is when you know you're saved. A lost person doesn't care about their sins or that they are grieving the Holy Spirit. So, truly repent if you haven't and ask the Lord for the gift of the Holy Ghost. 0:03

🤔 & IS EVERY TONGUE INTERPRETED AS WRITTEN IN...
    ( 1 Corinthians 14:14-19 )
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
TONGUES IS A GIFT, NOT A SALVATION QUALIFICATION. IF THIS BE TRUE, THOSE BEFORE THE UPPER ROOM COULD NOT BE SAVED & SALVATION ONLY, ONLY COMES THROUGH THE CHRIST JESUS. HE WAS CRUCIFIED EVEN FOR THOSE BEFORE HIM SO THEY COULD ENTER HEAVEN.

I was praying late at night in our back yard when I started praying in Tongues. A few days later a neighbor woman who was Hebrew asked my mother where I learned Hebrew.. Nothing I said sounded like Hebrew to me. That night I spoke in three languages, I was proud to do so, then I saw a river of trillions of languages and I realized my three didn't count for much.

youre making an assumption when u say "every single person who got the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues in Acts"
there were instances when tongues aren't mentioned, and instances were tongues AND prophecy are mentioned
why is it that it's only tongues that are emphasized?
the gift of tongues is the same in public and in private, you use it in private when there is no one to interpret
